About
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: By purchasing the game, you actually get two games now: 1) The original The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, 2) The Unreal Engine 4 remaster called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux. Please see The Astronauts website for details.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won’t be able to see them.
You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.
Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.
Still, the discoveries won’t happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul’s supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.
Explore and interact with the beautiful yet ominous world of Red Creek Valley, which was created with the use of revolutionary photogrammetry technology that allows for nearly photorealistic environments.
Communicate with the dead and see how they died in order to gather clues that help you piece together the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance -- and the fate of his family.
Experience, in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye, and horror fiction, all of it inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and H. P. Lovecraft.
Conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although there are a few scary bits in the game, players will have no need for sedatives. Our game is less about terror and more about clammy unease.

Reviews
I bought this game impulsively without knowing much about it, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The game mechanics are brilliant, though it took me a while to grasp them fully. The visuals are stunning, thanks to Unreal Engine 5, and the world feels vast and lifelike. The story is a major selling point, with a compelling arc and some unexpected plot twists. While uncovering secrets can be challenging without any hints, the game ensures you don't miss out on any lore before you finish, even if it means retracing your steps a bit. The game is relaxing This game Deserves a high rating; 9.2 Pine cones out of 10 Astronauts
This is a Beautiful Walking Stimulator, as much as i hate walking sim...mostly is because they either are boring or give me headaches. But this one had a nice story background. It's like playing Batman without the combat but with the "Detective Mode" on The environment are Breath taking. I enjoy every moment when i get to stand still and envy the Nature. Feels good, you also get 2 game in this purchase, another one is The Redux version of this game.

TLDR: *NOT A GAME ALARM BLARING* General Thoughts/Overview: Note: I played and completed the Redux version. I'm simply reposting here as it has no individual store page. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (VEC) is a pixel hunting detective walking simulator in which you rely on blind luck to find the vast majority of your clues. We are Paul Prospero, a hard broiled noir detective type with some kind of spiritual superpower. We’ve been brought to the isolated cater family by the son, Ethan, who has also warned us that things in the valley are not what they seem. Sprint around, probably miss things, find short horror stories by Ethan, enjoy the stunning environment, growing discomfort, and creepy dread, and maybe uncover the truth behind Ethan’s vanishing. Pros:

Stunning environment. It’s just so beautiful and put together so well, it makes all the investigation sites feel unique and interesting. It also really hammers home the feeling of isolation, and a poor kid on his own in the middle of nowhere.
A walking simulator that lets you run! I could kiss the developers. No broken leg syndrome. OK, so the map is bigger than Tokyo, but at least you can run.
I enjoyed the over the top voice acting. Everyone seemed to be having fun and embracing their roles and it spills over into the narrative, giving the characters life.
Cons:

The writing is a bit ‘eh’. I thought the twist was interesting but not inspiring. It felt a wee bit handwavey.
Though if we consider most of the writing is meant to be from a preteenish kid, it’s actually pretty good.

SO… MUCH… RUNNING. Good lord. I’m glad we can run, and I appreciate the way the dev’s have stuck to an enlarged area to explore and (in my case literally) get lost in, but seriously… could we not have condensed the map a little?
I love the stripped back no hand holding approach the game has taken. That said, when the things we need are pixel hunt based and scattered around an area roughly half the size of Jupiter… It’s a frustration generator. Luckily I worked out very quickly that the stuff I needed was always located in the rough vicinity of the investigation.
Suggested improvements:

Fast travel. I know we get a version at the end, and I like that, I’d have liked a general fast travel system. OR a more condensed map. I don’t want 2/3 of my playtime to be running between puzzles.
I’d have loved to see an uninvasive aid. Click a button get a sprite giving you a rough direction, either for your next puzzle or for the droid you’re looking for.
Overall Recommendation: Overall I give this the thumbs up. Yes it has its frustrations and imperfections, but overall it’s a narrative driven experience which lives up to its expectations. That said, this game is not for you if you want something tightly written and fast paced. It isn’t for people who get bored fast and easily, and it isn’t for kids, with the odd jump scare and some pretty grim material. If you like walking sims, or you like detective games, you’ll get on with this. If you like both? Well then here you go, have fun.
