Introduction
Developed and published by Tayfun Tuna, The Orphan Dreams is the kind of game I knew it shall rue the day I’m going to write a review to it. Relatively recent and with so far, many positive reviews from others, I thoroughly despised playing it myself and couldn’t find almost any redeeming point to it. The following review may or may not upset those which have played and found it fun. But I shall never abandon my honest opinion for the shelter of positive review ratings. So the least you can do is respect my opinion, even if you disagree with my views regarding this title.
Gameplay
The Orphan Dreams would have been a somewhat decent game if priced for let’s say…1 dollar/euro. Sadly it’s currently “worth” five times as much. Its failed attempt at offering an emotional experience in laughable at best and the few mini-games and puzzles it tries to sprinkle between one tragic scene to another offer little diversion from noticing just how bland it actually is. The poorly animated and drawn images couldn’t have been worse. And I played my fair share of shovelware, on Steam and before it. You couldn’t even find it an excuse for “artistic interpretation” since it’s pretty obvious the dev team simply didn’t care polishing the game at all. As if the shoddy graphics weren’t enough, the sounds are just as atrocious and seem recorded and then played through a cheap mobile phone.
Pros
+ A few of its puzzles were interesting
Cons
- Generic and repetitive sounds and graphics - No Steam Trading Cards or Achievements - Unbalanced difficulty (through annoying puzzle timers) - Highly overpriced for what it currently offers
Result / Final thoughts
This is Tayfun Tuna’s debut on Steam but they certainly started off on the wrong foot. No Achievements or at least Trading Cards? Even Digital Homicide provides those and I’m sure almost everyone on Steam knows the general quality of the games those guys publish and develop. How can Orphan Dreams be so highly rated right now, is beyond my understanding. I shall not accept or recommend the title in its current form and I suggest to any potential buyer to avoid it unless it’s being sold for the sum I mentioned previously or given away for free. Remain reluctant even then.
The game is just a series of timing/memory puzzles. Nothing more. It gets to the point of frustration replacing enjoyment. The puzzles are not difficult in a mindbending way but rather a hair pulling way in that they require exteme quickness with your mouse and memorizing the layout while being timed on a very short clock. They are all doable but it is not what I would call a thinking mans puzzle type of game. As a diehard lover of puzzle/adventure games I really did not like this game. It may appeal to others but for me it didn't hack it. Blind faith can be costly at times. luckily for me it was only 4 bucks.
The art is horrible, game mechanics are horrible, sounds/music are horrible to dissapointing. Long story short - you run forward and click everything you see. No battle system, no loot system - no anything. You just click EVERYTHING until it dies or picks up. I've finished the first chapter just to check if there is ANYTHING this game can show me I would like. Nope. There seems to be some "mysterious" and secret mechanics that reveal the TRVE ending, but no. Thanks. Got it in the bundle, thought it would be like $0.79-0.99. Imagine my surprise when I discovered this piece of art was $5 in my region (Don't know how much does it cost for you guys).
Art is terrible. Sounds are inappropriate. The over all theme is a bit tense, and no steam overlay. The story did look a bit interesting at start but then as the game progresses it does become a bit generic and at times boring too. It has a mature theme which does looks promising at first, but as the story progresses it fails to deliver. It isn't a terrible game, but then it is not good either. Somewhere in middle. Hope that with future updates, it does add steam achievements (it does have an in game memento system kinda like achievements) or cards or overall a more polished product. Till then it is something to pick strictly only during sale.
0 Mins. Hey, this is in my library. The image looks a bit like Limbo. Let's give it a shot. 5 Mins. Wow, what a terrible platformer. It's designed for two year olds. I can't even jump and I'm popping bubbles. 10 Mins, Oh wait, is this a story driven game? Ok then, we'll progress the story and ignore the platforming. 15 Mins. WTF!! Man, that is f@cked up. 20 Mins. This is horror right? This is Saw in an orphanage, while playing as a little kid with literally zero ability to change his fate. I'm gonna switch off before the kid gets sliced up, in order to write an awesome review about how the impotent gameplay actually works in favour of playing a sweet but impotent character. This has autosave right? 20 1/2 Mins. No autosave........ I'm not entirely sure that this is a game, there's practically nothing for the player to do except play match games and pop bubbles. It's a script you walk through. That is fine when the story is engaging, as it was slowly starting to become. But I'm damned if I'm gonna play through 20 minutes of nothing again just to get back to where I was simply because the Dev forgot to put in an autosave feature.
The Orphan Dreams is a game about a child, stuck in the Orphanage. He's not just a normal child, he uses his dreams to find his mom. On his journey he finds enounters enemies and other dark secrets... Pro's: - This game's very emotional. I normally don't get emotional of games but this one did made me sad. - Nice draw style, love it! - Multiple endings!, can you find them all? :) - Amazing music at each place you are. From challenging to scary, this game got it all! - Any action you perform in the beginning can change the game! Be careful what you do :P. - Nice mini-games you have to beat to open bridges/doors. :O - Funny game reverences! Can you find those too? Cons: - No achievements and cards (yet?). - The games battle mechanism is not really advanced, but it doesn't ruin the game because of that. - Maybe a little bit too expensive, a better would be like ~3,50€, Conclusion: The game is a fun, story line twisting RPG!, Buy it if you're ready to make your adventure trough the reallity and dreams of this heroic child!
