I'm not kidding when I say this has become my favorite game of all times. It's endlessly replayable, it's a masterclass in game design, and you can and will learn to beat each game if you spend enough time with each of them no matter how difficult they appear at first glance. It's a game that respects your time (mostly because you can always skip a game that bothers you) and it made me discover pleasure for genres that I always skipped before, particularly the puzzle and bullet hell/shoot-em-ups. I now only play it on my Nintendo Switch, but the Steam version is great. Everything about this game is amazing, I cannot recommend it enough.

it's kinda hard to review this thoroughly because of how much variety there is, but it's definitely worth picking it up just to jump around and play things at random. pretty much every genre you'd expect for the 80s/early 90s is covered so there's something for almost everyone however i want the person who made barbuta fired because who makes a metroidvania with no save system and limited lives. why would you do this. you are a menace to society.

This game is simply stupendous!

Probably the best deal you'll get on the market if you have the patience for 8-bit retro game design. 25USD, 17.50USD on sale, and 50 (possibly more, but no spoilers!) games to try. Puzzle, racing, rpg, dungeon-crawler, top-down zelda-likes, a few metroid-vanias, even tower defense and an idle game. Literally every genre 8-bit can feasibly do, they have it. The music is memorable and catchy (still can't get pilot quest's overworld theme out of my head, nor the camp theme for that matter), and hundreds of hours of content are here, for less than a gig, and less than a nice dinner. Even if you hate 85 percent of the games, that 15 percent will be ones you love, and will make the price tag worth it, so long as you're willing to give the punishing retro difficulty a proper college try. For those who dismiss this collection as nothing more than arcade time-wasters or "ugly", this game isn't for you. If you're hesitant about picking it up because you think giving any time of day to 8bit games is a waste, it isn't for you. If you care more about graphics than fun game design or challenging ideas, this also isn't for you. This isn't said out of disparagement, this game is just meant for a specific demographic, and people who play for the audiovisual experience of it and dislike the retro aesthetic or think it's a waste of time, you will not be swayed by this collection, because it is meant as a love-letter and an attempt to build upon those retro ideas with modern QoL improvements, not change the game altogether to be more modern. So it may be easier for you to enjoy, but you simply won't see the hype the same as others. But if you're among the growing cadre of gamers who appreciate being challenged on many levels, who have the patience to learn the jank and the clunk, you will sink hundreds and hundreds of hours without even realizing it on this "little" gem. And for a smaller subsection of that cadre, the ones who have ADD or ADHD like me, this collection is a godsend. Every genre, at my fingertips, for whatever mood strikes me. Whenever I get bored or frustrated with one, I just move on to another. And for another, even more niche subsection, one which appreciates unfiction and ARGs, funny enough, there might just be a 51st game available. Look real carefully at barbuta and night manor. And maybe, if you beat the hypothetical 51st game, you'll solve the 52nd, and the final true game that completes the parallel to action 52 (the game it is clearly emulating), the meta-game. The real story of what happened to UFOsoft. But that's all I can share, wouldn't want to spoil the fun for those who enjoy the scavenger hunt. ;) To wrap up this unabashed glazing, I'll finish by stating that this is probably one of the most ambitious collections to be created. So many pithy experiences, full of hidden depth and secrets. So many fun things to check out and explore, and so much variety, far more than any other game I've played, modern or otherwise. 100/10, would rate it 1000/10 but combatants and hot foot single player mode both exist on this collection, so I can't rate it any higher than that.

Really cool ideas in a neat retro package. Even the games I didn’t vibe with were cool conceptually and fun to play. Cannot recommend it enough.

Action 52 except it made me cry, rage quit, laugh out loud, jump out of my seat, and rediscover why I love video games. This is the best video game.

I don't know if you need to hear this, but by purchasing this game you will spend $25 (potentially less) for 50 full-length games complete with easter eggs and alternate endings. Please buy this game.

Honestly if you enjoy NES style games, in this 50 pack I am sure you will find at least 10-20 you somewhat like. 5 you really enjoy. A few you cant stand. and a few you just cant stop playing.

I usually drop most games I pick up pretty quick, but I ended up enjoying ufo50 way more than I thought I would. Some of the games I tried in the collection didn’t seem very appealing to me at first but it didn’t take long for me to find ones I ended up liking. The way the progression system works with mastering/completing games is also very well implemented, alongside collectables for each game tied to a specific task. Some (or even most) games are a little hard but it’s nothing you won’t be able to pin down with a bit of practice. I’m far from completing most games but I wouldn’t mind revisiting games I didn’t like again in the future since they aren’t inherently bad, just genres I’m not interested in. A lot of the games also have co-op included, which is nice if you want to play locally or with other people you have added beforehand. I could see a lot of these games being very fun in a couch co-op setting. There’s also a meta narrative/story that unfolds in the background for those that care, and the soundtrack is amazing throughout. Overall, the presentation is amazing and I love the charm the games have. You can tell the devs put a lot of effort into this and i’d definitely recommend giving it a shot.
