Another case of the bloody Lilly Series; this one had the map feature, i did like travelling to other locations. The true ending seems a bit nice and unexpected also. Short and sweet game about Lily and her friend Sally. Sally goes missing and Lilly is on a mission with fellow ghosteaters to find her. In this 2 hour game you would collect various clues, secrets about a mysterious entity but when you progress through the story you would find out is it actually him? It's a story of love, friendship, paranormal and mystery that is interesting and can make you take a good detour if you are bored. Game has a CG section with 20 pictures, 4 endings and 5 or 4 achievements. Music is ok and characterization is great, especially Jade's. Loved the placement of other game ads as easter eggs/clues. Would have loved if I could interact more with the objects, maybe a puzzle or two to do.
So lets start with a bit of background. This series, physical exorcism, is something i grabbed on a whim. It looked neat and i figured i would forget it quickly, but honestly i was pretty wrong. The first game is a bit rough, but theres a clear passion to the series overall and it only improves over time. I tell you this so i can endorse not only this game but all of them in a few points first. Each game has solid character interactions, especially between the 2 "leads" (i use quotes since the actual main character changes game to game) Jade and Brucie. There is a strong sense of connectivity between titles, they all connect very well and in satisfying ways while telling their own (relatively) contained stories (mostly). Most of all though, the developers clearly care about improving and providing quality experiences with exception to the first game which has some glaring issues they consistently keep themselves as cohesive interesting stories with attempts at gameplay in places. Most of all, the developers are proactive in asking for feedback after releasing, which speaks to their care for the games they are making. That aside, just looking at this one, we have a well constructed story that builds on the lore of the prior entries and continues to take advantage of the series ability to set up and pay off, though this game sets up perhaps a touch too blatantly for future titles at times. Character writing this time was probably my favourite across the series, Lily was a bit dry at times but they managed to develop her quite well and characterize her consistently so that she feels natural, though again, Brucie is the highlight of the show for me. Gameplay wise there isnt much here, just some walking and talking, which works for what they were doing, no need to force gameplay where it isnt needed, though i quite liked case 2's dice combat and want to see more of it. Visually and musically the game sits at a "nice" not much standing out but nothing ever feels bad. I like the 2.5d camera, not something you see much after hd2d hit the scene. The main critique i hold towards this game is both a strength and weakness honestly. While recognizing thematic and narrative parallels is fun, and using them to make accurate predictions is even moreso, this game definitely stands on its own the least, which isnt a problem perse, but a drawback to recommending it, as a follower of falcom's trails series, i know all too well how excessive continuity can cripple recommending a game. That said, if you cant already tell, my final thoughts are that you should buy this game, and all the others if you havent. I'll be trying the other series, peacemaker, this developer has made soon in full confidence it'll be good considering this series.
Horror mystery + intriguing story + interactive = Adventure to find your missing friend Sally. Gather clues by investigating objects and NPCs. Cute art with 3 different endings. Controller friendly.
Reverse Red Herring
From the trailers, you're probably expecting that Marty or Hans's ghost are going to be the main bad guys responsible for the murders. Hell, Hans would seem to have the biggest motive since Case 0
hinted that he may secretly be more sinister than he looks.
However, the real answer turned out to be
a different evil spirit. At this point, you'd think Marty was in the clear, but then it turns out that he was committing murders of his own and that the enemy in the first bad end actually had several traits that indicated they were human. It was quite a clever twist, though I wonder how he's going to continue fooling Sally in future games. Maybe she'll turn against him, or maybe her new zombie body will eventually corrupt her mind to the point where she won't care that Marty killed Lily for her sake. I guess you could say that he's a twist on how an unconfident person develops into becoming more confident and decisive, since he's now extremely determined to get a happy ending with Sally at the expense of everyone else.
As for Lily, it's sad
that she dies in the true ending of her debut game after going through so many trials with the Ghosteaters. She gets to live in the normal ending and it does give her the opportunity to find some kind of meaning as an exorcist, but it also means Marty's journey ends abruptly, so that ending would be unsatisfactory in a different way. It sounds evil of me, but I'm personally hoping that Lily succeeds in her evil spirit revenge arc contrary to Marty's expectations, or at least finds a way to avoid getting exorcised like a throwaway villain.
I also like how the game expanded on Jade's characterization, since she normally seems to be just a manipulative sadist, but
it turns out she can hear the voices of the elder gods and she learned they could potentially end the univese any time they want, which probably caused her to decide to join the winning side. This ties together Marty/Nya's arc with Brucie/Jade's arc to show that they are much more connected than most people originally thought. In hindsight, I really should have seen this twist coming due to how similar Jade and Nya's motivations are. Though I wonder if Jade truly enjoys what she's doing or if she's trying to appease the elder gods so that they spare the universe. That will be a question for another game.
