Boring. Great art direction etc but just so boring to play.
Great little game as one might expect from Supergiant, but a weak follow up to Bastion. It's shorter, not as visually appealing (although still very pretty), gameplay is not as dynamic, story is similar yet not as engaging. Definitely worth playing, but if you liked this, you will love Bastion.
i won't say that this game is devoid of flaws. the bulk of the story has to be uncovered manually in function descriptions, which isn't the most immediately intuitive way to go about it. there are questions that go unanswered - partly, I suppose, because we see the world from the very limited perspective of a guy in a sword who simultaneously has lived in this world all his life and knows very little about the underlying machinations of the antagonists. it would make no narrative sense either for him to explain in depth how cloudbank works, or for him to divulge the motivations of the camerata. the game relies heavily on implication to convey lore, which it does well but which I understand can be frustrating to those wanting clear answers. that said, this game has fully burrowed its way into my brain. everything from the atmosphere to the dynamic of the two protagonists to the somber, haunting 'we are alone at the end of the world' feeling of this game presses on all the right buttons in my cerebrum. my feeling is you will either love this game or find it meh, depending on your particular brain chemistry. for me, i'm so glad i picked it up and I recommend that everyone at least try glancing at a playthrough, just to see if it's something that might appeal to you. the music is gorgeous, and i've been looping first 'paper boats' and then 'in circles' for a couple of days. 10/10 game I love doomed romance.
One of my favorite games of all time. A stylish cyber-noire action RPG starring Red (a mute singer) and the Transistor (a talking sword) going after the wealthy, arrogant bastards that upended their lives in their efforts to take over the city of Cloudbank. What’s not to love about that? Music: Gorgeous post-rock with some real bangers from Cloudbank’s favorite singer, Red, her voice actor, Ashley Barret, and her composer, Darren Korb. Graphics: Futuristic Art Deco. Perfectly fits the singular vibe of the city of Cloudbank, of Red, and her friends and enemies. Sound and Voice Acting: Lovely and truly moving. Logan Cunningham voices Red’s stoic sidekick, the Transistor, and the Camerata are a gallery of villains you’ll love to hate from the first time you hear their voices. Writing: Please make your selections in a world where every detail of the city, down to the color of the sky, is decided by popular vote. Cloudbank is a wondrous and special place, but when everything changes, nothing changes. Transistor paints a lot of its world with the most subtle strokes, and the writing is key to making that happen. Systems: If you like Hades or Bastion, you’ll probably love this. Every single ability in the game can be loaded in multiple ways for maximum flexibility. Every ability can be an active button you press to do something, an add-on feature that remixes and makes another ability much better, or a passive ability that does something automatic to make everything Red does better. The number of combinations possible and the degree of customizations are… a bit insane, actually. Gameplay: Transistor plays with a nice mix of action and turn-based combat, as you plan out your moves and try to stay alive as a dangerous new foe, the Process, advances on Cloudbank. You’ll have a lot of abilities, and you’ll need them all. Transistor has so much going on. It was an incredibly ambitious project for Supergiant to take on after Bastion, and it iterates on and refines Bastion’s strengths in just about every possible way while also forging a unique world and story that has haunted me ever since I played it. It’s a classic. I still prefer it to Hades. Please play it before we all become…
