I've just finished this game and can wholeheartedly recommend it. I had a great time in the well-crafted world of Vitaria with its deep lore and love for details. I can't help but be amazed at how much thought was put into the details of this whole universe. The game really shines at the entertaining and well-written dialogs between the likeable characters that grow on you the longer you play. It also touches on some interesting topics personal to the characters. Although the beginning of the story may appear cliché - light and darkness, a warlord, some heroes and crystals - it doesn't take long for you to notice that Trials of Guinevere often defies stereotypes and manages to tell an engaging story. The battle system and the RPG mechanics are also carefully chosen and rather forgiving: There are no random encounters and no grinding, the party is healed fully after each battle and spells are learned at certain points in the game, but can be combined in interesting ways. The battles are not hard in general, but there's a few optional bosses which will give you a run for your money. If there's anything I could complain about, it would be that I occasionally lost track about who attacked whom due to the sometimes heavy screen colors used in battle. The experience is topped off with a selection of pleasing and very fitting music. I'm looking forward to playing the upcoming installments in this series :)
There are many RPGs on the Steam shop, but the feeling is that Trials of Guinivere is different from the rest. The story is very interesting. I've played a little, but enough to say that I like this game. In fact, I need to keep digging into the story and its characters.
English: Super good story-focused game with decisions (These are the best, as you know^^). The battles are cool and hard -but always fair. Especially the optional ones. The player has always the choice to go further, or to do the optional stuff, before moving further. The battles are very strategic. After every battle, all the ressources you have are restored, but that doesen't mean that the game is easy. Every battle is a challenge. The optional ones are hard, but doable and rewarding, The atmosphere is really good (I was very sceptical at the Intro, but after all it was good) and the world has lots of lore to offer. The game is very linear! BUT! There are choices :D There are dialogue choices and various other ones. The story is captivating and well written. All the characters have a personality and are deep enough and don't bother the player with uninteresting stuff! They (and the decisions) are always believable and immersive. I was sceptical at first... But I really like that game! It's very very cool and REALLY fun to play! Because its hard but fair! My opinion: Buy this game. I am sure, that you wasted more money on some AAA-♥♥♥♥, that wasn't as captivating as this game. Damit punktet Trials of Guinevere ganz besonders gut.
Hi. Played on story mode and really enjoyed the game, despite its heartbreaking moments. Yes, there's a lot of reading to do, and i learned early on to take notes, but for me, it wasn't a problem as i prefer story rich RPGs. Many thanks to the dev who put great heart into his game. Thoroughly recommend. Kind regards, Di.
It bangs.
Usually I am wary of RPG Maker games because often they lack soul. Here the case is way different! The story is amazing, the plot twists are fun and unexpected and the multiple endings makes it worth to play again. I feel in love with the characters and the world and hope to see more from them in the future!
Short review. I'll start by saying Trials of Guinevere’s worldbuilding is its greatest strength. TD Games clearly put a LOT of time, effort, and care into crafting the Trials universe and lore of Vitaria. Especially the politics, culture, and how the magic system works. I'm a huge nerd when it comes to lore and glossaries anyway. So it was fascinating to read through all the books in the Academy library. It's definitely worth it to explore each map thoroughly since there's important details and/or hidden items that you could easily miss. Same goes for talking to the NPC's they always have something interesting to say and their dialogue adds to the story/world and makes them feel more like people. It's a great example of how NPC's should be done in JRPG's. Also, the story is paced well and the characters are memorable. Every choice the player makes has weight + actual stakes that matter, even early as Act 1. You always have this sense that there’s more going on under the surface as the game slowly peels back the layers. The battle system itself is also very well thought out. Every boss fight has its own strategy and once you figure it out and nail the enemies weak spot it is very satisfying. Although, I will admit... I still haven't beaten the game yet (even on Student mode, the other modes were too hard) but, I will update my review when I finish my first playthrough! All in all, Trials of Guinevere is an absolute gem of an RPG Maker game. TD games did a fantastic job and I’m excited to play future games in the Trials series as well! :)
Sorry, I can't recommend this game. It starts interesting..that is till the first dungeon. You must combine levers of different colors to open/shut doors...not only on this but also the upper/lower level. That's all done without any minimap..meaning if you don't have a good memory remembering which door needs that color switch you are running around in circles. And quite frankly I've done that enough over 40 years ago. That is one of the parts of *Good Old Games* that I don't miss!!! Add the devs decision that you don't gain any exp during the dungeon (don't know if that changes later on)....Hey, dev one of the reasons most players like RPG's is the fact that you can level up your characters!
This game is an example of bad design. As a VN it is kind of fun but as an RPG which is what I bought it for, it falls terribly flat, so that is why i'm giving it a negative. If it had been marketed as a VN from the start with no RPG elements or battles I'd mark it as a positive. More details below. Where to begin? This game suffers from a few major problems that really grated at me more and more as I played it. For starters, one of the first maps was so bright it actually hurt my eyes. Tone down the sunbeams and bloom please! I really should not need sunglasses on to play an RPG on my PC. The text speed in this game was terribly annoying. Can we PLEASE stop with typewriter sounds and slow text that cannot be sped up? That is just a waste of my time as I am constantly waiting for you to get past your forced pauses so I can read the rest of the text. And then the battles. Ooooh boooy. On the easiest difficulty they are a total joke as you one shot almost everything. On normal they are too much. The game needs a middle between those two. And it is marketed as 'strategic' but its really not. Its hope for good RNG. Equips that give you a 5% or 10% chance to evade is not strategic, its pray the RNG favors you and not them. Or an armor where you can get 10% chance to deflect magic. And so on. And to top it off, battles are really pointless in this game. You don't level up at all except at pre-defined plot points. If not for the fact they were forced in your way with no way around you really have no point to fighting at all. To improve the RPG part game I'd suggest the dev not try to fine tune the balance with a vice grip. Games are supposed to be fun and when you have such a vice grip on the balance you end up with a game that is what we called in the 90s guide-dang-its. As in, can you read the dev's mind or find a guide to get past this? But to summarize, if you go into it as a VN and play on the easiest difficulty you may have some fun with it, if you can put up with the stupidly slow text speed. Play on other difficulties only if you like beating your head against the wall though. And if you want a good RPG, go elsewhere.
A tense but thoughtful game, melding the best of both Western and Eastern RPG's. Tons of lore, characters, and personalities, so much so that this just has to be the beginning of a multi-game franchise. Plenty of quote-worthy moments that I won't spoil in the review. A bit of patience is needed to get through the dialogue, but with that patience you are rewarded with solid writing, and you'll find yourself caring about the characters in the game. The segments are intertwined with well placed battles, all with a sense of meaning to what's happening in the game. No fluff, no filler...a refreshing change to a lot of titles that add tons of battles just to increase marketable playtime. If you're looking to get in to an all new fantasy world, you could do much worse then sending $8.99 to TD Games for "Trials of Guinevere". For fans of the Eastern classics (Lufia, Breath of FIre, FF, etc.) with a slight European/exotic fantasy twist.
