«The Ploshers»

Crim's Humble Opinion Curator
Well Thought Out Arcade Play
The Ploshers is a pretty neat arcade style game. You will play across 40 different stages. Each stage you need to eliminate five or four different color enemies. You run around shooting enemies changing your color type to match theirs and move up and down You can set the lives for the stage to obtain different color trophies; five being the easiest and one being the hardest. Each stage you are introduced to a new type of enemy. I think it was pretty cool because I didn't notice there is a thing on the menu that explains what all the enemies do and I thought "you know it'd be cool if there was an enemy that changed colors" (there is)...."it'd be cool if there was an enemy that messes with your directions" (there is). Toward the end it gets pretty tough because you have to really pay attention to everything going on. I've put around three hours into the game and have almost beaten all the stages but it really depends on your skill and concentration on how long it will take you to beat. You can also play all the stages in multiplayer mode. I've not tried it though. I do know this game works best with a controller and most specifically if you are used to it an xbox controller. The enemy colors are pretty much the same as the xbox controller color scheme (green, blue, yellow, red) so it works out well to use it.
Minor Annoyances
I honestly have not had too many issues with this title. The music can get a bit repetitive. There are some enemies I wish had a bit more of a warning as to when they are going to do things. Other than that the only other thing I can think of is a minute thing. If you have a bad run and you want to do a quick restart there is no real button for that. You just have to cycle through the lives, get a game over, and select the level again. I personally haven't played many games like this and there is probably an old arcade game exactly or very similar to this. Regardless; I think this is a fun and well worth the look. There is a demo; so you can try it there. If you like what you play consider giving it a go.
More reviews on our Curator Page The Ploshers is a simple but easily addictive arcade game developed and published by PlatyPurpleStudios. The game itself came out as unexpected, especially due to its simplistic looks, but turns out to be a nice surprise. If we’re forever trapped in the early days of arcade machines, The Ploshers would be on all of them, due to its colorful ways and entertaining gameplay. The objective is simple, run across a stair-based level, firing projectiles to destroy enemies, and evading them by either running away from them, or going up and down. While hitting all those colorful baddies, one has to collect hourglasses to expand the timer, and if going up on the Leaderboard is your goal, it’s advised to collect those shiny diamonds. Not to mention, each destroyed target leaves behind a coin, that can be either a bronze, silver or gold one. The most interesting, if not the only alluring fact that originally makes this games to be so appealing, is how we use different colors to hit different enemies. So, if you are color blind, this game becomes unplayable from straight up. Each baddie, has a color, either Yellow, Blue, Red or Green. The only way to damage enemies is by turning your Plosher into the same color as the targeted opponent. It’s very convenient that one needs to change across 4 different colors, the same colors of your xbox-based controller, with A being the Green, Y the Yellow, and so on. The game was actually built based on that pre definition, since you’ll have to keep changing colors in order to hit different enemies all the time. The concept itself is curious and can become very frenetic really soon, which only adds to its amusement. Challenges will eventually become tougher across each of the 40 available stages. New enemies show up with different ways to kill you. Those evil things will come up in pretty much every shape and form, even shooting laser beams out of them. The strategy remains the same, avoiding them by going up or down, assuming there isn’t anything worse in those areas. The structures of the level will change eventually, with portals where you can only traverse by being under a specific color. The further into the stages, bigger the challenge, but if you’re into arcadish games, this might come out as a surprise as well. There is a nice learning curve, and new enemies do not feel overwhelming, not at first. There are three levels of difficulty, that determinate how many times you can die by being hit or touched by those out of space minions. 5 Stars grant you five lives, while 3 Stars grant you three. 1 Star is the hardest difficulty, and grants you only one life, although once dead, players are taken to the Stage Select screen, where previously unlocked stages will remain unlocked. Visually very colorful, each stage changes in its background, with different locations, such as mountains, forests, snowy hills, scary volcanoes, and all sorts of scenery. Hand drawn in a basic style, the backgrounds sometimes may cause some color fusion with the going action. Some color pallets are just better in specific stages, but overall it’s relatively easy to focus on your Plosher. Unfortunately, and with a good gameplay idea, its execution is somehow not well optimized. First, we have the control functionality, that clearly works well, but it’s not possible to bind your own buttons. This is bad because the game uses the D-Pad for movement, and for those used to play with the analog stick, it is an issue. The controls feel somehow stiff, and I personally would appreciate a much more fluid gameplay. The soundtrack is simple, and if one takes the scores really seriously, it’s probably better to run with your favorite soundtrack. Sound effects are simple and work well with the objective. The Ploshers can be played in local Co-Op and in the end delivers a nice and unpredicted surprise. It looks simple, but offers challenge and entertainment that highly resembles the arcade days.
A review copy was provided by the developer.

Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.

Overall Rating - Painfully Bad ★☆☆☆☆

First Impressions
I'm not sure why, but the developers of The Ploshers (TP) reached out to me out of the blue, offering me a copy of the game. Unfortunately, I got distracted, as is my norm, and beat all the stages a year earlier before posting the review. I'll admit there are elements I enjoy and think are good ideas, but it doesn't mesh together well. Between the visuals, gameplay, and even difficulty, it reminds me of an NES game. Too bad it has some of that era's jank to go along with it. Also, some people gave good reviews after beating only two stages, so take their reviews with a grain of salt.
Gameplay
TP plays similarly to NES arcade games, as you'll load up stages that slowly fill up with enemies, and have to destroy five each of all four colors to beat the level. In theory that's only 20 enemies to contend with, but the game spawns enemies randomly, in every sense; which row they spawn in, what enemy it is, and what color it is. This means you might have to kill far more than 20 simply because they're the wrong color. As far as the RNG goes, there might be some limitations to ensure they don't all spawn in the same area constantly, or spam the same enemy repeatedly. However, even if there are, the randomness can create many less than ideal set-ups. Personally, I think the worst offender is when a row gets so clogged of enemies, you can't even thin the row by killing any of them. In some cases, just getting through without dying is almost impossible. I think the game needs re-balancing, and for comparison, look at how Bubble Bobble is set-up. Levels get harder over time by adding new enemies, and combining them in tricky set-ups. However, they're chosen specifically for each arrangement, adding power-ups as necessary to mitigate some of that challenge. They don't just throw the hardest enemies in bulk at you at all times. If I were to change one aspect about TP, I would still allow enemies to spawn in somewhat randomly. The big change I'd make though is limiting the pool from which enemies can be selected from, intentionally combining certain types together for unique challenges. For instance, having a stage with only enemies that change your controls, or mix and match different kinds of projectiles together. This would make stages stand out since they're built around a theme, but still let you adapt and learn how to address these situations. Obviously, the color spawning matter should also be fixed, so you never have to wait indefinitely for the last correct enemy to appear.
Controls
You can use the keyboard to play this game, but I find it's very intuitive with a controller. Centered around the main gimmick, each enemy's color signifies what projectile you have to fire at them, which corresponds to one of the face buttons. For example, on the Xbox 360 controller, the button matches what color enemy it kills: 'A' is green, 'B' is red, 'X' is blue, and 'Y' is yellow. Also, a nice feature is that you don't have to mash the button to shoot quickly, you can just hold it down. This control scheme is quite simple, but it's such a natural extension, I'm surprised I haven't seen it before.
Story
Like a true NES arcade game, there's no story here, though I'm surprised there's not an opening or ending cutscene.
Visuals
I find the visuals to be basic and bland. This wouldn't have looked bad for the NES era, but we're far beyond that point by now. Plus, some of the enemy designs are overly simplistic. A few of them are just geometric shapes with eyes or faces thrown on. For a developer with no other games under their belt, it's not a bad first effort, but this area needs improvement.
Sound Design
There's a few songs that play throughout TP, and they're serviceable. However, at least 1 song that I can think of annoys me. It drones on in a way that's meant to be calm and relaxing, but for whatever reason I find it grating. The warning sound effect that blares when you're running out of time or there's 6 enemies on a row (the 7th will take 1 of your lives) gets your attention, but is also annoying.
Pros
🌟 It's possible to play local coop with a friend, with the game spawning enemies faster to compensate. 🌟 I appreciate not having to mash the button to rapid-fire projectiles.
Cons
❌ Between the timer, enemies all across the screen, projectiles, instant-kill color-coordinated barriers, and enemies that can screw with your controls, there are too many factors to contend with at any time. ❌ I beat the game, but I find the difficulty oppressing, especially since even basic, easy enemies take several shots to kill. ❌ The game is overall much like the title of the game, unappealing.
Tips
🔍 The time limit is as dangerous as enemies, so as soon as you start a level, collect a few timers so you start off at an advantage. With no enemies yet spawned in, this is your best opportunity to get them. 🔍 Clear rows early on before they become impassable barriers, as it only takes a few foes in bad arrangements to be a significant problem. IE, be very aggressive in killing enemies. 🔍 In the late-game, you'll have to pay attention to the entire screen, as enemies can fire at you from all directions.
Final Thoughts
With all the variables you have to address, everything becomes overwhelming, especially as you get into later stages. If it weren't so hectic, I might actually enjoy the gameplay, but it basically becomes headache inducing. Tell me if this sounds like a lot: gather sand timers to extend the time limit, engage in crowd control so rows don't get too clogged up, dodge projectiles that can come from all the way across the screen, and kill the correct enemies based on their color in order to beat the stage. Here's a list of changes I'd make to this release. Instead of being killed if a row has six enemies, why not make that the maximum possible? It's not to your benefit having that many foes in one place anyways. I'd leave the time limit and way to expand it alone, but be more generous with how much time you accrue per timer. Since nobody cares about points, I'd remove the gems and coins, so there's one less object on screen. As TP is now, I don't recommend getting it, as it relives the least enjoyable features of older gaming, instead of the most fun aspects. It has a good idea, but it's not well executed. Mechanic Each screen has a set of platforms. - platforms can be jumped between. - platforms fills with beasties, which you can blast with corresponding-colour pellets. - if any given platform level gets too populated, you die. - pratcially everything in this game kills on-touching - so this game is very unforgiving. Universe Graphically, it is a simple and naive world. The world has about as much coherence as Jet Set Willy and feels like an Atari ST coverdisk. Delivery A quirky style holds a solid platform arcade experience. The levels are tough and progression extremely hard - seemingly like games of old, to prolong shelf-life. No sugar-coating, a decent arcade experience for old-skool fans.

