TZOMPANTLI stands apart from many independent fighting games by embracing a setting and artistic direction rarely explored in the genre. Inspired by the comic book universe created by Mexican artist and writer Edgar Clément, the game throws players into a surreal conflict where supernatural beings, legendary creatures, warriors, law enforcement, and advanced machines collide in pursuit of a single objective: claiming the bounty placed on the Archangel Michael. This unusual premise immediately gives the game a memorable identity, combining mythology, folklore, religious symbolism, and comic-inspired storytelling into a world that feels imaginative from beginning to end. Instead of relying on familiar martial arts clichés or futuristic tournament settings, TZOMPANTLI confidently embraces its cultural roots, resulting in a fighting game with genuine personality. The combat is designed around classic 2D fighting mechanics while remaining accessible enough for newcomers. Each fighter possesses a distinct collection of standard attacks, signature techniques, and powerful super moves that encourage players to experiment with different playstyles. The combo system rewards timing and practice without becoming overwhelmingly technical, making battles enjoyable whether players are simply looking for casual matches or hoping to master each character's abilities. A dedicated training mode provides an opportunity to learn every move and refine strategies, while local versus multiplayer delivers the competitive excitement expected from traditional fighting games. Although veterans of the genre may find the mechanics somewhat less complex than those of larger competitive titles, the gameplay remains responsive and entertaining thanks to its straightforward design and energetic pacing. Visually, TZOMPANTLI succeeds in capturing the appearance of a living comic book. Its cel-shaded presentation faithfully reflects Edgar Clément's distinctive artistic style, giving every character, environment, and animation a handcrafted quality. The roster features ten playable fighters along with two unlockable characters, each bringing unique visual designs and personalities that reinforce the game's unusual setting. Alternate costumes provide additional customization, while thirteen diverse stages inspired by the original comics keep the arenas visually engaging throughout repeated matches. Complementing the action is an original soundtrack created by DJ INSANO, Leonardo Castillo, and FROSTER, whose music enhances both the intensity of combat and the game's unmistakable atmosphere. The game's story mode offers more than a standard arcade ladder by presenting individual narratives for every fighter through a visual novel-inspired format. These stories continue the events established in the Operación Bolívar and Perros Salvajes comic series, giving longtime fans additional lore and character development while helping newcomers better understand the game's unusual world. However, one drawback is that the narrative remains available only in Spanish, limiting its accessibility for players who do not speak the language. Even with this limitation, the effort invested in expanding the source material demonstrates the developers' commitment to creating an authentic adaptation instead of simply using the license as a backdrop for combat. As an Early Access project, TZOMPANTLI originally promised additional content, interface improvements, Steam features, achievements, and further refinements. Unfortunately, those plans were never fully realized, leaving the game feeling somewhat unfinished compared to modern fighting titles. Certain interface elements and overall polish reveal its incomplete status, and the lack of continued updates prevents many of its ambitious ideas from reaching their full potential. Nevertheless, the existing content still showcases a creative vision supported by a passionate development team that clearly wanted to deliver something different from the countless conventional fighters available on the market. Despite its unfinished nature, TZOMPANTLI remains an easy recommendation for players interested in discovering unique independent fighting games with strong artistic direction and cultural authenticity. Its imaginative world, memorable cast, comic-inspired visuals, and accessible gameplay combine to create an experience that distinguishes itself through originality rather than technical complexity. While it may not rival the depth or refinement of genre heavyweights, it succeeds as a creative passion project that celebrates Mexican mythology and storytelling in a way few games attempt. Those willing to overlook its rough edges will find an inventive fighter filled with charm, individuality, and a refreshing perspective rarely seen within the genre. Rating: 6/10
good
Very nice game
It's a weird fighting game. It's ok I guess, but seems abandoned.
Game just won't start. Seems abandoned from the developers.
