The very definition of "meh"
Overall score: 5.65/10 Value for money: 6.5/10 This game is the very definition of "meh". After the first 10 to 15 minutes, after Grandma has popped out a couple times, excitement and intrigue steadily decline until you're left wondering "When will it end?"—not because you're terrified, but because you're terribly bored.
Graphics and Visuals (10%): 7/10
Visually, the graphics were quite good: crisp images, realistic grime on the walls, etc. But the repeated use of a lot of the assets made it obvious that this is a low budget game. It also bothered me when there would be visual glitches that allowed me to see beyond walls or through corners. The shadow "physics" also seemed to be a bit messy; multiple times, I would try to look at something and my own shadow would get in the way.
Sound Design (15%): 5.5/10
Not very creative or effective sound design. The timing was unimaginative and pretty atrocious. Urgent screeching and ominous slow pounding would come in sometimes, but rather than making me feel scared, they just made me think, "Oh is Granny about to pop out?" And when she didn't, that made the sound effects even less effective as I continued to play. Honestly, the slow pounding reminded me a lot of the pounding in SLENDER, when you get the fourth or fifth page. The only difference was, in SLENDER, the sound actually made me feel anxious and kept me on my toes. In The Guest, it gets old pretty quickly, especially once you realize the sounds don't really mean anything.
Controls and Optimization (15%): 6/10
I really hated the controls. In what universe is it better to press "E" rather than the LMB if you want to activate something like a light switch or pick something up (the two main things you do in this game aside from walking)? Not to mention I didn't even see any indication that you have to press "E" to interact with things—I only knew to try to press it because I've played a few other horror games where "E" is "interact". There was a notice to "press shift to sprint" multiple times in the game, but no mention of pressing "E" to interact? That doesn't make sense. There were a few customization options for graphics and sound settings, but nothing that seemed to actually make a difference. And, of course no option to remap the controls, unfortunately (my main gripe).
Gameplay (20%): 5.5/10
Walking/scavenger hunt/jump scare simulator with laughable chase scenes. Typical "find the next key/puzzle piece to unlock the next room and beat the game" mechanics. Nothing original or compelling.
Story and Logic (20%): 5/10
There was a tiny hint of story in the form of a flashback of
how Grandma died
, but that was pretty much it. The real point of curiosity was the sh!tton of old school computer equipment scattered everywhere—especially
in the basement
for some weird ass reason. I was starting to build conspiracy theories in my head, like was Grandma some sort of
secret special agent hacker woman who was shot and killed because she knew too much
? Sadly, my conspiracy theory seemed much more interesting than what the actual story was, which was pretty much nothing (unless there's another ending I didn't achieve).
Horror, Atmosphere, and Immersiveness (25%): 4.5/10
As I mentioned before, graphics and sounds were entertaining... for the first 15 or so minutes. Afterwards, they get old and the jump scares get predictable. Halfway through the game, I was wishing Grandma would jump out and "kill" me so I could fast-travel back to the checkpoint and not have to walk all the way back to where I needed to be. This is the main indicator of a failed horror game for me: if the one thing that's supposed to scare the player becomes the thing the player wants to encounter, then the horror game becomes a farce.
Story mak jelas tapi jumpscare ngeselin banget, okelah kalau buat stream mah
Game feels like a half baked walking sim with ai art
WORST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED TOO BORING TOO LAME TOO SHI TTO FK EVERYTHING BAD BAD BAD
This is the worst horror game I've ever played. I also bought Crimson Snow (which is the same style and I've already beaten it), but this game's camera shake and optimization made this game suck.
Crazy atmosphere, well timed scares and tense chases chases, very much looking forward to playing the 2nd game! https://youtu.be/BsfIODMzmoM
Foah.. I had to uninstall it, I'm scareeeeeeeeed iaiaiaiaiiaiaiai :(
