Reviews
In the style of Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger with the SNES like graphics. Nice characters, a coming of age sort of story set with the characters as teenagers in a magic school. The authors put a lot of time into the world and talks about locations, because the glossary is very detailed and there is even a quiz at the start that asks you questions about it. I can see influence from Dungeons and Dragons, especially with how magic works, and there is a great emphasis placed on how the different cultures treat and think of each other. Playing on student and the battles have been pretty easy so far. Each character feels unique and they all have set roles. The game is very linear, which is my biggest complaint. No bugs so far.
Detailed review ahead. TL:DR: A solid RPG Maker game definitely worth it's price Won this game on a raffle on twitch. Was not disappointed. Trials of Guinevere is a solid RPG Maker Game. Maps are beautiful and there are many little details and effects floating around, catching the magical atmosphere of it very nicely. Of course I had some nitpicks here and there but they are mostly personal taste. NPCs are VERY talkative and there is A LOT of reading to be done in this one but that can also be a good thing. Npcs like this feel much more alive than in most games of the kind. The character art quality is a bit on the "lower" side. They look good but you can see some errors with eye placement, facial shapes and such. Could be improved but does not kill the game in any way. The combat is a solid system and well thought out. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and can not understand some of the review saying it's too hard. Sure, the first few fights were tough as nails and you had to rely a bit on luck with the enemy targeting, after those, however it was smooth sailing. Audio was also well picked and fits the locations you are in. Combat music could be a bit more wild imho, but that's just me. I didn't progress very far, but I will continue the game and do more streams on it on https://www.twitch.tv/sgharlekin Not much else to add here. In my opinion, this developer put a lot of work in this project and it shows. 9/10 would buy.
A bit of a lukewarm recommend. I enjoyed playing in short chunks but didn't find the story gripping. Pros: - Combat is great, with tactical, interesting options that make each battle strategic. Unlike many RPGs, fighting doesn't become tedious. - No random encounters - hurray! - Graphics are good and the game is pretty. - Story is a refreshing departure from the usual start-as-a-peasant-with-a-rusty-knife-in-a-tiny-village. - You can rename all major characters. Cons: - There's a strange sense of starting the story in the middle. We're flung straight into the action and have little time to warm to the characters. I didn't find the narrative gripping. - The game is very wordy and I skim-read a lot of it. Character interactions were often overlong and dull. - Unresolved mysteries remained at the end (Morgan's memories; Whitney's identity, etc.) - The game crashed a couple of times, so save often. - There's no walkthrough, so if you're stuck, you're on your own. Often it wasn't clear how to progress the story and I seemed to be stuck in an area. Generally, if you're in this situation, a) talk to everybody, and b) interact with all the walls, specifically the blocks that are sometimes doors in disguise. (If you're stuck in the dungeon, note that you can push the levers back up again!)
The Game is a lot of fun it reminds me of playing a table top game without having to roll for success. I am playing in story mode so the fights are easy but that is what I like. I play games for the story and I have been really enjoying this story. I am in the beginning of Act 2 and it is holding my interest continuously it is like a good book I don't want to stop I want to know what is next.
Trials of Guinevere is an incredible story game. Unlike a lot of standard JRPG's where you grind out mobs and level up nonstop, that's not what this game is about. This is a VERY WELL DONE story game. THe graphics and the maps are beautiful! The dev(s) did a very good job on bringing the atmosphere to life. I have a strong feeling this game is under appreciated by the market at this current point in time, and I truly hope it gets the credit it deserves as more and more people find out about it. THere is a plethora of NPC's to interact with and they're all very well thought out. Keep in mind, this isn't the game for mindless mob killing, this actually has real depth to it. The dev also kept an open mind when players had issues with difficulty, which I think is huge when deciding if you want to jump in or not!! Action/Combat= THe back half of the game picks up and has significantly more combat than the first, and that being said, the battles I would say are to be considered strategic. Things are tight, and typically will require some form of forethought to ensure victory. Trust me when I say it's a good thing! I Can't say enough good things about Trials of Guinevere, it's a very solid game- absolutely beautiful. I encourage you to give it a shot!
On an objective level, this game is pretty bad. It's very much the first work of a complete amateur game designer. It's got balance issues, and issues where objectives are made very unclear. HOWEVER, the characters have won me over into giving this game a positive review. There's a sense of amateurish charm to it that you don't get from more experienced developers or more polished games. This dev has some great potential. I haven't played his second game, Trials of Kokoro, yet, but I hope he learns from making this game. Overall this game is a 4 or 5 out of 10, that I love like an 8/10.
