Great little atmospheric horror game with a very engrossing story, excellent sound design and nice artwork.
It's officially been 6 months since I finished this. I still think about it regularly. It's really that memorable. legitimate 10/10 game. (Don't read too much about the game, just play it blind, it's great.) Also I made a lil curator page! All opinions are of games I've personally bought: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45733614/
It's been a long time since I've written a review, but this game hit me in a way that made me want to say something about it. There Swings a Skull: Grim Tidings is a very small, strange story about an old couple living in a town on the brink of apocalypse. There are aspects of horror, romance, and depression that feel very realistic and well-written. Both characters hide things from each other and from themselves, despite being seconds away from a gruesome death at any given moment. There's a surprising amount of emotion in the writing. I like the art style, however it's hard to truly hide the old RPG Maker skeleton underneath the game as a whole. Movement is slow, 4-directional. The soundtrack is fantastic (I am listening to it now as I write this) and ranges from calm and slow to visceral, Silent Hill-esque grinding gears and static. There are multiple endings, but I haven't explored enough to see them all yet. I am pleased with the ending I got. One twist after another made my heart drop. You really feel for these characters after such a short time with them. More of a list of thoughts than a review, but I really did enjoy this game. Thank you for making it.
This game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ broke me. Devs, I want my life back. Genuinely such a beautifully crafted narrative, with so many bittersweet moments that will forever stick with me. Went into this expecting an excellent game, ended up getting a gorgeous and heartfelt experience. 10/10, There Swings a Skull has my heart.
Beautiful.
Absolutely haunting
Loved it. Great art style and atmosphere.
Short little hidden gem of an existential horror game. Love in the time of climate crisis.
Played it after An Outcry. It's shorter, but more surreal if possible. It works well on Steam Deck. No issues whatsoever.
What a painfully beautiful story that feels consoling in current times. I did a few playthroughs for both perspectives and to try other choices and I enjoyed the dialogue so much. I highly recommend its short and sweet!
