okay so i actually really loved this game. i recently purchased a rusty lake/cube escape game collection and have been playing them (i think out of order but oh well) and im a new fan!! these games are just... idk. these rusty lake games somehow keep finding new ways to make me feel unsettled while also making me feel way smarter than i actually am LOL some of the puzzles absolutely humbled me (at least personally), but figuring them out made the payoff even better. like even story wise, there were moments where i genuinely was like "oh sh!t??" xD and the way the game blends eerie storytelling with clever mechanics is so satisfying. i love the continuation of certain spooks... ALSO my steam def wont back me up on this but im a bit of a complettionist. i love getting all accomplishments, especially with a somewhat short game like this where it doesnt feel impossible, yk? anyway, one of my favorite touches with *this* game particularly was using real life to unlock "the basement" achievement (i wont spoil anything besides the name) it was such a fun and unexpected idea that made the experience feel like it extended beyond the game itself. like i kind of did it expecting silly stuff, but it was a whole real loophole and i had to honestly google some stuff to keep up (no not proud of that) its creepy, creative, and exactly the kind of weird ive come to expect from cube escape/rusty lake.
I do not recommend this game. While I generally tend to be a fan of point-and-click, puzzle, and plot-driven mystery games, "The White Door" ultimately disappointed. Much of the game consists of simplistic mirroring narration. Your character states that he drinks a sip of coffee and the player is expected to drag the character's arm up to bring the coffee to his lips, then drag it back down to the table. After a few prompts, this gameplay style begins to feel like a chore rather than a privilege. I'd rather have read a comic book. Eventually, I found myself unable to progress further. I wandered around the space to re-examine all the information we had been given repeatedly, unable to find any additional information. With growing frustration, I, for the first time in my gaming experience, broke my "no-walkthroughs" rule. I wanted to understand what I had missed in the game to make progression impossible. And what had I missed? Nothing. This game has an out-of-game ARG element it fails to establish that otherwise bars completion. If I had known I should be hunting down Instagram handles and skimming websites before I started this game, I may have enjoyed it more and felt fulfilled. Instead, I was frustrated to find that had I not looked up a walkthrough, I never would have known to look outside the game. I had fond memories of playing some of Rusty Lake's earlier games, so I was excited to try this game out. I ended up feeling like my time was wasted.
Rusty lake in general: + good visual clues + some morbid themes + good mystery + interconnected story, recurring characters + multiple perspectives + time travel - some of the puzzles (or their solutions) don't make a lot of sense, even in hindsight This game in particular: + unique gameplay, stands out from the others + gloomy atmosphere + great lore and secrets - not as much focus on puzzles
At first the sterile environment kept having me turn it off after a few minutes. After about 8 months of having the game i finallly decided to complete it. Some puzzles i looked up as you do but it had a good variety of puzzles. I completed in in 3 hours so it's short and sweet. Fair play to the devs for mixing it up
