The Kids We Were is a simple, medium-length (~9 hours) adventure game with a focus on story. It's a game about children, but - like the title suggests - not made for children, but for those who once were children. And, like the original title suggests - "Don't forget, even when you become an adult."), it just may remind you of some things you've long forgotten. The main character, Minato (11) goes back in time from 2020 to 1987, where he has to solve some mysteries to change the future - his present. Aside from time-travel, the game is rather realistic, and the problems he encounters are mostly down-to-earth, even if at first they may seem to be of a supernatural... nature. During his adventures he meets people, makes friends, finds more about his parents and - optionally - collects 91 items from the era (all with 3d models and descriptions). At times the game is funny, sometimes emotional, often nostalgic - even if you happen to not have grown up in a 1980s Japan. It also touches a lot of serious subjects that not many games pick up, and it's very subtle about it too. I'm not really a fan of voxel graphics, but The Kids We Were is quite pretty, the music sparse but fitting the atmosphere. Overall, I think anyone who likes a good story should be able to enjoy this little gem.
Objectively:
8.7/10

The Kids We Were takes you on the journey of a young boy who's trying to change the future. Through colorful graphics and characters, you find yourself immersed in the story and wanting nothing more than for it to keep going. I never truly played a game like this, but I am beyond happy that I got the chance to experience this story and look forward to playing it again!

A game with a sense of nostalgia even if never encountered it before, the rich story makes you immersed almost immediately, I recommend it if you want to set and relax playing a slowly while enjoying the soundtracks
