About
--GAME OVERVIEW--
Rhythm Storm is a roguelike bullet heaven/horde survivor with heavy rhythmic elements. Your vehicle automatically aims and fires (player-controlled twin-stick firing is possible at any time) while you control movement and a special power. You select a vehicle, set it's initial configuration and powers, then proceed into the action. Nearly everything in the world (except you) moves to the beat, and your goal is to survive to the end of each song. There are 3 main worlds, a boss, and a bonus world, each with its own unique song and mix of enemies.
--VECTOR GRAPHICS, NO TEXTURES--
Rhythm Storm uses untextured lines and polygons in rendering the game world and UI (along with a few fullscreen effects). The game visuals are crisp and clear, and the more resolution you give it the better it looks. For the best experience, it is recommended that you play the game on a 1440p (or higher) monitor with a refresh rate of 120hz or higher. [Playing the game at 1080p/60hz is still enjoyable, just less than ideal.]
--RHYTHMIC GAMEPLAY--
Rhythm Storm is a musical experience, but it's not a traditional rhythm game. Nothing your vehicle does is synced to the music, but much of the world IS synced. Wave changes happen every 8 bars of music, powerups and the world pulse to the beat, the UI is jamming to the beat, and many of the enemies move to the beat. Enemy spawning is also synced. Though the game is heavily synced to the music, no musical talent or beat-synced button pressing is required to succeed at the game.
--REFINED BULLET HEAVEN FORMULA--
At its core, Rhythm Storm is similar to other Bullet Heaven/Swarm Survivor/Horde Survivor games in structure. At the start of the game, you configure your vehicle's default upgrades, which includes the starting weapon(s). You also select which 4 categories of upgrade types you want to see (these are called Upgrade Sets).
During gameplay, you destroy enemies and collect XP as usual. When you collect enough XP to upgrade, you'll choose between 2 sets of upgrades. Each set has 3 upgrades, two of which are from the upgrade set category, while the third upgrade is more random. It's simpler and more intuitive than it sounds, and keeps the pace of play going while still allowing for a variety of builds and dynamic choices. More choices are also available once you unlock the re-roll modifier (semi-permament meta-progression upgrades).

