This action-platformer drops players into the role of a martial arts hero navigating five stylish stages inspired by classic wuxia cinema. From ancient castles to misty temples tucked away in the mountains, the game oozes visual flair and atmosphere. Unfortunately, while its world might pull you in at first glance, its gameplay reveals a lack of depth. Let’s start with the controls. You get the usual loadout expected of a side-scrolling action game: move left and right, jump, double jump, dodge roll, and attack. There’s also a block, which you can hold indefinitely without worrying about stamina. Attacking is a one-button affair; you mash it to string together a flashy combo. While the animations change, the damage remains the same, so there’s little reason to care. Still, the developers try to spice things up with a few clever touches. Enemies can be insta-killed with a backstab if you manage to roll behind them, and a well-timed block against an enemy’s glowing “tell” opens them up for a powerful counterattack. The counter can drop most enemies in a single blow, making it the most effective way to dispatch foes quickly. Combat varies slightly across stages thanks to different enemy types. Basic grunts and fragile archers go down in a few hits, but elite units present a real challenge. These tougher enemies block your rolls, forcing you to use the block-and-counter system or risk taking damage. Sadly, there’s lack of balance and missed attacks. Mages, for instance, are not fun because it’s impossible to block their attacks. Then you can get between two enemies you can’t jump over. Or you’ll block an enemy, but won’t activate the quick kill because a second enemy is standing nearby. Stealth kill is also inconsistent, because you might see an icon but your character will perform a basic attack. Thankfully, the game never overwhelms you too much. Even when multiple enemies swarm the screen, your attack hits all targets in front, giving you an edge. Of course, you might simply roll past enemies and escape them with your platforming skills, but the game places doors to prevent you from going down the easy path. Doors require a key that drops from an enemy, but the good news is that this isn’t random and you will always find it on someone near the door. Platforming serves as the connective mechanic between fights but feels clunky and stiff. You’ll climb walls, dodge spike traps, flames, and moving saws, but these moments are more frustrating than thrilling due to slow or unresponsive controls. Precision is thrown out of the window because there’s no air control, and when you add timed platforms and threats that knock you back into a pit, sections can be far too frustrating. Boss fights cap off each stage, and they’re sadly one of the weakest elements. They look cool and bring some variety in terms of faster attacks and occasional special moves, but the same button-mashing tactics that work on regular enemies will carry you through. Each boss has a guard bar that you must break before dealing real damage, but the process is fast and never forces a strategic shift. In the end, they feel like bigger versions of standard enemies that can be cheesed by pushing them into a corner. Fortunately, the game’s generous checkpoint system smooths over its rough edges. Death is never a major setback. Checkpoints are frequent, and defeated enemies don’t respawn. Even bosses don’t restore their health. This forgiving structure ensures even the least skilled players can brute-force their way through to the end. While the game delivers a nice feeling of being in a wuxia movie, it ultimately falls short in the long run. What’s more, you can pick any of the five stages right from the start. There’s no progression system, no unlockables, collectibles, or achievements, and the only reward for beating a stage is a short poem.
Assassin
This is a Chinese ancient-style side-scrolling action assassination game. Its gameplay mainly consists of action combat and platform jumping, which is very interesting to play.
A horizontal platform adventure game featuring an ink wash painting style. The level design is quite interesting, and the feel and impact of the gameplay are satisfactory. It is worth trying.
Just dove into "True Assassin's Creed - China"! Loved its stunning Chinese art and satisfying backstabs. Combat's pure skill, with clean UI. Mobs don't respawn, a relief! Parkour is tough, especially the finicky wall jumps. Controller support is desperately needed. A challenging yet unique experience!
