Super Giant studio - Bastion.
I first dipped into Transistor back in 2014 shortly after launch, got a taste of the opening districts and combat, then life got in the way and I shelved it. Came back in April 2024 and finally finished the story in one focused run. What a beautiful game. The world of Cloudbank is absolutely mesmerizing—gorgeous hand-painted art, an incredible synth soundtrack by Darren Korb that perfectly matches the melancholy sci-fi vibe, and a narrative that feels intimate and mysterious. Red’s journey (and the Transistor itself) pulls you in with its quiet storytelling through terminals, functions, and the haunting voice work. It’s short but packs a punch; the main story felt just right in length. Combat is the real star: a clever hybrid of real-time action and turn-based planning via the Turn() mechanic. It starts simple but quickly opens up as you unlock and combine Functions (abilities) in creative ways. I loved experimenting with different builds, stacking passives, and pushing my user level higher. I cleared the story, hit User Level 8+, Sandbox/Test progress, and a few other bits, but there’s clearly more depth for a full completionist run (NG+ recursion, all tests, max limiters, etc.). The risk/reward with Limiters is brilliant too—making fights harder for better rewards and faster progression. It’s not perfect (occasional pacing dips and the story can feel a bit opaque), but the atmosphere, music, art direction, and satisfying combat loop more than make up for it. Supergiant Games knocked it out of the park again after Bastion. If you like stylish action-RPGs with strong aesthetics and thoughtful mechanics, definitely pick this up. I’m glad I finally came back to finish it. Now excuse me while I go listen to the soundtrack on repeat.
Even after 12 years, Transistor doesn't feel like an old game. The combat system was ahead of its time, still looks fresh and agile. A great example of a small, short game that can provide the highest quality in all directions: story, gameplay, level design, and sound. If you want to remove FPS lock: use /nofixedstep parameter in the Steam launch properties. If you want to use an unsupported resolution (1440p, etc): use -x 2560 -y 1440 parameters in the Steam launch properties.
Brilliant.. amazing story and music. Perfect for a smoke up and play!
I am so very confused why do people praise this game. It's mediocre at best. Uninspired, as in "there was no brilliant idea that the dev team had behind any part of this game, they made something just to make something". An empty shell of a mid execution quality. Visual style is good, not outstanding, just good. But this by itself is not enough to make a proper video game, if you're in just for the visuals — might as well go watch an animation or something. Gameplay is... I don't know, it's just there. Pretty dull. Build creation process is the best part, it looks really promising and exciting, until you get to use it in battle, which are all very monotonous, very clunky, have weird pacing, something crucial just lacks there to make it work. Story has nothing new to tell you, it's a mix of cyberpunk-ish cliches awkwardly put together with no intrigue, no catchy narrative or a meaningful message. It's empty, desperately trying to mask its emptiness with a fragmentary storytelling. Music. I see a lot of praise to the sound design of Transistor in particular. And I had to go and watch a letsplay on youtube to make sure my sound is not bugged, and unfortunately it's not. The music here is super primitive, made on the fly just to have something generic playing in the background, and most of the time instead of music you're hearing that repetitive character humming during the turn planning anyway. The narrator. Boy oh boy. I had to turn off the voice overs just because of this annoying, never shutting up piece of tech junk that's constantly yapping in this cringy husky voice with even more cringy sentence fragmentation style, and read subtitles till the end of the game. How could no one tell that narrator is such a failure during the production of the game, to scrape it before it's too late, is a mystery to me. My verdict is 5/10.
Conclusion
Gorgeous game, great music, combat system that actually makes you think, what's not to love? You play as Red, a singer who can't sing anymore but somehow ends up with a giant talking sword. Normal Tuesday stuff. The art direction is stunning, and Darren Korb's soundtrack will live in your for weeks. The combat takes a minute to click, but once it does, you'll feel like an absolute genius every time a plan comes together. Story's a bit cryptic, not gonna lie, you'll finish it and spend 20 minutes staring at the ceiling piecing things together. [8.5/10]
