Unfortunately, despite really really REALLY wanting to recommend Celestial Tear ep 1, after my ten hours of play I can't do it. Pros: +Excellent comic-style line art +Decent production values - original graphics, sound, music, voice acting +Mostly original combat system that takes inspiration from Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, and others +Loads of not-terrible writing in form of dialogue and journal entries +Indie JRPG on Steam +Female protagonist (sorta) Cons: (As disclaimer, most cons are related to using the RPG Maker engine) -Low resolution, no graphics scaler options. This makes the game look very grainy and pixelated, despite the art being technically sound. -Hiccups. Constant hiccups. The longer I play the game, the more frequent and annoying they get. After several hours, don't be suprised if your screen pauses for nearly an entire second every 4-5 seconds. -Framerate issues. Only one or two maps are designed to allot for full framerate in the RPG Maker engine. -Bugs. Despite being delayed for several months, I've encountered sloppy scripting issues, text issues (mostly grammar related), invisible barriers, and items that don't do what they say (Stun, for the record is apparently not a "physical status ailment"). -Characters. Characterization is forced and almost everyone fills a trope. You won't find much originality here, except for the female protagonist. -Heavy balance issues. You'll encounter enemies that can deal 50 damage to one character and 5 to the other. You'll have battles that will take you forever and consume all your items and you'll be rewarded with 7 XP; or you'll fight a battle which is over in one attack and you'll be rewarded with 30-40. I only found one shop in episode 1, and I was only able to shop there once. This is a moot point since you can only carry 8 items of any one type at a time, and if you find any more they will be immediately discarded (even in chests). The Legend of Dragoon-style pinch-defend-heal is actually the most effective way to heal in the game, so I recommend in every battle you get the opportunity to delay killing the last enemy and defend-heal up to max so you don't waste items and MP. Grinding, too, is near-impossible, since it seems monsters only respawn when it's inconvenient, and not when it would be nice to gain XP. -Dungeons are way too long. There are several areas in every dungeon which is simply a path populated with monsters. I'm pretty sure the devs of Pier Solar would get tired of the dungeons in this game. -Puzzles are often not very intuitive and the clunkiness of the controls lead you having to repeat them over and over and over. In short, if you don't mind the RPG Maker engine and a game that is too big for its britches, you'll enjoy Celestial Tear. The plot is interesting enough and combat is challenging (though not exactly rewarding, and unbalanced), but this isn't going to win any awards, especially when the intro cinematic -- the most impressive part of the game -- won't even play without constant stutter. You can't help but think with this level of dedication, scripting and custom assets, a more sensible engine choice (like Unity) wouldn't make more sense. RPG Maker has already been committed though, and that's the primary shame. [Reviewed on Win7 Pro]