Summary

An unabashed slice of retro-arcade platforming goodness.

Gameplay The gameplay is pretty unique. im myself love arcade game so this game is no problem for me to try and yes the game its pretty have good mechanic like shooting with diffrend color with diffrend button and its easly to understand. It's have "Addicting" feel on it but like i said in the first tab i hope they update the image quality and the style to make or increase the game to be more intresting to see and play and yet may let the game to be more "Addicting" arcade.

Multiplayer The game said it's multiplayer ? i don't know about this but the game only can be played with 2 people and its not online ok it's not online multiplayer just in case if you wondering ! kinda sad the dont have a leaderboard system hope they'll update it in the future !

Controller Issue Nothing to complain its not really full controller support ! because i see the game doens't have that custom control or keyboard setting i do recomend playing the game with controller because of the gameplay. theres a enemy with diffrend color so example if you use XBOX layout a enemy with green color can be killed with "A" button if you know what i mean you know the rest.

Music or Sound To be honest i dont like the song on this game, i know its like a retro game but i hope the dev can make more intresting song like the game that i play recently its PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX+ that game using a retro style music but with more modern effect song so i hope the dev would think about that.... but turning out the developer doesn't make the song they buy it its like 3rd party or something else sooo i guess it will be a pretty big decission for them to make if they want to make the game more intresting !.

Playtime (Poweref by myself) It's addicted game and if you know what i mean :) atleast if youre have a free time when youre bored this game can be accompany for a while.

Story I don't really like the story afterall.... its a intergalactic exterminators things which with an enemy like a tribe statue make no sense for me so i dont really thing the story is intresting but the gameplay is good.. just weird man a galatic thing shooting in earth to protect who ? human ? or the plosher it self ?? who are we ??? are we a bad guy or a good guy ???? While the mechanics are simple, the strategies are remarkably complex. You kinda have to keep track of what's going all over the screen all the time. It keeps introducing amusing new unit types too; I recommend not looking at the enemy list in the menu, and just trying to figure out each enemy as it's introduced.
Nie, nie i jeszcze raz nie. Devie, tobie nie gry w głowie. To nie jest dobre i tyle mam do powiedzenia!
