I will start with the big question: is Infinity as good as the original Pit? Overall, no, but Infinity offers a unique, beautiful first person perspective AND multiplayer. I love and play both games, even if I do love the original Pit more. The second big question you might have is why Infinity has so many negative reviews. Honestly, all I can say is I think that, more than anything else, Infinity is suffering from the original Pit's success. People come in from the original Pit and are disappointed that Infinity lacks the same level of polish. People also seem to have frankly absurd expectations. Believe it or not, it's a hell of a lot harder to make a 3D first person RPG/shooter dungeon crawler than it is to make a turn based pixel art game. Even in an ideal world where Kerberos could continue supporting this game for the same amount of time, Infinity could NEVER have achieved the same level of quality, depth, and attention to detail. But Infinity still shines with what it has, and it is a lot of fun. I always do several runs every October because of how fun the game is and how well they nailed the spooky vibes—and I've been doing this since the game launched in early access under a different name.
I highly, highly recommend this game. If Kerberos had been able to give it the development time it deserves, it would be an undisputed gem of exceptional quality just like the original Pit. Unfortunately, we don't live in that ideal world, but Infinity is still a very good diamond in the rough. It provides a first person 3D Sword of the Stars experience that fills me with joy, excitement, and terror. Seriously, for a person obsessed with SotS, seeing it in first person 3D is AWESOME! I will NEVER forget seeing a female Zuul up close for the first time—yes, I was terrified, and I may have even screamed.
The graphics are stylized, but in my opinion very good. The human facial models are probably the weakest point in the game's models, but you barely ever look at those in play. The graphics are honestly comparable to Deep Rock Galactic for me; Infinity doesn't try to be something it cannot be, it instead excels at what it is. The animations are fluid. The aiming and gun mechanics feel both natural and good despite being more RPG than shooter. The atmosphere of the Pit is GREAT!
The choices you make in real time are fantastic rogue-like gameplay. You could grenade the armory full of security bots to make an easy combat encounter, but you'll be losing all that precious loot! Wasting ammo on rats will come back to bite you later on. Your rash decision to try and melee a turret to save ammo might end up costing you a run—I would know lol!
There are bugs, but honestly not many, and very few are game breaking. The most common bug I've found is enemies getting stuck on corners or terrain, and that is a pretty minor issue. Multiplayer does display error messages when loading sometimes, but in all the hours my brother and I have never had one save breaking issue. We were even able to save and reload when I was dead and he was carrying my body. My screen went black, but the game still ran just fine and that is a level of multiplayer sync that you don't find easily. So, yeah, there is a little jank, but it's better than what you get from any triple A title, and I will die on that hill.
Please, give this game a try and try to temper your expectations. For what it is, it's a gem, but if you go in expecting the original Pit's polish and depth in 3D, you are being unfair to yourself and the devs. The worst case scenario of buying this game is you get some memorable SotS moments and then decide it isn't for you. Your money still went to Kerberos, and that's a good cause even if this game is unfortunately no longer being developed.