I am a tester for Celestial Tear: Demon’s Revenge and was provided a copy for testing purposes. The indie scene for games is constantly growing and evolving especially in the PC game market. White Guardian Studios is no exception. Celestial Tear: Demon’s Revenge shows promise to deliver a great experience for gamers to enjoy. Don’t let the RPG Maker tag scare you. This game is definitely not your average RPG Maker game. Custom graphics, music, limited voice acting, and completely overhauled combat just to name a few. The game is an episodic game taking place over 5 chapters. This is chapter 1 of the series. Storylines switch between Sen, a human turned demon trying to find her place, and Jagen, an aristocrat type character seeking revenge and justice. I found both storylines to be interesting but seemed to favor Sen’s character. While the developer reveals some things about Sen’s past there are parts that are still a mystery. Combat revolves around use of attack combos (think Street Fighter to an extent) to deal maximum damage. The characters build up energy to release powerful attacks that can deal more damage than just spam attacking. You can also utilize “magic” to an extent. Here is where I feel the game is really trying to do too much. Allowing for regular attacks, combo attacks, and different levels of magic tends to feel a bit overwhelming. The key here was finding out what works best for you as a player. This took a bit of experimenting for me but found using combos and healing with Jagen worked best for me. I am a firm believer of supporting indie developers in their work if they show promise to deliver engaging content. I believe that White Guardian Studios can do just that.
This is easily one of the most unique games of 2015! Marrying classic JRPG mechanics with hand-drawn comic-inspired graphics to make a beautiful gaming experience like nothing played before. Add on an engrossing and intricate storyline, future episodic adventures with a price that's far too low for the amount of content offered and you've got an amazing game for the price point.
Game is all good and nice, but I had few problem. -FPS issues -Bugs such as --selecting inventory that didn't let me in --drowning bar is still on when I got out of the water the main problem is the FPS, you just play the game for a good 20 minutes, BOOM huge lag, huge fps drop. impossible to play it. Would love to continue but a little bit upgrade and fix would be helpful.
This is quite an impressive game (for RPG Maker) with its visuals, philosophy, and voice acting. The combat system is similar to Xenogears, with being able to combo light, medium and heavy attacks. The philosophy derives from ethics and seeing that even treating people as equals can result in hypocrisy, or sometimes prejudices can be justified with good intentions (though of course some may be extreme). I also like that the characters can be different and willing to work with one another despite disagreeing on things (can a tree hugger blame someone who lost his family to demons for wanting revenge?) initially. Only 2 things I didn't like so far: 1) The beginning of the game is a text heavy drag, with you moving really slowly (keep going down past the wall as it is really an underpass once you touch it). 2) Don't mislead players; I already mentioned the bit with the wall that as you walk down you can see it becomes an overpass (was stuck for a little while). I want an initial choice of 3 characters if 3 are shown at 1 time, not have 4 characters with only 3 visible at once to choose 2 from. I don't know if this is an episode based thing as the game only released episode 1 (which I bought) now, and the other 2 characters can be chosen once the other episodes are released, but that is a bit misleading. To give a sample of the writing, upon choosing the character (the other 2 you can't choose), there are quotes like, "The world breaks everyone and afterward(s) (typo should be fixed), some are stronger at the broken places,", or, "An eye for an eye and the whole world would be blind." Overall, be patient with the game if you like to read and I find it definitely worth $5. I would wait before episodes 2 and 3 are completed before buying them all at once; episode 1 was pending release on Steam for the longest and I have no idea if/when those later episodes will be released.
I don't usually like hard games, but I found this one to be surprisingly enjoyable. The challenge is definitely there to make you think and can be unforgiving in places but still makes me want to keep trying. It's obvious that the devs spent a lot of time on visuals and animation and that's something I definitely appreciate as both an indie dev and gamer myself. Map design, environments, music and gameplay, too, have all been very enjoyable to me and I love the unique comic-style art over the JRPG-like experience. Definitely recommend this to RPG fans.
This game makes you remember what old school JRPGs used to be, Hard and sometimes frustrating but once you manage to go forward past these parts you really feel like you have accomplished a quest in real life ;D .. the battle System is based on Xenogears for the combos and Suikoden for the MP system, two of the best BS ever created in one :D .. the story is very interesting besides an initial feeling of being rushed in a world setting that isn't explained enough, this first part is a prologue and I managed to finish it taking my time in almost 8 hours but the game as it is should be beatable under 6 hours, but the devs took their time in creating complex areas and dungeons that are WORTH to be explored to find rare items and gears so you should do so. Another thing I liked is the fact that the choices that you do will have an impact on the future chapters, creating rivals or changing the monsters that populate an area... a nice touch by the devs was also putting some optional bosses that is not possible to beat right now besides the fact that you can actually challenge them... it makes you understand that it will be worth revisiting some areas and so some backtracking ... I hope the next chapters come out as soon as possible because as it is it feels a bit of an incomplete experience. PRO - Above averange difficculty - Deep battle system - Worth to take your time exporing the maps - Very good graphic and music to be an RPG MAKER game - Interesting world setting and charaters - Good voiceovers CONS - Too short as it is now - Some boss fights should be better balanced - The movies are not subtitled, this makes a bit difficcult to understand some lines.
Disclaimer: I've Beta Tested this game, they provided me beta key for free and they also going to credit me for beta testing. Well, I didn't write many reviews before, so writing a review for this one made me think quite a while. So I decided to write positives and negatives of the game instead. Positives:

Interesting storyline
Interesting side quests
Original character classes (spoiler
e.g. A druid- like that casts fire spells, a warrior that heals, a healer that casts lightning spells and a "devil" that casts water spells
)
Original combat system (Combo system like fighting games, high, medium and low attacks in specific order follows up special moves if your "combo bar" is filled enough)
Detailed skill tree
Very good background music.
Negatives:

Voice acting was bad, that I had to turn it off.
Would I buy this game? Most important thing in a game for me is story. After playing and finishing episode 1, I say I would buy it since story and characters was interesting. I actually wonder what will be happen on the upcoming episodes.
Despite my frustrations I did still enjoy what has been released of Celestial Tear: Demon’s Revenge so far. The plot has intrigued me to the point that I am interested to see where they take the narrative in the next installments. The idea of one group of people branding another as evil just for being “different” resonates in me and I’d love to see Sen and Jagen meet each other, to see their reactions, and maybe form a bond despite them being an “enemy” to each other. If there’s one thing that I really hated about my experience is that I couldn’t watch the cutscenes. It could be my system but they ran so choppily that I couldn’t understand what was going on. At least the rest of the game played smoothly enough to enjoy my playthrough. http://cliqist.com/2015/12/04/celestial-tear-demons-revenge-short-rpg-interesting-twist/
