It is the year 2014 in the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo, Japan. Though previously banned at the close of World War II, the practice of the onmyoji—masters of spirits and divination—has been approved once again in order to combat the ongoing supernatural threat.

"Мда... листок бумаги меня ещё не eбaл."
The 55 hours was because I mostly left the game AFK. I've only been on the second chapter of Kamiosaki's route. This game had beautiful graphics for a game that's supposedly released in 2014, interesting protagonist (I personally like Tengenjibashi and his sarcasm), and amazing seiyuu lineup. It even has a unique system where the work that the reader decided for Tengenjibashi will affect his relationship with the love interests. I absolutely adore the statements that were given by the LIs that act as a hint on which LIs that are going to be affected if Tengenjibashi would have taken the job that were chosen. I'm even amazed at how branched out each choices were, leading to different outcomes/scenes that are quite long by standard compared to other visual novel's scene differences when picking on different choices. But the story is just too dragged out for me. I find myself trying to be immersed to the story's lore, but most of the time couldn't. So despite everything I like about this VN, I don't think I would recommend them to my friends to read it.
Wow. What a trip. On one hand it looks like this is all going to be just the MC working as an Onmyoji and kicking supernatural but, some BL and lewds involved and yet... It turned out to be much more than that. I would also say that this could be considered "Dark" in certain areas... Especially if you give it enough though. Alright well. While you might start out confused/unused to everything, it will eventually all start to make sense. I will warn people ahead of time, that this game does contain a certain "dark" theme:
rape
and if you can't handle it... You can avoid it by just not getting a bad end. (Although I will also have to point out that some of these bad ends provide more information into the psyche of the character and adds to the story, so eh...) It also feels like this game was split into two "light" Love Interests and two "Dark". More like one fluffy, one childhood one, one dark and one overly psychotic. Also: if you do Basara's route... His route is THE SHORTEST!! All other Love Interests have incredibly, far longer story than Basara's. But if you want something cute I suppose... I only read Basara's and Suguru's. Why? Because once I get into the route of the childhood friend troupe... Every other Love Interest falls away for me. I knew I should've saved him for last and yet... He was so fluffy! Despite me reading only two and being familiar with *some* of what the other two LI are capable of... The story isn't all nice and kind. I already told you that. It had underlying dark themes and even Suguru, who appears to be kindhearted... Isn't like that fully at all. That much is obvious... No human can only be "good". For now, I will leave it here. I have to move past my attachment for "I loved you for so long", before I can actually try a different route. Therefore... The mystery continues... Ooooh~! (But yeah, interesting read. Enjoyed the portions I have went through and the lewd scenes were hot. Not into
guys crossdressing
and yet that didn't detract from it. Will definitely need to come back to this in the future. :D)
This was super fun to play, I will say though that after playing through all of it that I feel like there are some bits missing and that just makes it feel a bit incomplete? Like some routes feel more or less fully fleshed out but others feel sorta rushed and unfinished, I don't think this should stop anyone from playing though!
Have completed this game years ago but only recently discovered it on steam (hence the short hours shown). Leaving a review because this is one of my favourite BL games ever. It has flaws, but the flaws simply cannot stop me from loving the characters and the overall stories it delivered. Flaws: - Art quality is inconsistent and sometimes a little rough around the edges - The first half of the story before it branches can feel a little disjointed to the personal routes afterwards. There is not really a strong, overarching plot or theme for the whole game. It's ultimately a personal drama centred around the MC. (This is, however, also a plus as the game does what it does very well.) (- Can we please make the Chinese translation an official one? It's of really high quality. Maybe I'm biased but English translation just doesn't capture the original vibes that well.) Pros: - The MC is one of the most interesting, likeable, and relatable MC I have ever seen in an AVG. Tengenjibashi - the MC - is in fact my favourite character in this game. He feels real - an adult with his own past and future, issues and solutions, likes and dislikes. The dose of cynicism and sarcasm is superb. - The routes are all fun and well structured. When put together, they quite interestingly flesh out both the ROs and the MC. Unlike in some games where the routes are just about the RO and fixing that person's issues, here we get more of a two people working through things together approach (tho the degree to which this is the case depends somewhat on which route you're on), which is refreshing and engaging.
Rei is much more active in Meguro's route and Kamiosaki's than in Yotsuya's, for example. Though it kind of makes sense given the characters and what they inspire in Rei. My read of the structure of the routes is that Kamiosaki's route is about the past (a shared past) and a reconciliation with it. Meguro's is an embrace of and the advance into a shared future. Whereas Rei's story with Yotsuya's is more one of an eternal present, everlasting as the life of ayakashis, atemporal as sunlight viewed through the refraction of water.
- Voice acting is fantastic.
I was surprised at how much effort was placed into this otome lol, I usually play those expensive otomes on the switch(my fav being cafe enchante). This otome was done very well and so well that it can contend with more expensive otomes and probably beat some while at it. This one was very unique, they literally placed animations in the drawings which was amazing, it's also fully voiced. This game is very similar to the collar x malice game due to the crazy amounts of bad ends. For the price and how great the game is, I rate this as a 9 out of 10 (I prefer the otomes to make more happy ends), if you don't mind a little bit of horror, bl, and some smut then I totally recommend this game!
~Starting my review with info on Linux + Proton compatibility since I can't seem to be able to update ProtonDB: Manjaro user here, I could play the game w/ Proton by turning off effects BUT there was still a part that made my game crash (it's some effect on Maguro's route that doesn't get turned off somehow): I avoided it by sending my save files to a Win PC, playing that short part on it, saving and sending the save files back. There was no other issue.~ Good and entertaining game. When it comes to my BLVNs, I'd rather read darker stuff and more introspective plots so Tokyo Onmyoji didn't end up being one of my absolute faves, but it's nonetheless a well-made game and I enjoyed it. If you're searching for something that is not so gut wrenching but still not shallow, with solid characterisation and a nice plot, this game is for you. I won't go into details of how routes work since that's already covered by many reviews and I'll just jump into pro/cons. What I liked best was: -MC, funny and relatable guy, quite a realistic character one can sympathise with. -The omyouji cases in the common part were interesting and not too long nor short. -All couple dynamics are good and they all make valid ships imo. -I love Yotsuya's VA lol. What I liked least: -There's a whole lot of game over ends... like, A LOT. It just gets annoying at some point. -In my opinion, the main "case" of Yotsuya's route was
poorly written. Pity because I really liked the ship (it has that going for it at least) but plot-wise, all characters were sipping dumb ♥♥♥♥♥ juice all the time, so going through the route was quite a chore.
. Still, a solid game I'd recommend. Moonchime did a great job with localising, I hope they'll bring us more BLVNs.