I'm pretty sure I saw a few screenshots of combat on the dev's twitter, but those were cut during development, likely because there are actually very few major battles in this game. As a result, this game is entirely just talking and activating events, with all battles happening in cutscenes. Personally, I would have liked to see how everyone uses their different fighting styles in a battle system, especially Lily who relies on money. To be fair, some of those battle cutscenes are pretty epic, especially when Jade uses her own period against the ghosts in the final battle.
Verdict
9/10 I like that it ties up loose ends from the prequel Cannibal Boy game and how it makes Jade a more interesting character with her connection to
Nya
. I just hope the next games can give more spotlight to Lily
and hopefully make her a great antagonist, now that she's stuck in the evil spirit role.
The game is okay, however it is not worth 6€. This game is part of the physical exorcism series and you NEED to have either watched or played the other games to enjoy this game and if you didn't, don't consider buying this game. It's probably enough to only play "Extra case my girlfriends secret", but I'd still recommend playing or watching the rest. This game's only focus is the story which isn't a bad thing, if the story wasn't mediocre. Sadly while the story has alot of great moments, it failed to meet my expectations which I believe a game like this should be able to exceed. I will start with the positives because like I said the story isn't bad. Jade is at her peak in this game. She plays a bigger role than ever and her terrifying side shines through. The endings of this game are also pretty great. You see a side of each character most fans of this series love to see including me. The lore of the antagonist is pretty interesting. There is great foreshadowing all over the game, like dialogue that seems irrelevant, often turns out to be foreshadowing, which is important for a game like this where you have to solve a mystery. The mystery also has a great conclusion with a great twist which arguably kinda makes the game worse, which I won't get into cause spoilers. This game also maintains the comedy this series is known for. This pro isn't really for the story but more so for the game itself, this game allows you to view the log of your previous conversation and to save anytime you want and that's very practical. Now to the negatives. Saying that this game has 3 or 4 endings is being generous. One ending literally leads you to another ending and the earliest ending you can get is if you refuse to investigate which is very anticlimactic. Also the game spoils you what ending you're getting based on the dialogue options you pick, which destroys immersion and is very annoying. In the library they sometimes show real life pictures for no good reason and that also destroys the immersion. I'd argue it would've been better if there was no pictures in the first place. Spoilers for "Case 00 Cannibal boy" and minor spoilers for this game (You can see this spoiler in the demo): But apparently Bruce actually liked Hans? That never made sense to me, this guy didn't grieve when he ate Hans on the contrary he said HANS TASTED GOOD. But in this game he suddenly feels bad for it? I don't believe that, especially when he continues to work with Jade knowing damn well she was the one who led Gretel into killing Hans. I just don't buy Bruce loving Hans. The worst part of this is, is that it's not even that relevant. Spoiler free section: I was very disappointed with this game's villain. At one point I forgot about his existence and I think one of the endings does too. You would think he has some great motives against our MCs, knowing what ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ they are but their motives has nothing to do with our MCs, unless you count revenge, which I think is dumb and that's coming from someone who loves revenge stories. Also Marty and Sally get close to no screen time, which is such a disappointment after their game having such a greatly written ending. "Case 00" and the "Extra Case" were my favorite from this series story wise and this game seemed to be combining both of the good parts of these games but sadly it didn't. The focus was mainly on Lily who isn't a bad character, but is no where near as interesting as any of the other characters. It's a good idea to see this conflict from a normal person perspective, because of how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ the main cast actually is, but I wanted more time with the other characters. The antagonist felt very clickbaity to me and if you know this game's story you'll know why. He only has 2 major scenes and I still feel nothing towards him. Black from "Case 01" was a great "villain", who had a personal motive against one of the character which is revenge, which I think was done really well. Here however it doesn't feel as personal as I wanted it to be. I would recommend this for a lower price like maybe the 3-4€. But 5-6€ is way too much for this game imo. If you're a huge fan of this game, I would buy it but keep your expectations low, except for the endings. However if you're not that big of a fan and aren't sure if this is your type of game, watch a let's play. I hate saying that since I really enjoy supporting indie game developers, but combining the short 2 hour play time and flawed story, I have to say this game isn't worth it's current price tag. I will have to mention though, based on the ending we got the next part looks like it'll be pretty good
A very solid followup to the Physical Exorcism series. Seeing a sweet innocent girl try to reach a happy ending as the horrors of ghosts and even worse people surround her was really great to read. The true ending especially was a heartbreaker. The balance of comedy and seriousness was also quite well executed, it knows when to hop between the two to either lighten the mood or set up something particularly messed up. Also, Normal Ending Lily is best girl, I would die for her.
extremely doomed yuri
