Half a year after Trails in the Sky SC, Father Kevin Graham takes on a routine mission on behalf of the Septian Church. He and his partner are then plunged into a realm that follows an unnaturally strict set of rules and is as intent to open old wounds as it is to keep them behind closed doors.

Nothing really prepares you for Star Door 15
I will try again I guess but after only 9 hours I just couldn't get into this game at all. The first 2 were amazing but this one seems to be missing some of the joy and magic of the first 2. I might edit this review after I attempt to play this again, so just a warning for anyone who enjoyed the first 2 this one doesn't seem anything like them. Edit: Well I haven't finished the game yet but after playing much more of it I still stand by my previous statement BUT the game does get a little better the more you go on, as it stands now it feels like a filler game (like those random filler episodes in Anime lol) but the lore looks like it's really important for the next games (Crossbell, Erebonia and Calvard) If you don't enjoy this one I recommend watching the story and door stories online so you at least get backstory and lore for the other games.
The epilogue of the trilogy with a different MC. Don't play on higher difficulties than normal if you want to enjoy the combat, which this entry focuses on more than the previous two. Play FC and SC first before touching this.
So one chapter closes, and now another one begins. Trails in the Sky is genuinely the best game trilogy I've played thus far, a coherent and classic JRPG story that seems to be quite literally just the prologue to the larger series, with 11+ more games to go and counting. I legitimately cannot wait to pick up Trails from Zero and begin the Crossbell arc, and eventually get to the Cold Steel arc and see the rest of the Erebonians. While there were some moments that dragged due to me needing to grind and prepare--especially as a semi-completionist when it comes to games like these--Every hour of this game was absolutely worth the investment. Also, 16 playable characters with full character development arcs and story prominence?? Absolutely DELICIOUS! Also, a lot of people told me this game would be the darkest game in the series, however that's not quite true, though not that it's a bad thing it isn't. Sky 3rd does have some very dark contents--particularly near the final dozen hours of the game--but it's not that much to determine the entire game as dark. It definitely is as lighthearted as the prior two games, which is just the perfect kind of lighthearted storytelling without feeling low stakes or childish. I genuinely love Estelle, and she's become one of my favorite female characters in modern fiction, but this game definitely properly allowed me to appreciate Kevin as the main character. I thought he'd be pretty cool and interesting, but he is just so layered and has so much depth to him, just like Estelle! It seems Falcom has a knack for writing really likeable and most of all, main characters that truly feel human! After rolling credits on each of the three games in this trilogy, I went "Man." Just absolutely floored at the masterclass of writing this series has, and what a beautifully heartwarming and just perfect it truly is. I cried at the end of the Sky FC, my heart felt simultaneously warm and empty at the end of the Sky SC, and I absolutely had a river flowing at the end of Sky 3rd. I'm going to really miss these characters... Apparently Anelace doesn't get ANY other appearance in any other Trails game?? WHAT??? THAT'S HERESY! But even so, there comes a day when we all have to say goodbye eventually. And that's why we have to smile.

Kevin's whacky ride was great, this might even be the best of the trilogy. One part wrap up and send off for the cast, one part tasteful fan service, one part tactical combat, and one part character drama. Far and away the best combat and gameplay of the trilogy. Some sections may have been a little long winded perhaps but the design of the fights was superior and the cast of characters and balance was refined. Getting to play as Richard and Renne was awesome. The mini-games were honestly charming, I can't bring myself to be overly cynical about them. They took maybe an hour to two collectively to finish on all difficulties for me. I really liked the plot and framing of this game. Phantasma is cool idea (Persona 5 ripped this off btw) and it works perfectly as a vehicle for what the developers wanted to accomplish with this game. Kevin and Ries have a lot of heavy lifting to do standing in for Estelle and Joshua, who of course also return with the rest of the cast, as our new protagonists. I liked Kevin in SC and it was satisfying to figure out what his deal actually was. They manage to develop his character in this game in about 30 hours almost as much as any character developed over the 100 hours of FC and SC. To avoid spoilers I won't go into detail but our new leading characters are excellent, a believable relationship that manages to distinguish itself from the story told in the first two games. A fair amount of set up for later titles goes on in this game, and that's almost worth the price of admission alone. There's some decent "world building" (a dirty word, I know) at play as well hidden amidst the optional content in the star doors. Now I only fear that the writers will forget everything that percolated in this trilogy in later games! I won't prattle on too long, if you liked SC and FC you *will* like this game too. Absolutely recommended do not let people dissuade you. "Every day you spend with someone could turn out to be the last, and that's a reality all of us have to face up to and fight every day.... and that's why we have to smile!" - Estelle Bright
