About

You’re held prisoner by the hideous Lich, who captured you during his expansion wars and locked you up for eternity in his fortress with the other outcasts. With no name, no past, and left to rot in a place of death and damnation, you have one goal: survive... and escape.
Advance through different rooms in this horrific citadel, face the enemies that block your way, and keep on your path toward an illusory salvation. Every choice counts: in combat, in the alliances you make, in the upgrades you will accept.
The path is long and unforgiving. Each step could lead you closer to freedom... or drag you toward an even darker fate. But in The Fortress, death is never the end: when a prisoner falls, another one takes their place, in endless cycles of suffering and hope.
Will you endure long enough to see the light of day again?

Each game is different from the previous one.
Choose from nine available classes and customize your prisoner with unique abilities, upgrades, and gear. Advance one room at a time through a procedurally generated path, designed to be always unpredictable and full of surprises.
Confront the Lich’s dark army with a combat system based on dice rolls, which blends strategy and risk at every choice. Pick up hundreds of items, relics, and gear items to adapt your playstyle and increase your chances of survival.
During your escape, experience a dark and gothic story, populated by enigmatic characters who are ready to offer a helping hand... or betray you.

The Fortress is full of monsters, but also full of unexpected opportunities.
Throughout your journey, you will encounter unlikely and unreliable allies: vampire merchants, disgraced abbots, and other eerie characters, each with their own secrets and hidden agendas. Their help could prove to be vital... but at what cost?
It is up to you to choose whom to trust, which alliances to forge, and when to walk away. Each choice could push you closer to salvation or sentence you to an untimely demise.
And if you fall on the battlefield, another prisoner will be ready to take up your legacy and attempt to escape again.

The Fortress was developed by Baryonyx Games, an Italian independent studio based in the ancient city of Rome. It was founded out of our passion for old-school video games, complex systems, and dark settings.
We are a small, passionate team fully involved in every phase of development: we design, develop, and polish every detail with care, collaborating with trusted creatives when needed to bring our vision to life.
For us, The Fortress is more than a game: it is an ongoing challenge against the unknown. Each mechanic, room, and battle is crafted to build a world of choices, survival, risk, and sacrifice, blending retro aesthetics with a distinctive artistic and narrative identity. In other words, our goal is to deliver experiences that deeply resonate with our players.

Good idle dungeon crawler clicker for one evening. The art and atmosphere is right on spot, the gameplay is actually forgiving (at least, in the Classic mode). The downside that could easily drag this review to the thumbs down zone is the story rails. It's always the same stages and rooms, same bosses, same two "friendly" characters appearing here and there. You won't feel the procedural nature of the gameplay as well as the declared "unexpected opportunities". There are hints in the art design the game will grow in the future, but then why wasn't this game marked as Early Access?

Game is freezing while dragging equipment to the slots, had to request a refund. Annoying game mechanics and a lot to improve. Sadly, wasted potential and cool optics. There are no Graphic Settings and no Window Mode. All you can do is STRG+ALT to have it windowed. I can't see any progression system with the points either, would have been cool to invest in more life, dice etc. I can't recommend to buy the game before the developer fixed/improved it.
The Fortress è stata una sorpresa davvero positiva.
Finally made it to the Lich so now I want to share my thoughts: - Graphic style and cutscenes are absolutely stunning like 10/10 - Gameplay is a nice little dice game, but nothing more. Those die are somehow meant to represent attributes, which is a nice idea, but in the battle system not coherent; it is actually just different colors that u need to kill enemies. Why should a rat need "special" or "mind" instead of strength to be slaughtered? This does not feel authentic. - It is a Dungeon Crawler only in presentation. Actually it skipped all the Dungeon Crawling, there is just a succession of fights and some bonus rooms, the plot is relocated to the cutscenes. U can do it like that, but having a Dungeon Crawler with this artstyle where u actually walk through a map to find stuff and make ur way through a scenario would have been amazing. - Then the controls could be made a bit smoother. For example, items and bonus items are dragged into the inventory and onto the hero, but the dice aren't dragged onto the enemies; instead, u click on them step by step and then click on the enemies. I think this should have been done consistently, so u could drag the dice onto the enemies; that would be more intuitive. Overall, it would also be much more convenient if the game had gempad support, which could certainly be implemented easily. I actually hate roguelikes with their addictive mechanics and constant random upgrades that artificially lengthen the game. Therefore, I struggled with this game at first, but I like it anyways. It's a nice dice game with a great atmosphere, and for that, it's very good. It just depends on your expectations. I think it would be fantastic if the same devs made a proper Dungeon RPG - that plays like a D&D scenario module - like Underkeep or Secret of Weepstone in this style like The Fortress. :AlienCat:
Sehr gute atmospähre für den preis ! Gefällt mir ! Musik untermalung auch sehr gelungen !
Gameplay is extremely RNG-reliant. Not for me.
bad reviews for this game are done by bad people, its that simple. if you like a good roguelike old school crawl, join up. If your like the Bieber fans then leave a negative review and go to your furry meetup.
I wish I could rate this "Neutral" or "Meh" The art style, sound, and voicework are beautiful, and create an excellent vibe. Bleak, gothic horror isn't exactly a new idea, but this game does it really well. However, the gameplay is painful. There's a real lack of meaningful choices to make during a run, and the RNG elements can be downright frustrating. The enemies have three different kinds of health, and you deal three different kinds of damage, which sounds like a neat system. Unfortunately, it's really easy to end up with a bunch of, say, green health on your enemies while your one green die refuses to roll any damage at all. Combine that with a really lackluster loot system that serves as your only form of air-quotes "progression" within a run, and it feels like the player has very little control over how any given playthrough goes. Also, it didn't bother me much but there is a lack of polish as well. I encountered several bugs, including freezes and the game refusing to process that I'd died, which forced me to reset. Plus there's some odd formatting, no quick way to restart a run with the same character/items, and at least one item with a bugged description text. I also got really tired of the same intro cutscene/tutorial screen after the third or fourth run. Not a big deal, honestly, but it does drag down an already mediocre experience. I might revisit this after some more updates, but currently I can't recommend The Fortress.
