About
Unsealed: The Mare is a challenging psychological horror game blending tense gameplay with a dark, emotional story.
You play as Vera, caught between dreams and memories, you search for what should have been forgotten. As fragments of your family’s tragedy surface, they poison your mind and intertwine with your memories, distorting the dream into something increasingly horrific. In this nightmare, everything feels connected - bound by guilt, sorrow, and something far darker you cannot yet comprehend.
What begins as a search for answers slowly becomes a fight against a nightmare shaped by memory, loss, and something unsettlingly personal.
---------
The story and lore are discovered through environmental clues, notes, and memories, inviting players to piece together the truth themselves rather than follow a traditional narrative.
The Horror Smiles At You
A first-person psychological horror game where you play as Vera, trapped in a nightmare tied to her family’s tragic past. Find and destroy cursed objects and restore lost memories to unlock sealed doors, reveal hidden areas, and survive challenging, terrifying encounters.
Disclaimer
I’ve had the game for months as a beta tester, since it’s my brother’s game. I review and rate every game I play, and my brother's game is no exception.
Story
Unsealed: The Mare focuses more on gameplay and horror than on telling a full story, although some lore is present. You play as Vera, a character with a tragic past that you gradually uncover. The story is mainly conveyed through environmental storytelling, by reading notes and observing the surroundings, rather than through cutscenes or voice narration.
Gameplay
Unsealed: The Mare is a first-person psychological survival horror game, developed by Gamhalla. The core gameplay loop is straightforward yet intense: scavenge the environment for items, survive while being pursued by a malevolent presence, solve puzzles, and burn teddy bears. Once all teddy bears and memory-bound objects have been destroyed in an area, you can move on. The gameplay is reminiscent of Slender, especially in chapter 3, where you burn teddies instead of collecting notes. Each teddy bear you burn increases the Mare’s rage and power, making the game progressively more challenging. Despite the tension, it delivers a more engaging and refined experience than Slender. You are equipped with a variety of tools essential for survival: a lighter, flashlight, camera, and spare light bulbs. The lighter, fueled by collectible fluid found throughout the environment, is crucial for burning teddy bears. The flashlight, powered by batteries scattered across the environment, helps navigate the dark and avoid the Mare. The camera, which can hold up to five pictures at a time, is your only weapon against the Mare and also has additional uses, which I will not spoil. Finally, spare light bulbs can be found to replace broken ones and maintain visibility. Mastering the use of these tools is key to surviving the Mare and completing the game. There is one more thing you can use against her, but I will leave that as a surprise for you to figure out for yourself. You also have an ability called Focus Memory, which reveals hidden messages, clues, and memories. It can alter the environment, uncover hidden areas, and help you solve environmental puzzles.
Environment & Scares
The game is divided into three chapters. The first two introduce the core mechanics and the tools at your disposal, and they are relatively linear in structure. The third chapter, however, shifts things up by taking place entirely within a single location: the House of the Mare. Notes are scattered throughout the environment, providing useful tips, tricks, and explanations of how certain mechanics in the game work. The house itself spans three floors: the main floor, the upper floor, and the basement. Its layout is thoughtfully designed, striking the perfect balance between size and complexity. You will explore familiar spaces like a living room with a fireplace, a kitchen, a dining area, hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms, and more. The Mare herself is the main source of horror, delivering creative jump scares while relentlessly pursuing you, creating a constant sense of panic. There is always the impending fear of running out of fluid, camera film, batteries, and bulbs, so survival requires careful resource management, as you must always keep an eye on your supplies. You need to be fast while exploring, but it’s easier said than done, given how damn scary this game is. Items in the house are persistent: once they spawn, they remain in place. For example, if you find batteries in the kitchen but already have nearly full power, it’s smarter to leave them for later when you’ve used some. Learning the house’s layout and item spawn locations is essential, but the game adds a clever twist: the Mare can alter the environment, temporarily removing doors, destroying bulbs, and otherwise changing the house as you navigate it. The teddy bears also feature dynamic behavior, unlike the static notes in Slender. They can jump from furniture or hiding spots and move to new locations, forcing you to chase them, sometimes straight into the path of the Mare. This unpredictability makes hunting the teddies both thrilling and terrifying. There’s a lot more horror to uncover, but I won’t spoil all of it.
Visual Design & Sound Design
The house features a modern yet simple 2026 furniture aesthetic, creating a familiar but unsettling environment. One of the game’s standout features is its use of shadows and lighting and is truly some of the most immersive darkness I’ve ever experienced in a horror game. The dynamic lighting adds tension: the flashlight casts a focused beam, illuminating specific areas, while the lighter provides a warm, broader glow that highlights the room around you. The Mare is genuinely terrifying. Her wide, unsettling grin, black dress, and dark hair, sometimes partially obscured by a veil, make her a haunting presence that lingers in your mind long after playing. Her appearance, movements, and sounds change depending on her rage level, creating a sense of evolving threat. At times, one of her sounds is reminiscent of the iconic horror tone from The Grudge, which I’ve always found creepy. The sound design is another of the game’s standout features and plays a crucial role in survival. The teddy bears make subtle noises, like occasional sneezes, that can hint at their hiding spots. Their tiny legs produce quick, light thuds as they scurry, which contrast sharply with the heavy, ominous thuds of the Mare’s footsteps. Listening carefully to these audio cues is essential for tracking both the teddies and the Mare. Additionally, every time you burn a teddy, the Mare screams in rage, revealing her position and signaling whether she is near or far, adding a tense auditory layer to the gameplay. The Mare’s sound design is constantly shifting, starting with subtle cues of her presence in her early stages, when she is not as visible, such as whispers and creaking floors.
