I really enjoy visual novels and narrative-driven games, but I usually don’t write reviews. However, this game caught my attention, and I had been eagerly waiting for its release. So, I decided to write one. I'll try not to spoil anything, here we go. TL;DR: You are summoned to an abbey, where a girl named Isabella is "sick." and it's going to be one hell of a night. This is the game's setting, and from here, your choices will lead you down different paths. The Night of the Exorcism focuses on narrative and horror, with a total playtime of around 4 to 6 hours. It keeps players entertained. The game is good, reasonably priced, and I encourage people to skip the rest of this review and just play it completely blind. Moving on, here are some aspects of the game I’d like to analyze. --- Visuals The game has a unique and beautiful monochromatic style. The background, used throughout most of the game, is highly detailed and evolves as the story unfolds, influenced by choices and events. The different "Isabellas" are well-designed, making players eager to see more. While most of the game is "static," it features well-crafted transitions synchronized with the audio and text. Some of these transitions catch you off guard, even startling you if you're not expecting them. Without a doubt, the game's polish is its strongest aspect. --- Writing & Story The story is very well-written, primarily told through a mix of narration and dialogues between the two main characters, the priest and Isabella (or the different Isabellas). The storytelling follows a standard format, and since writing is the core driving force of this visual novel, it is highly detailed, which might make it a bit dense at times. The gameplay includes several features to make the reading experience more comfortable, which I'll discuss later. Unfortunately, the game lacks voice acting, which could have helped in distinguishing who is speaking at any given moment, whether it's the narration or one of the characters. Even though the text box is well-designed and indicates the speaker, voice acting for Isabella would have been a great addition. That said, the story is compelling, making you want to play until the very end. The dialogues are engaging and well-written, making the interactions feel dynamic. Sometimes, you take an active role in conversations; other times, you play a more reactive part, creating a genuine sense of interaction with another person. --- Gameplay Like most choice-based visual novels, the gameplay involves advancing through text and making decisions. The game offers multiple branching paths, and while some choices lead to the same outcome, the dialogue variations are many and create an immersive experience. In the game, you interact with Isabella, each version of her having a unique role and personality. They require different approaches, making every interaction feel fresh. To complete the game, you need to explore multiples path, which forms the core gameplay loop. --- Gameplay Loop A strong gameplay loop is essential in choice-based narrative games. Here, it works well, and the game offers many features to prevent repetition from becoming frustrating. Quick saves, auto-saves, manual saves, and a skip button that jumps straight to choices make replaying much smoother. Since the prologue is long, these features let you skip straight to the game's setup. The gameplay loop is well-designed alongside the other elements, making it easy to finish and fully complete the game. One important detail, the game maintains a global tracking, so when finishing one of the paths, it's possible to load one of the saves without losing progress. --- Audio Another strong point of the game, the audio complements the text, visuals, and transitions perfectly. Once again, the game's polish is its standout feature. The combination of narrative and synchronized sound effects enhances immersion, leading to unexpected surprises and even scares. The background music is simple but fits the game's atmosphere. It's clear that the game received a lot of care. --- Final Thoughts The Night of the Exorcism is a well-polished horror driven visual novel with an engaging story, good visual style, and great atmosphere. The narrative keeps you engaged from beginning to end, and the gameplay provides a smooth, immersive experience. Definitely worth playing.
I love a gothic/abbey plot, and this one did not let me down. Beyond the gorgeous art, it has several endings that give us a taste of wanting more. And they indeed give more context. It has some jump scares sometimes, but nothing major. The focus is on the narrative and on saving the girl
and the world.
I strongly recommend for those that like a nice gothic plot, with great reasons to save on choices and walking into the branches (lots of new things).
Clever and short visual novel where you replay the game several times until you defeat all the demons. The story puts you in the shoes of a priest in the year 1392. You have been summoned to an abbey to examine a young girl named Isabella, who has a strange illness. She is the youngest and purest of the future nuns, yet her behavior has shifted. She can be peaceful one moment and unaware of what is going on around her, and then violent the next. First and foremost, if you enjoy visual novels, you will recognize the game's engine. Although modified to fit the game's theme, including fully unique text boxes and letters, there are several quality-of-life aspects that you probably can not live without. The most essential features are the ability to save at any moment (activated with the right mouse button) and the option to skip text. Skipping provides three possibilities, but none of them are encouraged because they defeat the entire purpose of visual novels. Having said that, this option becomes invaluable because the game must be replayed several times to reveal the entire story. It does not take long to figure out what is wrong. The girl is possessed. Furthermore, she is possessed by multiple demons, rather than just one. Each demon alters the girl's behavior and appearance, while also representing one of the deadly sins. For example, while Lilith, the demon of lust, sprouts wings and attempts to woo the priest, Beelzebub, the king of gluttony and flies, develops a long tongue and sharp teeth. Art is pleasant. However, with the exception of an introductory scene, the entire game takes place in one room. Although it adds some detail to each demon, the majority of the place remains unchanged. One fun feature is the random apparition of dark and spooky shadows outside the window, in the mirror's reflection, or on one of the paintings. The entire experience hinges around your approach to the exorcism and the demon you face. This is accomplished by making choices at the beginning. You are given several choices, yet each leads to a different devil. After that, the process is identical for each demon. First, you chat with it to find out what it wants, and then you are given a choice: accept the demon's offer and meet a tragic end, or execute the exorcism and reveal to Isabell that the demon is gone. However, this still results in a bad ending because you get a small paragraph stating that the exorcism was not totally successful before returning to the main menu. To get to the proper ending, you must replay the game until you have defeated all of the demons. This will let you choose the final response and reveal the final demon. One major disappointment is that none of the bad endings provide any reward in the shape of images; instead, you get a few lines of text on a black background.
I had a great time playing this game. I was able to stream it and it had both myself and my chat trying to figure all the paths out and find the true ending, and when we did we loved it! I can see all the hard work that has been put into this game! I hope/can't wait to see even more come to the game in the future!
A visually striking, compact VN that realizes its potential
This game will keep you on edge. Very creative too, made me want to explore all the possible branching paths. Definitely worth it!
A hidden gem! It's a GREAT visual novel. You have to start he game over and over again, and it's fun figuring out the routes. I've run into an issue and I posted about it on the developer's discord and they were very responsive. The art style is stunning, and very expressive. Can't wait to reach all the way to end of the game and see what I missed nearly a decade ago... Note: it says the visual novel has full audio in English, but the characters are not voiced- just a heads up. If you've played "Slay the Princess" before and enjoyed it, you're going to like this game :)
I randomly stumbled upon this game recently and was honestly REALLY surprised I did not hear about it sooner. The game gives off Slay the Princess vibes and some SLIGHT Doki Doki vibes as well which are two of my favorite games! I was able to finish it in one sitting as well so not overly lengthy but definitely worth checking out if you enjoy visual novels like Slay The Princess! Such an INSANELY underrated gem in my opinion! Part 1 of my Playthrough below! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY7muIMKjmY
