The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is the magnum opus of two of Japan's best mystery writers, and the result is a monumental visual novel-RPG with mind blowing twists, great characters, and lots of thought provoking dillemas. The combat is quick and fun, and instead of scaling into damage sponges, it actually becomes quicker and more eventful and action packed as you progress. The key feature in this game is the decision making, and while it only becomes available late into the game, it was my favorite feature. By choosing how to tackle different story decisions, the game changes genres and explores different routes, such as comedy, romance, or horror. The game is built from the ground up so that you can collect these different routes and endings, letting you skip battles you've already fought, and keep progression, so you don't need to save scum. It was a once-in-a-video-game-history experience, and after playing all 100 endings, I'm happy to recommend it to anyone else. The available demo is a great place to start!

Great game, a couple of missteps but thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm really enjoying this visual novel, and it feels like it was made specifically for people who like the bizarre mystery of a Danganronpa crossed with the diverging endings of the Zero Escape series. As a fan of both of those franchises, it scratches that itch big time. In addition to the VN style, the Fire Emblem-esque turn based strategy is pretty enjoyable (although very breakable). I also like that after a certain point the game streamlines aspects that would normally be repetitive, such as battles you have already done or resource collection, while still giving you some benefits even by skipping the activities once they have wore out their welcome. But if you are considering this game you probably should be doing it for the story. As of this writing I'm about 60 hours in with several endings. I don't know if I will 100% the game, but there's a lot here to go through and things feel sufficiently unique in each route that make that investment of time worth it. I often don't like it when it feels like games don't respect the player's time. While this game is very time consuming, it feels worthwhile as it shows you something new each time you go for a new ending. Many games try to go for choices that make the player feel like they made an impact yet give most players the same essential path to the end, but in Hundred Line, your choices matter immensely. Anyway, if you are into the games I mentioned and you are willing to invest the time, this is a very rich story experience.
