This game is extremely close to being great, but there's a lot of things holding it back from being more than a solid 5/10. For starters, the regular base building, map clearing, and economy managing are fine. Not great, but fine. Satisfying in their execution and logical in their progression. Some of the units and upgrades feel like they lack purpose and it starts to feel like you're following the same basic steps for every mission, but there's decent map and scenario variety to back it up and the tech tree upgrades feel worth it. The story is nothing to write home about. It's fairly light and slightly awkwardly written. Speaking of awkward, the voice acting ranges from "good" to "they went with the first take, didn't they?" It's endearing in a hammy sort of way, but not something to buy the game for. The absolute worst part of this game, by far, are the hero missions. Each and every one is a long, unforgiving slog. You're dropped into an oftentimes campaign sized map with a single unit, thousands of zombies about, and a mission to scour the entire place for research points which you NEED TO GET in order to unlock tech to use in the main game mode. Worse still is that the objects you need to find are randomly placed, painted into the background, and only occasionally flash to show you they can be interacted with. This means spending ten to twenty minutes agonizingly kiting dozens of zombies with what is effectively a slightly more powerful basic soldier unit, pixel hunting for research points, and only occasionally being given some respite when the game decides to throw you a few basic unit squaddies mid mission. It's the worst and most poorly thought out part of the campaign mode, and I would understand if it completely turns some people off to the game.
Don't normally leave a review but here we go. Couple things, first off depending on the difficulty you select it can be quite brutal but the more you learn and strategize the better you get. The replay-ability of the game is for sure appealing due to the fact the maps are randomly generated (if you play survival mode). If you like tower defense resource managements you'll like this game. I have nearly 1k hours and find myself still coming back to the game just to get a taste of gameplay. The campaign is very fun imo too because it gives you goals to work towards. I wish there was a second version of the game because I absolutely love this gem of a game. But like I previously said the game can be quite unforgiving at time and kick your ass so just take it with a grain of salt and get your butt back in there and start again and build your city up against the undead threat! :P
Just don't waste your money like I did