A remarkable game! You could say a decent thumbnail descriptor of Rhythm Storm is "Geometry Wars meets Vampire Survivors," but there's a lot going on here both on the surface and under it that makes it more than a clone. The chaos of the sheer number of particles and bullets and damage numbers and STUFF on the screen at once is incredible. If this isn't the most, uh, stuff ever on screen at once, it's gotta be top-10. It reminds me of obscure arcade shmup Exception (Taito, 2011) in that at certain points there must be hundreds if not thousands of things to shoot on the screen at one time. All of that plus the blazing neon vector graphics gives me a head rush in the best old school arcade way. The game is also lovingly crafted. At first, you might think "this doesn't feel like Geometry Wars at all, it's slow." But that's the starter ship, with no powerups. The game follows the tried and true action roguelike formula where there are powerups just for the run you're playing, or meta powerups that are permanent on that save file. I'm only a couple hours into the game, but some of the unlocked ships are certainly faster, made even more so depending on the aforementioned perks. And these ships feel quite different from each other, especially in their special weapons. These specials are important and really change your strategy. Will you choose the one that sends out arcs of electricity careening through all enemies nearby, or a bomb ring that expands around you as large as you think you can get away with before an enemy touches you, or do you want to dash into the middle of the neon horde and explode? Just take a look at the beginner strategy guide the developer wrote to see how deep this is under the hood: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2135960/discussions/0/594029415763215558/ Speaking of weapons, keep in mind this is a twin-stick shooter and your right stick is your main weapon IF you choose manual aim in settings. It's defaulted to auto-aim which I think does this game a disservice. There are not that many weapons to manage here so manual right stick aim really brings up the excitement level as you'll often want to be moving in one direction and shooting in another, like so many games made familiar since Robotron 2084. Ever since the great Housemarque left the arcade space to make AAA games in the Sony mines, Radiangames has really filled in making gem after gem of quality modern arcade-styled games with that old school look and care, and this might be their best one of them all. 9.5/10
I dunno. I might revisit this down the road, but I played it for a little while and just... it wasn't fun? I like bullet heavens, and I like over the top particle effects, but the game part just felt like a more random, complex Vamp Survivors with less payoff. Super stat-checky (which, to be fair, most bullet heavens are) but with absolutely no feedback about what anything does or why you are losing. The meta upgrades are insanely expensive, as well - at a guess, hundreds if not 1,000+ hours to unlock them and who knows if the game is balanced around them. So yea it just feels kinda rough right now, maybe in some months and some patches I can give it another go.
There is a lot that I like about this game, and I will probably play it once ever few months just to watch things explode... but that is for sure the highlight of the game. It truly looks beautiful and can be mesmerizing. However, every time I end up playing it, I am always end up saying things like, "what the f--- just hit me?" or "how did I just freaking die?" Basically, after the first level, the visual clarity goes out the window. The outline of most enemies become practically invisible and you can only clearly see the middle of them, which is a huge problem when there are like 300 enemies spawning all over the place constantly. For that reason alone, unfortunately, it gets put in the not recommended category. I also want to add that as far as I can tell, this is not a rhythm game although it is labeled as one. The music is really cool and there is a thumping on the controller's vibration generators, but you never have to stay on beat to do anything. But there is something about the controls that I like, and that is the ability to control where you are shooting if you want to. If you don't aim, it will automatically aim for you, but I like being able to choose to aim if I want to. Basically, this game does some things pretty well, but the incredible lack of visual clarity completely ruins it for me and makes me not want to play it for more than a couple runs at a time. I beat it once, and it was by using a character with a dash that kinda cheeses the game. If you are looking for some cheap vector-exploding thrills, you might like this one a lot though.
Pretty interesting loop until it isn't. Sadly it gets stale pretty fast, and the meta increasing its cost after every purchase is a decision I'll never understand, maybe if it increased by 10% of it's price it would feel okay, but currently you can get an upgrade and suddenly everything costs 1000 more, this gets worse when you know that a succesful run would net you 1k~, so if every upgrades is now 3k, that is 3 really good runs just to get one upgrade, then everything will go from 3k to maybe 4.5k, so grind, grind and more grind. If the game at least had good replayability it would be cool, but after a while you will get tired of seeing the same enemies (enemies just move or shoot), there isn't like any special enemy type that does anything more interesting than shooting more bullets or moving around you instead of in a line, so although there is a ton of build variety, enemies don't offer enough challenge to try those busted builds (take for example Nova Drift, where build possibilities are endless too, but enemies offer enough of a challenge to make the runs interesting, even on the easiest difficulty). All in all I think there is the structure of a great game, but it hasn't been pushed to its maximum potential due to design decisions that detriment the gameplay experience. Hope it can get better in the future, since its really not a bad game, I'd say it's more of a mixed opinion for me.

This is a hidden gem. Very fun to play and the visuals and music go hard.

What a great Bullet Hell....WE NEED THE OST ASAP!!!!
Question: What do you get when you combine the tanks from Tron's "Space Paranoids", a triple espresso and slick, modern, graphics? Answer: Rhythm Storm! Lightweight, fast-paced, easy to access but with a pace that quickly ramps up, I found this to be a quick and easy blast 'em up which satisfies the need for easily accessible action with a pretty coat of paint. Speaking of graphics; the game looks great and runs well even on my (now 10 year old!) system, and the sound FX and accompanying soundtrack pair really well with the on screen mayhem and menus alike! There's a lot to unlock if you stick with it, and progress can feel a little slow here, but that may be because of my own preference to dip in and play half an hour here and there, rather than really grind. YMMV. That said, for the price, it's a bargain and a whole lot of fun.
It's Geometry Wars Vampire Survivors. It rules.
