Valkyria Chronicles™

This game has interesting tactical possibilities due to various classes, unit perks and evolution through experience and gear. Unfortunately on chapter 7 you face a semi-scripted fight where an invulnerable and high damaging enemy appears. It throws tactics out of the window because you have to either be lucky with how you approach the battle or know beforehand what to do, which turns the mission into boring repetition with artificial difficulty. Pure disrespect towards the player.

I last played this game back in 2015 and decided to pick it up again recently (2025). Valkyria Chronicles is one of those games that you either absolutely love or absolutely hate. It's a JRPG with a focus on turn based strategy. Which to its credit, does pretty well. However, there are certainly aspects of this game that are broken, bugged or simply frustrating. The PC port has it's fair share of bugs some even game breaking making you halt your progress because your refreshrate is too high to walk a certain walkway, so you have to take measures to cheese your way through it. Or when you're upgraded and leveled out to the max and yet you still get your ass kicked by a unbeatable boss because thats just the way the story goes. If you can look away from the unpolished business, Valkyria Chronicles is a story rich game with lots of characters, classess and game mechanics that will keep every battle interaction engaging and interesting. Overall a solid game and i would recommend you try it. 7/10

Valkyria Chronicles - удивительное сочетание тактической стратегии, шутера от третьего лица и трогательной истории, которое до сих пор остаётся актуальным, несмотря на выход в 2008 году (и переиздание в 2014). Игра не просто хорошо сохранилась, она и сегодня выглядит уникально благодаря своему визуальному стилю в духе живой акварели, который идеально сочетается с тоном повествования. Сюжет разворачивается в альтернативной Европе, охваченной войной. В центре событий отряд ополченцев из маленькой страны Галлии, оказавшейся между молотом и наковальней, между двух воюющих сверхдержав. И самое интересное, что ваши бойцы - это не элитная армия, а простые люди: фермеры, студенты, механики, которые берут в руки оружие, чтобы защитить свой дом. Игра очень деликатно показывает, как война проходит через судьбы обычных людей, раскрывая темы патриотизма, национализма, трагедии, потерь и мужества. После просмотра аниме многое становится ещё ближе: персонажи действительно живые, им сопереживаешь, переживаешь с ними и радость побед, и боль утрат. Особенно сильно работает контраст между уютной, почти сказочной эстетикой и жестокостью происходящего - погибающие товарищи, страх, недоверие, предательство и личные жертвы. Боевая система необычная и интересная: пошаговая стратегия с элементами управления от третьего лица, где важно не только планировать, но и точно действовать. И каждая ошибка может стоить жизни любимому персонажу, что делает выборы весомыми. Valkyria Chronicles - не просто военная игра, это честная и глубокая история, рассказывающая о цене свободы, хрупкости мира и силе человеческого духа. Даже спустя годы она не утратила актуальности, а наоборот, сегодня смотрится как неповторимый, душевный и содержательный подход к жанру.

Los Valkyria Chronicles son excelentes juegos, una mezcla de juego por turnos y tiempo real, donde te pueden disparar mientras te mueves, perder unidades a las que le tuvieras simpatia te deja dañado emocionalmente u.u y es todo un reto, me recuerda a los fire emblem clasicos en ese aspecto. Deseaaria que estuvieran los Valkyria Chronicles 2 y 3 o los spin off en steam.

[*] Ridiculously good japanese Voice actor casting, mainly Jun Fukuyama (he voiced Lelouch Lamperouge in code geass) for his incredible performance. [*] Runs on a potato. [*] Classes might feel unbalanced, Scouts for example (mainly Alicia) can solo a chapter if used correctly. Some of the orders are busted, like penetration and demolition boost completly remove the necessity of using lancers. [*] If you get stuck you might have the necessity to grind some levels and to level up your units. [/list] [h1]Veredict - 8/10[/h1] The game is one of a kind in its genre and its uniqueness carried it a little bit. There are some dumb mechanics that were improved on Valkyria Chronicles 4, still this one is the OG and overall a pretty decent game with unique and charismatic characters. Totally recommend it to fans of tatical RPG.

This game is pure soul. Good story (although the plot becomes a bit too exaggerated in the end, at least to my liking). Keep in mind the plot differs a little bit from the anime (anime's plot has the upperhand here, more sensible). Great sound and OST. Superb art. Cool menus. But a very flawed game when it comes to gameplay for the following reasons: - Order system is straight-up broken, there are 3 or 4 orders that are insanely better than others, which makes order stacking on a single unit not only a viable strategy, but the most straightforward (and the best) one. The biggest offenders are: Demolition boost, Penetration boost, Awaken Potential, and CAUTION (this order is... I don't know what to say). - Scouts are miles ahead every other class, they have the best accuracy (which makes accuracy weapon upgrades the only viable strategy), they can travel the most out of any other class (by a lot), they have the best range (not including snipers), a grenade launcher just in case they encounter their only counter (an enemy behind a trench) and the most broken skills (not gonna delve into that but... Alicia Melchiott's entire kit). Remember order stacking? Scouts are the targets. - Shocktroopers are ♥♥♥♥, period. They are considerably better in VC4 (which I have not finished) so there's that. Why are they ♥♥♥♥? Bad travel distance, bad range, not enough tankiness. - Engineers are useless, there is no reason to run an engineer ever. - Snipers are fun and satisfying to use! Both Catherine and Marina are cute as hell so make sure to run both every mission. - Then you have lancers, the anti-tank class. This class is atrocious, their travel distance is insanely bad, their resistance to crossfire and gatling guns is non-existent, their accuracy in middle range is non-reliable even with top weapons. They serve absolutely no purpose when you can use a scout or a shocktrooper, stack orders like penetration/demolition/damage boost + CAUTION (!!!), get behind a tank (you can use the utterly useless other tank which has smoke grenades to help you get behind the tank) and shoot the radiator for free. Many problems of VC1 are somewhat fixed in VC4, although I'm not too fond of the new movement mechanics nor the uncharismatic characters. Overall a great 2008 release from an era when Sega was still a videogame behemoth.
