I'll start off with the somewhat obvious- this is a narrative driven walking simulator. You will not have free open-world exploration, but there are discoveries that you will miss if you rush through and do not explore what the game allows you to explore. Look for white circles that turn into either an eye (discovery or story progression), or an arrow (travel). The game is on rails- you do have choices in dialogue choices, but they will not affect the outcome, only the personality and "character of the character". They open up different dialogues with NPCs (make manual backups if you want to see them without replaying the game). Second- if you don't have an open mind and aren't willing to learn history from a perspective that may not have been taught to you at school- this won't be the game for you. It is historical fiction- the story you are being told by the characters is fictional, based on historical facts, many of which have been pushed aside and whitewashed over time. Yes, there are morals to the story. Cut there are some good provable facts, most of which are passed on in the Codex. The Codex involves a lot of reading- if you hate reading, this game isn't going to be for you. But if you like or don't mind reading- there is some good information about the local flora and fauna, the indigenous peoples of the area, and the French colonists who built colonial Quebec. You may learn a few things you never heard about before. The stylized art is quite beautiful to my eye. The music is fantastic. The ambient sounds and voice acting are all quite good. The game does have some optimization and perf issues- I played on Win 10 22H2/ i9 9900K/ 2070 RTX Super/ 16 GB RAM. And I did have to set things to Low settings to deal with some hitching and framerate spikes where fps dropped significantly at times. No crashes for me, but a few times where the game did freeze up for a moment. So be aware of that before buying. Rigs with minimum specs are likely to really struggle. I was playing from an HDD, so that may have been part of the issues for me- an SSD may perform better and provide a smoother experience. ***ACCESSIBILITY*** There is a lot of reading, and the text in the Codex is small with no way to scale it up that I could find. The screen reader I tried was able to read it all, but it did struggle with some of the indigenous words and names, and some of the stylized fonts used at times. For Deaf or HoH players- still playable as all voice acting is also delivered in text, though you will miss out on the ambient sounds and music cues. (No combat- music cues seem to mainly prepare you for what you are going to see next). There is some gore, blood, and traumatic content, and a number of distressing or disturbing things that happen or are said. Limited profanity, no way to turn it off. It is part of the story. Things to be aware of if you or the person you are buying this for have any strong sensitivities to these things. I did enjoy it in spite of the perf issues I had. I also don't have baked in hatred or disdain for indigenous peoples, though I will admit to a dislike for religious zealots of any faith and colonizers. This is a game telling an activist story- which I am fine with. But if you are one of those people who are all anti-politics/anti-activism in games- don't buy it. The whole point of the story in this game is to teach you things you may never have heard of before, and that may make you very uncomfortable. It isn't a "boy meets girl, girl falls in love with boy, life is good, and happily ever after!" story.
I'd like to give this game a positive review, but right now I can't. The visuals and controls are very choppy and jerky no matter how I tinker with the settings. I'm playing on a Steam Deck so I'll do some research and see if I can figure out how to fix this, but right now I physically can't play the game because it's causing motion sickness. I got through the first chapter before I gave up (due to the aforementioned issues). The story seems like it should have promise, and I'd like to find a way to finish it. The writing isn't the best, however. A lot of the dialogue seems off to me, and the subtitles look like they were written by my boomer stepdad (why are so many random words put into quotation marks?). So far I think the soundtrack is my favorite part of the game. The scary music is REALLY scary and the rest of the soundtrack fits nicely with the tone of the moment. TLDR. Okay for a rainy day. Pick it up when discounted 75% or more. A walking simulator if ever there is one. Literally at times. A nice lesson on the flora, fauna and history of early colonial Quebec. Class material more than a game. It’s short. Seven and a half hours in which I let the game run sometimes while doing other chores. So actually an hour or so shorter. Simple graphics. Poor voice acting (English version played). A linear game with set out paths (nothing wrong with that). Your input is occasionally choosing one of two dialog options. This should effect your character development and relationship with other people. Didn’t notice much of a difference. On the good side. There is an emotional moment that really worked for me.
While I appreciate the themes it's trying to explore, Two Falls is probably the most boring and dull "walking simulator" (and even that's a stretch) I've ever played. It's extremely passive, lacking meaningful interactions or even exploration. As if that wasn't bad enough, its creators decided to use one of the cheapest tricks in storytelling -
killing an animal
- to attempt to force any emotional response from the players. Sorry to say it's a no from me (and my dog).
I had the pleasure of visiting the Innu reserve last summer and learning about their culture and deep ties to the land and all that lives on it. It was a privilege to return to those forests in digital form and experience this incredibly moving story about the history of the land my family settled on a few hundred years later. This game is incredibly well-written, gorgeous, and depicts the reality of this land's history that too many people living on it often forget. Thank you for this gift.
Very good narrative driven adventure. it has some beautiful landscapes, interesting story and great voice acting. I just think it was wasting potential to not let the characters speak french or their native languages the whole game. Also I think the story about some kind of monster and the winter spirit go nowhere and the game would be better without those. For achievement hunters: be wary that the game does not have a chapter select and you can't skip any dialogues or cutscenes, so make sure you don't miss anything, as the game is quite long for the genre (about 5 hours).
