The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won’t be able to see them.
You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.
Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.
Still, the discoveries won’t happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul’s supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.

If you buy this, you get the original version and the remastered version with Unreal engine. I played the Redux first, since it performed better, and getting it done first, then finish the original one off, then write this review. This game does not hold any hand at all, you have a semi-open world to tranverse around by yourself, trying to find clues around the world and make connections to solve the mini-mysteries that lead up to one big mystery. Bear in mind, while this is mainly walking simulator, the tag in this game have "Horror" and there is an aspect that is an horror in this game, I'm not a fan of horror games and I braved out the horror aspect of this game, and I felt that it is not necessary at all, because the puzzle in there is tricky already. So for those that are interested in this game, but on the fence with the horror aspect due to health condition or generally just hate horror games, it may be worth for you to go on the internet and do research on what horror aspect it is and see if it's something you can get through yourself or not, before you buy this game. I got this game on the sale, £1 and some changes, for the two versions, the remastered one is absolutely worth the sale price, it is a short game indeed, and I speedran the original version (experienced some lags though, unlike the redux version) just to tick off the achievements and be done with this story. The story is a mystery but very dark as well. But the world map is absolutely beautifully designed and it helped balance out the horror and eerieness of the story. Aside from that one horror aspect, I really enjoyed playing this game, it made me sat down and just, think about the game and the story, and make connections to make it make sense. Lots of names to get through and the relations so there's some brain noggin moments! This game is for you if you: Are OK with horror, likes walking simulator, very patient with finding the clues, making connections, deducting what happened in the scenes, and is OK with the dark story and the gores. It is definitely not an easy walking sim game due to absolutely no hand-holding. I feel that the story is worth it for me, personally.

i got this shortly after it came out. i only recently played it to get the last few achievements. i don't think it holds up well today ESPECIALLY at $20 i can't believe that. but this game has charm, it's detective like gameplay is at least unique. visuals are still great IMO. but i couldn't play the whole thing through again today. and no way is it worth $20 in today's world.
I really liked this game. It's primarily an atmospheric walking simulator with some self-contained stories inside of it, loosely connected to an overarching narrative. I think other reviewers have noted that the larger world does feel quite empty - and it's true that I'd have loved MORE small stories inside the overall world experience to help keep the pace and flow up, and to reward me for poking around in unusual places. This is like a darker Allen Wake style game, with the stories and mysteries. This has such an eerie vibe with a beautiful landscape, it subconsciously more scary in a way. I didn't find a lot happening and yet I jumped at every little thing that did. I didn't even want to step into the darker place just cause I was so creeped out. Good, good game.
