This review was originally positive, but it seems I was a bit premature in praising it for not being a pc party pamphlet. My issue begins with my choosing to have my personal reaper use the guise of Vanth the beautiful benevolent Demoness. During a conversation with Vanth, I told her I was happy it was a woman guiding me to the afterlife. The author you see then makes Vanth get into her feelings and go on an emotional tirade about how I couldn't possibly know she isn't really a man or genderless under her shell and about how I can change her body but can't change the person she is on the inside & I better learn to accept it? Come on dude... an ancient being of incalculable age isn't about to catch petty feelings about gender association because mere mortal moi referred to it as a woman when it allowed me to design it as a woman. Just couldn't control yourself and refrain from the political grandstanding, could you? Just had to put a damper on a good character and story with politically correct angst. I'm very disappointed. Its like watching someone make a delicious banana creme pie, but then they add jalapenos on top, when the jalapenos have no business being there just so the jalapenos don't feel left out. Thumbs down.
If Choice of Robots is a spider web of choices, Grim and I is a river; you might deviate here and there but the story ultimately is going in one direction. Should you have to choose between this and Choice of Robots, play this first, then Choice of Robots. If you can only pick one, get Choice of Robots. This story, though good, is a step down in terms of quality. Set your expectations lower if you're coming here after Choice of Robots and want more of the same. If you liked the robot customization section of Choice of Robots, Grim and I has a similar section where you customize the grim reaper, though it's not as deep. My first run I made the grim reaper into a cat named Kitty. You can imagine how that may have changed scenes that were supposed to be serious. It's not as bad as I make it sound though. This is a quality story. Would I buy it again? Probably not. But I'm not disappointed in the experience I got out of it.
A short read, but a good one. I suggest actually taking a moment to actually get in character with this one. Try using your own name, and the names of Others you know when asked for them. While no story or game can be quiet as complicated as real life (even for the most boring of us eh?) I think this one does quiet a good job of drawing you in and letting you get a glimpse, just a glimpse of what it might be like for you when uhm that time comes ( with a few caveats that the game needs to work with, the Great Unknown is still the Unknown after all, but these caveats are solidly rooted in established lore and do their job perfectly.) All in all id say this is a 9 out of 10. It does just what it sets out to do. The story while shorter than others in this genre honestly just doesnt need to be any longer than it is... and certainly is long enough for you to make the decisions you need to. "Those things left undone, untouched, and unsaid; Lie heavy upon the souls of the Dead." - me =) I think this story attempts to answer what if anything the Dead might do about that, if they could.
Not inclusive for single people at all...
So, this one is weird to me. It had a concept that I really enjoyed, with a story that felt unique while remaining in familiar territory. That being said though, is kind of where my praise has to stop. First and foremost; the story was entirely too short and was over before I realized it. Also, as one other user phrased it, you just had to put your own personal PC nonsense into what was otherwise an entertaining story, didn't you? You just couldn't handle going one minute without spewing your garbage on everyone else as if you needed to let everyone know that you're a crossfit vegan cyclist in your off time when you're not doing whatever this is. Had the author managed to keep their own politics out of the story, greatly to the detriment of an essential character, then this would've been worth recommending, even if only on sale. But I honestly, just can't recommend it. 4/10
Disclaimer: Another reviewer mentions the occurrence of an unfitting political undertone when choosing a female reaper - while I haven't experienced this in my playthrough, I have to admit that I find it very inappropriate and that it would have made my gameplay less enjoyable as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------ So, this game is very emotional and in a way, will suck all of your energy while your time runs out. I didn't even choose my own name to play (that would scare me endlessly, tbh) and still i found myself crying over the unconditional love of my dying main character and the loved one she left behind. The wish to say goodbye one last time, or to tend to another unfinished business before leaving for good, is something every player can relate to. The reaper is nicely written and grows onto you, even though he seems to be a b*tch at first, I promise. The only downside (which is not a reason to not buy and experience this game): I feel like it's really hard to replay this one. Firstly, the game doesn't seem to offer as many diverse outcomes as COGs usually do. But the biggest problem I have with this: Once you made your way through an emotionally draining playthrough, it's almost impossible to detach yourself from it in a way where you can leave your last story behind and start a new one. This is kind of philosophical, since that is what the reaper is doing: Tending to the next dying person, forcing himself to concentrate on them and forgetting about the last one... Kudos to him, but for me, this is barely possible. I don't know if I ever will touch this game again. I surely enjoyed this game very deeply.
Alternative title: How to get rid of your emotional baggage. Let death come to the old you and embrace the transformation in your life. So I do not recommend it if you're not prepared to let go just yet. Or maybe this is exactly what you need. What can I say? ♪ ♫ Let it go, let it go! Can't hold it back anymore ♫ ♪ About the replayability: - Your choices do impact the outcome, but you can only see that in new playthroughs. These subtleties are an essential part of the storytelling and the philosophical reflection. - Reacting differently to your grim reaper shows different sides of their personality. Really well written. - Choosing different forms for your grim reaper unlocks special hidden dialogues. And there are a lot of mythological options from different cultures! I-I'm just so emotionally drained. Yes this game is amazing. Just. Wow. So simple, yet so effective.
