If Steam had anything but a binary system for rating games this would not be a thumbs down but a thumbs sideways. Pros: Aka things I liked about the game. -- Good looking. The graphics are professionally hand drawn though they borrow heavily from classical Japanese fantasy tropes they are really well done. -- Slay the Spire/Faster Than Light path choosing. This is a bit closer to FTL in that you *can* backtrack but you might end up a) running out of resources(food) or you might get caught by the wave of evil chasing you. -- Interesting if odd writing. The story is basically: Evil sorceress/necromancer takes over job of Villain Dad after he buys it and the hero (which ever you play) is chased around the country side trying to catch up to her in time to kill her. There is a bit of mustache twirling mwahahaing in the writing but I take that to be for dramatic effect rather than a parody of old villain tropes. -- You can unlock other characters to play with and layouts to play with (similar -- in fact copied from FTL if I don't miss my bet) While I generally despise the philosophy that players must unlock things in a game, the variety is OK and the unlocks aren't too hard for the most part. (Though I am betting some take forever.) -- Game is true to Japanese folk lore and medieval culture in as much as I as an American can tell. -- Almost 0 dice rolling in combat. Almost all the random is out of combat. And it is usually not heavy handed. (See party wide damage events as the exception, below) Cons: Aka things that bothered me greatly about the game. -- Attrition. There are not enough ways to keep your companions from dying. Even clever tactical play will not prevent them from taking damage over time and eventually some will die which will lead to a cascading failure of your quest to ?Reach the end?. -- There are no good in game tool tips for things which need explanation like: What a Fan does (It increases damage in a radius around the user for 1 turn -- a somewhat negligible use of time in a game where turns matter. And losing one to increase a few character's damage can be deadly. -- Turn limited combat scenarios where you MUST kill all the enemies or die in the time alotted where there are enough high armor/high hit point heavy hitters that if you don't kill them quickly will end your game for you earlier than the turn count. -- Nasty events that deal damage to your whole party out of combat. Potentially killing unhealed members. A healing potion system or a medical kit system to help with health issues (as in FTL AND STS) would be a welcome addition. As it is, this is ridiculous. -- Weather events can also ruin a perfectly well planned tactical encounter. And by events I mean party wide wipes with damage during combat. -- Playing first on Normal and then dropping to Easy did not feel like a change. It felt exactly the same amount of difficult. Not sure why except that the scaling on the higher boards seemed to go off the charts the father I progressed. The early game is Easy on both modes and then quickly falls off. Meh: Things I thought could be better. -- the Bosses are a bit cheesy. This is to be expected based on the pattern of following the design philosophy of FTL. (STS does a great job of making this less painful while remaining challenging. This might be the nature of deck building rather than dealing with a motley crew assortment you can't really change much.) -- Resource constriction is intended to simulate roguelike situations but often feels just like the devs are misers. This requires a great deal of internal balancing and is kind of in the nature of the game so it is a minor negative for me but I can't really expect it to change at all. Many shops had few to no vital resources and the prices were typically very high compared to coins availability at any given moment. Scrolls were a struggle to get until they weren't and became entirely irrelevant because by the time your full party is leveled up completely scrolls start just stockpiling and you can't sell them. Weapon availability and pricing was spotty too though less so. Companions were almost entirely out of reach via purchasing in stores unless you didn't mind just getting the cheapest for ALL of your coin. -- Would like there to be more options at start up to make replayability a thing. As it is after like 8 runs (all failed, one at the final fight that was really a foregone conclusion) it does not seem like a game worth going back to. Final caveat: I was given this game by a friend because it happened to be on my wishlist while I was waiting to see how it progressed in development and I am happy to have played it though I am disgruntled by some of the experience. If you enjoy being frustrated and also love Japanese lore and like tactical game play this might be for you. I recommend buying it on sale for now if at all. As I said up top I would give this a sideways thumb if that was an option. The thumbs down is admittedly an emotional response to losing to factors that felt out of my control (Attrition, nasty events, and bad resource availability)
Short but surprisingly good game at first. Unfortunately it suffers from the usual rogue-like problems and the difficulty levels are completely busted. At easy enemies are push-overs but at normal and hard winning is more RNG than strategy because the game spawns monsters in random encounters that can one-hit most party members. I really wanted to like this game, all the good parts for that are there but it doesn't use then enough. The gam falls short and back into the generic rogue-like trope with excessive RNG and choices that don't really matter because you just pick between two unknown. Disappointing, I liked the idea, the setting...
Simple yet engaging gameplay, lots of variety without going needlessly complex. Turn-based combat with no random factor except for very few instances such as potentially saving ammo and one extremely rare late game enemy. Lots of replayability due to the many weapons, playable leaders and potential allies - all of them easily unlockable. Music might become repetitive but that's pretty much it, the game looks gorgeous. My only regret is not having bought this game sooner - shamefur dispray.
Genre: Mythical Japanese apocalypse simulator. This rouge-lite features a hex map for squad based combat, though if your main character dies, the game ends. I am not an expert on Japanese mythology, but many of the foes (yokai) seem to be drawn from that pantheon / mythology. My favourite foe is the pumpkin person, though the witch riding a frog is pretty awesome, too. This is a turn-based game, with each overland being gorgeous and hand-drawn. The overland map is a series of nodes and routes, and unless you live in a cave, you will likely recognize some of the city names and even some of the island names. A wall of darkness descends upon the left side of the overland map, and will slowly spread to cover the entire island. You race ahead of it, encountering bandits and yokai, plus mystical encounters. The Japanese music with its strange tonal system is a nice sonic touch. I got this as a Humble Bundle game, but would have bought it on sale for ca. 10 CAD.
I really like this game, but I'm really bad at this game. Honestly I'm just bad at strategy and tactics games - but this game is one of the few that I do play occasionally regardless. It's got a great soundtrack, great art style and it's for the most part really clear. If you're into strategy/tactics/whatever genre you call this then I think you'll probably like it. Also if you're into Japanese folklore and history, you'll get quite some enjoyment out of it, it's a period that's not much explored, and it proves to be a really fascinating setting, with lots of things that make me want to go and do further research and reading - don't expect and easy time though! I find that some of the weapons are a little confusing, but once you know what each one does and get used to the icons things start to make sense. My main issue is honestly that 'easy' mode isn't very easy... I've got to the final battle a few times on easy mode, but then always get obliterated. The easy mode increases rewards and makes the battles easier, but the bosses still hit hard. However as you play you unlock things - new loadouts, new weapons, characters to play as, the other units, charms that give you buffs etc. While these in some ways dilute the pool and make it harder to get specific things, they also open up many new avenues. I can't yet say which way I feel it goes, but it certainly adds some depth to the game as you play. The first few runs were pretty narrow in what I could do (I had a lot of runs end very early), but after only 8 hours there's quite a bit more variety. On top of this, the game's been updates since launch so there is now quite a bit more variety out of the box, so to speak.
Great FTL-like game.
I like the combat and the strategy involved. The storyline is dark and there's a lot of cool lore tidbits about each character, if you're into that sort of thing, because it's based on real historical figures. The artwork is taken from historical paintings and documents, too, so even though there's not a lot of animation involved, I still think it looks really cool. And I love the music. All in all, this game is definitely worth a look.
I love this game. It is one of a handful for which I have all the achievements. I kept coming back to it for a few years. Everything is simple and smooth in design while producing complex and interesting gameplay, which is the perfect combination. The animation and sound design are absolutely fantastic. There are multiple difficulty levels and many different leaders with different layouts and styles, so you can make it as hard or easy as you like. The developers are responsive on Discord.
