"Shadows don't just lift. you either burn them away, or you learn to live in the dark." You know the drill, a turn-based tactical rpg set in a cyberpunk-fantasy world, combat is fun and challenging enough but where the game truly shines is in its story and main team of characters. The game has enough at stake to keep it interesting, the mystery and the feeling of constantly being on the run make you want to play the next mission straight away, and the setting of a futuristic, anarchist Berlin is incredible, truly the highest point in the series. Does it have its flaws? Yes, the loot isn’t particularly varied and the hacking is a bit of a pain, but honestly, that doesn’t detract from what is a fantastic adventure in the world of Shadowrun.
In my opinion, Dragonfall is better in every aspect than Shadowrun Returns. It features significantly more side content and several fully fleshed-out companions with interesting backgrounds. This is easily the biggest upgrade from the first game, where you mostly hired generic NPCs whom you couldn't really interact with. Once again, the writing is great, and I loved the plot. It keeps you guessing, and only in the final hours do you learn what is actually going on. While the graphics, combat, and gameplay mechanics remain the same, they still work well. The turn-based combat is highly reminiscent of the XCOM games, where your team and enemies take turns spending action points on movement, skills, or items. Just don't expect voice acting, sophisticated cutscenes, or flashy production values. This is clearly a game made on a smaller budget. It is a very text-heavy game, so you will need to do a lot of reading to follow the plot. Fortunately, the writing is excellent. As a CRPG fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this game and will definitely be continuing the trilogy soon with the third installment, Shadowrun: Hong Kong.
(Ignore my playtime, already finished it before) ✅ Fantastic cyberpunk‑fantasy setting with great atmosphere ✅ Story is top‑tier — one of the best in the entire CRPG genre ✅ Companions are memorable and have meaningful side missions ✅ Turn‑based combat is satisfying with lots of tactical depth ✅ Choices actually matter and lead to different outcomes ✅ Director’s Cut adds improvements like new missions, UI upgrades, and better balance ✅ Great soundtrack that fits the tone perfectly ✅ Much longer than first game ❌ UI still feels clunky despite improvements ❌ No voice acting — lots of reading ❌ Difficulty spikes depending on your build
(MKVI/BLOODLINE/INTO THE DARK)让人乏味。
If you're hesitant because you tried Returns and felt that it seemed a little shallow, or perhaps like a tech demo, this one is the real deal. It's so good! Many of the missions have different solutions depending on which attributes you've invested in, and you have a team of runners with personalities (who join you on missions for free) instead of having to put a team of blank slates together. It shows off many parts of the shadowrun setting. And the story is great too!
A solid continuation to the first game. Story was longer and a bit more cohesive, and overall definitely corrected some mistakes from the design of the first game. A couple of new minor bugs, but nothing that can't be worked around with minimal effort. If you liked Shadowrun Returns, you'll definitely like Dragonfall.
Can't get over how ugly the character designs are. 'Uglier than reality' is an achievement.
My favourite of the Shadowrun trilogy, all 3 are pretty good, worthwhile cRPGs. Recommended If you are into the Shadowrun/Cyberpunk setting. A lot of reading and fun tactical combat. Dragonfall for the characters, story. Hong Kong was a breeze, cool missions. Returns was short but sweet.
Dragonfall is my favorite Shadowrun title. It feels more polished than Shadowrun Returns and more fun than Hong Kong. Personally, I think the choices you make feel more impactful and you have more of them to make. I'm having more fun playing this game than I did the others. It's kind of like Baldurs gate lite with full fleshed dialogue that you kinda have to be in the mood for to read. Combat is a bit tedious at times but what I find pushes this title forward for me in terms of enjoyment is the hand drawn looking textures, fun (yet tedious) combat + progression and an atmosphere that bleeds Cyberpunk. 8/10
