Opening/ Information
Reading a review is not enough? Want to see some footage? Check the link and watch some game footage for yourself and decide if this game is worth your time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgpulChYVnw Tiny Space Academy is a Space game where you have to build up and start your rocket into the space, it is similar to Kerbal Space program with some nice twists and a cartoon artwork This is the first game created by Full Orbit Games LLC who is entering the world of Steam with a rough but funny Space game.
Gameplay / Story
The Moon landing was fake until now! Tiny Space Academy starts really rough, the tutorial is slow and the game itself has some typical issues games had in the 90s. The game itself is straight forward, you build up a rocket or satellite. Shoot it to the orbit and then try to get it stabilized in orbit. Now you can grind research points and in case you have a pilot you also need to get him back safe. The overall building is fun, the controls are precise and the gameplay is excellent. As far as I can see you can already get to Mars with a rover or get to the moon and take some asteroid samples. But I faced a few issues making the game hard to play for myself. Missing menu options to save manually and get back to the main menu. You have to play the mission or die trying, no saving and money in this game is always an issue due to no way to earn it besides of accomplishing missions. Then again it was fun building a satellite and using solar panels to get some research is fun, getting your space cowboy outside and try to get some items is also fun, but the game in total feels a bit to grindy and an overall 60-minute voyage can be completely ruined by a simple mistake and without the option to save, you have to start from before the launch of the rocket.
Pro
+ a lot of items to research and build + physics are great and its fun to experiment with orbital routs. + the artwork is cute and adorable + you can have permanent satellites in the orbit and also multiple astronauts with rockets in them to do rescue missions or other tasks
Contra
- tutorial is nice but does not explain everything - no way to farm some cash to build bigger rockets and experiment stuff - you have to do the mission, no free roam - one mistake can ruin a lot of planing - mission objective is unclear in later missions
Conclusion/ Who will enjoy the game?
Tiny Space Academy offers an addictive game with a lot of different items and a nice solar system to experiment on. Even due to the issues it has, the game is still enjoyable and its fun is made due to the way you play. To bad the game forces you to do its bidding right in the face without having any other option then play exactly how the developer intended you have to play the game. This is not bad at all but "Kerbal" games like this live far more for the free roam and building your own bases. So who will enjoy this game? Do you like the Kerbal game? Something more casual and therefore more relaxing than the harder Space program games? Do you like a more cartoonish art style? Well then this game is for you. 10/10 - After 41 hours, a little story - It was my first attempt at a crewed landing on Mars, of course I'd made mistakes. So, the lander arrived with too little fuel to survive the descent. But also, I found I'd mis-connected the faring triggers, so the ship couldn't re-configure to land properly anyway. It looked like the trip was a bust. But, just as I was about to scrub, I noticed the ship's trajectory skimmed the outer Martian atmosphere before the ship went flying into the deep black forever. So my brave, doomed crew figured what-the-heck might as well test if the broken faring blocks the parachute deployment BEFORE WE ALL DIE. This is how I discovered exo-atmospheric braking is better than excess fuel when de-orbiting. Not in the mission plan, not something I even knew was in the game when I planned the mission. Honestly, something I'd completely forgotten ever hearing about. But, after a few braking passes, two of the crew even survived the crash landing. Now I just have to figure out how get them back to Earth. The game is a real gem. Figuring out orbital rendezvous and docking is very tricky, but if you like this sort of thing, buy it NOW.
Very interested in games like this! Just want to flag a few deal-breakers for me which may be common. - Orbits appear to be bound to the Earth's rotation. Your ship'slow and high point will be geostationary, rotating your ship's trajectory with the planet. It doesn't make any sense and I find it very disorienting. I may be mis-reading what's going on but I can't interpret it any other way! - If you fail a mission in campaign mode, you can only reset to launch pad. There's no consequence for a mission failure such as rocket or astronaut cost as far as I can tell. - Reordering rocket staging is a nightmare. The UI makes it very hard to do this, anything beyond a basic rocket I don't want to imagine the frustration. I'll be refunding based on these points, and might pick the game up if I see them fixed. Either way, best of luck to the team I love to see more space sims aiming to be accessible! EDIT: Just seen the roadmap for 2021, I definitely feel like this game should be marked as Early Access!
This game is absolutley Great The Science Mode is fun and sandbox is too! this game is TIny but thats what the name says The developer is activley Working on the game and is doing a great job This game doesnt get enough attention If you think about buying its Worth the Money
TL;DR This is a great game if you want to play rocketship maker in a small compact universe, but you'll need more than an i3 8th Generation Intel CPU to run it now that planets orbit. __________________________________________________________________________________ If you're looking for a fairly easy to understand and quick to learn rocket building and launch game, Tiny Space Academy fits the bill. It has a nice colourful and cheerful looking interface that doesn't require a higher end machine to run. The solar system is fairly small (hence the term tiny in the title) so getting to space is going to be a few seconds as opposed to a couple of minutes in other rocket launch games like Simple Rockets 2 or Kerbal. It's also in a 2D plane universe so space travel mechanics doesn't require as much comprehension. I recommend you buy this game for both the long-term play time and the low price, but it comes with a warning: when I purchased this game, the planets were stationary, and it could run like butter on my 8th Gen i3 Intel chip with an integrated UHD graphics laptop. Now that the planets orbit, and these celestial motions are happening in a small universe, my laptop can barely run it at all because a lot more math crunching is required from the CPU. It stutters and the game speed slows down and speeds up without warning, which is something you do not need to have happen while trying to engage a stage step or cant your rocket's direction. The current specifications are a little misleading and I've reached out to the dev to put a more precise minimum floor for the systems specs. If you have anything less powerful than say an i5 9th Gen, you're going to experience the same speed and stutter and you won't enjoy it as much.
I believe this game has a lot of potential! The game is as the title says, very tiny in scale and very simplified. There are many parts available, including research, solar panels, astronauts, you name it, the essentials are there! The UI is nice and smooth as well. Right now the planets remain stationary, and are not orbiting the sun. Once the planets get the ability to orbit the sun, Hohmann transfers would be possible! Once that, and some issues regarding trajectories after leaving SOI have been fixed , I'd be more than happy to recommend this to hardcore space enthusiasts who also play Spaceflight simulator on mobile. Overall the game is good and as I said, the game has potential. I am looking forward to see the game progress and grow! Good luck with further development!
Physics are awful, parts can't be attached properly. Just play KSP it's more complex, but way better and more importantly, its actually playable.
Great game! If you like Kerbal or Simple Rockets this is another one to add to your collection. Game still needs some features added in my opinion but im sure we will see that in the near future. 8/10
Do you want to play KSP but have a potato for a computer? If so this game is for you. Apart from that I have nothing good to say. I realize this game is still actively being worked on, but the dev still has a lot of work to do. Even SIMPLE ROCKETS makes more sense and plays better than this.