Full Disclosure: I know the Dev. I did not receive the game for free. Overall 8.5/10 : Very enjoyable. Lots of lore and great world building. Challenging meaningful combat. Context: I am a 40 year old RPG veteran with many tactical and traditional RPGs under my belt. I played the game on the Hard difficulty (Journeyman) and my review will be based on that difficulty setting. Story/Lore: The game is an RPG billed as being a visual novel. It sets the standard and doesnt fall very short of it. There is tons of dialogue, story, and lore. The Dev really fleshed out this world. If im being honest its closer to a Novella than novel just because the information and the relationships are built quite quickly. If you've read novellas you know that they are a bit shorter and to the point than novels about these things. Its not a bad thing, it works perfectly and the execution is nice. The story has a familiar but different feel that you would expect from a non indie production. It doesnt break ground as far as story goes but it is engaging enough to be compelling and to continue give that little prickle in the back of your mind to want to find out what happens next and pulls you to want to "do the next thing". I also enjoyed that act II occured in tandem with act I and playing a new set of characters gave it a read Dragon Quest IV type of feel. The dev also included some gameplay experiences that i can say I haven't been seen in a game before. They are subtle, but they did make me say "well thats awesome." Don't worry i wont spoil it for you. I also appreciate very heavily that there are no side quests in the game to break from the overall feel of urgency that permeates it. All in all i give this part of the game a solid 7,5/10 Combat: First and foremost, THERE is no FACEROLLING a combat in this game. The combat is VERY tight. This is the part that i personally liked the most. There aren't innumerable battles or any grinding. You have tools and a team and are expected to overcome different fights with those tools. You cant buy your way out by grinding money or overpower enemies by gaining levels. Each fight is different, at least. I dont remember any fight being a copy of another. That said it gives each fight its own dynamic and each has unique challenges in order to overcome. More importantly the fights DO NOT lean on DAMAGE SPONGE or sudden TRAIN IS A COMING damage. Its combat has a mulilayered tactical approach. To clarify there are many buffs/debuffs you have to think about and manage while planning what attacks or support moves you will use in order to get through successfully. Even more importantly i HAD use items in fights to get through. Something that is foreign to me. And then there are the truly backbreaking "Optional" fights you can find for extra white knuckle challenges. After completing a section of story, or trial as it were, you gain Powerlevel and therefore unlock new skills. These new things are extra skills in your tool kit which are very well balanced for the next incoming fights. I finished many fights in this game with just one character standing. It was a fantastic feeling. I never felt overpowered, I felt like i was struggling from start to finish. It was grand, but also saddening knowing I probably wont experience anything like it in an RPG or strategy game again anytime soon, if ever. This part of the game gets a 9.5/10 from me. Art and Music: Im not a fancy person. This part will be brief. Hand drawn portraits that change in combat based on injury and some debuffs.. Very cool. Music was well chosen, but most of the time I was too busy thinking about the next fight to pay a lot of attention to it. Atmosphere: perfectly executed. Urgency, terror, and danger. solid 8/10 All in all im very pleased to have spent 16 or so hours in the game. Well worth the price of admission. My overall score assumes that story and combat are weighed much more heavily than art and music. So, my only question now i guess would be DLC when?
Haven't gotten too far into it myself but it's quite fun so far, the targeting system wasn't too hard to figure out and the animations were quite nice. The game doesn't really hand hold so it is easy to get a little lost if you aren't paying attention really due to real life distractions or anything like that, but it is easy to figure out where you need to go next. Overall a wonderful little title to just play with from time to time
Disclaimer that I played quite a few hours offline, so my time on here isn't synced to how long I really played. I definitely recommend this game to anyone who wants to be enthralled and immersed in an amazing story with characters that I was honestly surprisingly invested in, a highly strategic combat system, solid graphics, great soundtrack, and overall a presentation that fully engaged me the whole way through. While this is a very text-heavy experience that plays like a more engaging visual novel entwined with a JRPG, it still ticked every box for a really enjoyable game. I'd love to see the dev create a longer game that is a more traditional JRPG experience with the same battle system as this one, or a more refined version that keeps similar mechanics. Would love to see a direct sequel done like that. I'm a big fan of turn-based RPGs so I hope to see more games in the vein of this one, and not a bullet hell system or card-battling one but that's personal preference. Also appreciated the difficulty options. Great game, involved me from the start, and definitely would recommend others to play this hidden gem!
