It was a great game but it fully crashed my PC at the beginning of it during stream not sure why tbh.. then we almost finished the game but the part at the type writer near the end did what it was supposed to do but the next part never happened I saved and closed the game and went back 3 times so I can't progress unfortunately to have finished it. The puzzles where good mind you the music one was difficult for me personally everytime I thought we had it nope. As for recommendations of I'm not sure since I never got to finish it since it won't let me move on on the game even though I did everything right which was frustrating.
Recomendado.
I genuinely wish I could give this a more positive review, but I'd be lying if I said I walked away from it feeling like it was "time well spent". The first and most glaring problem is that the game is way too dark for its own good. There are a number of situations where you're basically in almost pitch black darkness, and even when the lights are on they often barely illuminate the area well enough to see what you're doing. This makes finding some of the objects or clues unnecessarily difficult. The sole saving grace is that drawers and doors will highlight if you mouse over them, but that doesn't make the problem go away. The second big issue stems from the random-factor to both the labyrinth and the music tuning puzzle. While the former could be forgiven if there wasn't an arbitrary achievement centered completely around luck, the second is just a regrettably poor choice by the developer. I understand they wanted it to be a puzzle but a great many people have difficulty telling such tones apart and there's no visual aide. Unlike the Selentic Age sound puzzle in Myst, which uses several distinctly different sounds in conjunction with a fixed rule/pattern to follow, The Guest's sound puzzle is completely random so no amount of looking around is going to help. You just have to either brute force it, get lucky, or be one of those capable of picking out the different notes. It's a puzzle that could have easily been averted by handling it differently, either by removing the randomized element or giving them some visual representation that tone deaf people can grasp instead. Or, you know, both. The last thing that sinks the game as being something I could recommend is that rather abrupt and out-of-nowhere way in which the game ends. Whatever sense of mystery or curiosity the game was offering early on is just washed away immediately by the reveal in the final section. I want to say there's no build up, but there actually is.. it's just.. not pointing in the direction the game actually goes. I'll add a short spoiler explaining this:
You find various little notes like "they're watching" or "don't turn it off" in what look like hastily scrawled messages in warning. Except if the entire thing is a fabrication/test than they know about these notes and quite probably put them there. It turns the entire premise of the game into a red herring. Same with the newspaper clippings, it does not mesh with the big reveal.
In any case, if you're curious and have a few bucks burning a whole in your pocket then maybe get it on a big discount... otherwise, there's far better games in this genre you can find.
The Guest, developed by Team Gotham and published by 505 Games, is a first-person puzzle adventure that builds its identity around isolation, mystery, and slow-burning psychological tension. Set almost entirely within the confines of a decrepit hotel, the game places players in the role of Dr. Evgueni Leonov, a scientist who awakens trapped in a locked room with no immediate explanation. The premise is simple but effective, creating a sense of claustrophobia from the outset and encouraging players to search every corner of their environment for clues about their situation. The strongest element of The Guest is its atmosphere. The abandoned hotel feels oppressive and forgotten, with dim lighting, muted color palettes, and environmental detail that hints at a past life now decayed. The sound design plays a critical role in reinforcing this mood. Subtle ambient noises, creaking structures, and distant echoes enhance the tension without resorting to overt horror tropes. While the game is not a traditional horror experience filled with jump scares, it cultivates unease through quiet moments and unanswered questions. This emphasis on tone makes exploration feel purposeful and immersive rather than simply mechanical. Gameplay centers entirely on puzzle-solving and environmental interaction. There is no combat, no stealth mechanics, and no fast-paced action. Instead, players methodically examine objects, combine inventory items, and decipher clues embedded in documents and surroundings. The puzzles range from straightforward logic challenges to more intricate riddles that require careful observation and patience. Many of these tasks are integrated naturally into the setting, such as repairing devices, unlocking coded mechanisms, or interpreting scientific notes. The design encourages deliberate thinking rather than guesswork, rewarding players who pay close attention to their surroundings. Narratively, The Guest unfolds through environmental storytelling and scattered documents rather than cinematic cutscenes or extensive dialogue. This fragmented approach aligns well with the mystery-driven structure, allowing players to piece together fragments of information about the protagonist’s past and the circumstances leading to his confinement. The gradual unveiling of secrets blends psychological and science fiction elements, though the pacing can feel uneven. Early intrigue is strong, but as the story progresses, some players may find that the narrative resolution does not fully capitalize on the suspense established in the opening hours. Certain plot threads remain ambiguous, which can either be interpreted as thought-provoking or unsatisfying depending on player expectations. The confined setting is both a strength and a limitation. Concentrating the majority of gameplay within a limited number of interconnected rooms heightens the claustrophobic tone and ensures that every object feels potentially significant. However, over time, the restricted environment can begin to feel repetitive, particularly during moments when players revisit previously explored spaces searching for overlooked clues. The deliberate pacing amplifies this effect, making patience a key requirement for enjoying the experience fully. Visually, the game adopts a realistic but understated presentation. The graphics do not aim for cutting-edge fidelity, yet the attention to detail in textures, lighting, and environmental composition effectively supports the atmosphere. The hotel’s worn furniture, peeling wallpaper, and scattered belongings contribute to the sense of abandonment. Small touches, such as flickering lights or reflections in dusty mirrors, add subtle depth to the environment. While the game’s scale is modest, its visual consistency helps sustain immersion. The overall playtime is relatively concise, typically lasting a few hours depending on puzzle-solving speed. This compact structure prevents the experience from overstaying its welcome, though some players may wish for additional content or expanded exploration beyond the central setting. Replay value is limited once puzzles have been solved, as the primary appeal lies in discovery and narrative progression rather than branching paths or alternate outcomes. Technically, The Guest performs reliably on modern systems, with intuitive first-person controls and a straightforward interface. The lack of complex mechanics ensures accessibility, allowing players to focus entirely on unraveling the mystery. Steam integration features such as achievements complement the experience but do not significantly alter gameplay. Ultimately, The Guest succeeds as a moody, introspective puzzle adventure that prioritizes atmosphere and cerebral engagement over spectacle. Its strength lies in its carefully constructed tension, environmental storytelling, and methodical puzzle design. While the confined setting and somewhat restrained narrative payoff may not satisfy every player, those who appreciate slow-paced exploration and psychological intrigue will find it a compelling and thoughtfully designed experience. Rating: 7/10
I am unable to complete the game because I am stuck on the music puzzle.
The Guest is a first-person puzzle and mystery game where you wake up locked inside a strange hotel room and have to figure out how to escape. The story unfolds through environmental clues, notes, and puzzles, slowly revealing what’s really going on. I liked the concept and the general vibe. The puzzles are solid, the mystery keeps you curious, and the confined setting works well for this kind of experience. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s a neat, focused adventure that’s enjoyable if you like escape-room-style games and quiet, story-driven mysteries.
The puzzles were relatively good. The story they laid on top of it, though, was scuffed and confusing. Also the voice acting was immersion breaking. Though that was also part of the story. The juxtaposed plasticky Woah We're So Futuristic areas were also part of the story and immersion breaking. like I dunno, 6/10? I got this for free because it was a Christmas present.