Constructive Criticism
The environment is undeniably haunting, but it can feel a bit repetitive. If you’re not experienced with horror games or managing high-stress situations, this game can feel a bit challenging at first.
The Verdict
Unsealed: The Mare may be one of the most terrifying and panic-inducing horror games I’ve ever played. Its simplicity is deceptive, the gameplay is incredibly effective, intense, and full of creative design choices that keep you constantly on edge. The game delivers genuine nightmares, thanks to its unsettling visuals, immersive sound design, and haunting environment. The AI is clever and unpredictable, heightening the tension at every turn. I received the game for free as a beta tester because it was developed by my brother. Some might assume that my rating is biased, but that isn’t the case. He previously developed and released another game, Misplaced, which isn’t nearly as good. Even if this game had been made by someone else, my opinion would remain the same. If you search for “Gamhalla” on YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram, you can see clips of me testing and playing the game, and becoming completely traumatized. If you’re a fan of horror games, this is one I cannot recommend highly enough. It’s definitely one of the scariest horror games I’ve played, alongside MADiSON, Visage, Silent Hill P.T., and several Amnesia titles.
Rating: 10/10
Too scary, had lots of unexpected elements. Got humbled by a pipe.
Unsealed: The Mare is a horror game that clearly aimed for something deeper, but ultimately falls short in execution. While there’s a story buried within, it feels scattered and difficult to follow, making it hard to stay invested. The scares lack impact, never really delivering the tension or fear you’d expect from the genre, and the puzzles come off more frustrating than engaging or clever. Despite showing flashes of potential, the overall experience feels underwhelming and disappointing—making it hard to recommend, especially at its price point.
Unsealed: The Mare was a really solid experience. You play as Vera, trapped in a nightmare tied to her family’s tragic past—and from the moment things start moving, the game does a great job of keeping you in a constant state of panic. Because you are not alone. The Mare itself is incredibly well designed. It’s genuinely creepy, and the way it relentlessly chases you keeps the pressure high the entire time. There’s not much room to relax—once things start escalating, you’re pretty much in survival mode. The jumpscares are on point too. They’re timed well, and when they hit, they definitely get your attention. I will say, early on there’s a section where you’re collecting and burning cursed teddy bears, and at first it feels a little repetitive. But the game doesn’t stay in that loop for long. It builds on itself and starts to introduce more variety, so if you find yourself getting a little discouraged in the beginning, it’s absolutely worth sticking with. Overall, I really enjoyed this one. It’s tense, it’s creepy, and it keeps you moving the entire time without feeling overwhelming. I’m definitely interested to see what this developer does next. If you’re into chase-heavy horror with a strong sense of urgency, Unsealed: The Mare is a great pick. 👀
way too repetitive for this price
It mostly takes place the basement of a common house used in so many horror games I feel like I live there. it's more of a search for a certain number of bears or light the candles in a specific order to move on game. Almost all in the basement in a maze like fashion. If you heard someone say "the best game ever, 10/10" they probably got the game for free and never paid $20 CDN I don't mind it but it's far over priced. take a look here or try the demo first. https://youtu.be/7OaLjuDI9xU
This game takes a slightly different approach compared to other horror games, and I really liked that. One of the best mechanics is how, after you die, the positions of the “bears” you need to burn change, which keeps things fresh and unpredictable. The environment is genuinely scary, just like the monster itself. There’s also a deeper meaning and an actual story behind the game, which I appreciated a lot. It doesn’t feel overly repetitive, and there are quieter moments that give you a nice break from the constant tension and running. I also liked the stamina system it forces you to think about how you approach situations instead of just mindlessly sprinting. Once you really get into it, the game becomes amazing. The only downside is the length it’s a bit short, and I definitely would have liked more. Also, the checkpoints can feel too far apart, so if you mess up near the end, you might have to restart from the beginning. That was a bit frustrating, but it still makes sense from a design perspective. Overall, it’s a great game and definitely worth trying out.
Game has some pretty solid jumpscares in it... and I feel like there's a narrative they're trying to tell rather than just being the cat and mouse experience you'll be playing. I feel a more solid story with the game concept would do wonders... with that being said it's not an overall bad game. It's a fun little horror experience... and some of the puzzles in the game are quite complex (some of the ones I was completing my chat was saying they would've rage quit the game by now). I will say though... this game is not a $20 value by any means. It's not horrible... but it's not great either. This game feels more to me like it should've landed in the $5.99 - $7.99 range.
