The Far Kingdoms: Winter Solitaire (+1/-1 Solitaire) Spider alert, for those sensitive to such things! Options include separate sliders for music and sound, full-screen, widescreen and custom cursor. When I play a solitaire game, I really like a challenge. Click-click-clicking just doesn't keep my interest as much as a game where I have to strategize, so the gameplay in this one was disappointing for me. I'll explain below. The story in Winter Solitaire is very thin - just barely holding things together. There are 20 levels to the game, each consisting of five rounds of +1/-1 solitaire. Click on cards that are one higher or one lower than the foundation card, making runs (combos) as high as possible before you have to draw another card. Occasionally you will have a "hidden object scene", which is simply finding 10 of whatever-item the story calls for at the time. There is a rechargeable HINT for these levels, and no penalty when you use them. To pass each level, you need to collect 10 rubies, which can be found beneath piles of cards in the playing field. Rounds can be re-played as many times as you like before progressing to the next round. Here's where it fell flat for me. We are given stats at the end of each level, but they're pretty much meaningless, since there is no minimum-card-left to pass the round. You can match one single card on a round, and still progress to the next round... As long as you have 10 gems before you hit the "Continue" button on round 5/5, that's all that's required to progress in the game. NOTE: You CANNOT go back and replay levels that you've already completed, and when you reach the end, that's it, game over. There's no incentive to clear all of the cards or to clear as many as possible. No achievements, no requirements. Just those 10 gems, and you can technically get all 10 of them by just replaying one hand until you have them all. If you accidentally hit "Continue" on round 5/5 without having all 10 gems, you'll have to start the level over again, but you'll ONLY lose the gems you've accumulated for the level - not any money you've earned. Speaking of money, we have a shop with a few useful items, such as an extra undo, or starting your combo meter at 1.2, but I couldn't use either the sword or the spear - I never could find a way to use them! Items that you purchase can be sold for half of what you paid for them. To offset the shop items that you (or least I) can't use, we have companions join us on our journey, and they can be VERY helpful! Their abilities are charged by collecting cards that match symbol next to their picture (except that the spade and club images should be switched! They're labeled wrong!) Another plus would be our froggy friend, who will sell us random wild cards for 100 gold each. Much more helpful than the shop items, anyway! What the game has going for it: First of all, we have three choices for card face design. The deck design is lovely already, but getting to choose what the rest of the deck looks like was a nice touch! The sound effects were nice, and the music also quite nice, but it's the graphics where the game really shines. I really appreciated that they give us plenty of time to take screenshots of their lovely background artwork. Kudos for that! Thoughts: I think the developers missed the opportunity to make this a truly addictive card game by leaving the structure too "loose", and with too little challenge, but all is not lost. I think that one can make it more interesting by adding their own restrictions, such as not going on to the next round unless there are less than three cards left, or by having to have perfects on every round. If however you prefer to just zone on an easy card game, this will fill that desire as well! Recommended for those who like easy card games, and for those who are willing to add their own challenges to make things more interesting.
Wunsch: Steam-Errungenschaften
My first reaction to this game was: oh, that's a neat improvement over their other bundled solitaire games, Age of Solitaire and Awakening Solitaire... Then I played it further and realized this team really has a long way to go before they can learn to develop a proper game. - The story is completely stupid. It's an obvious attempt to cash in on Frozen, and literally it can be summed up as this: ice queen wakes up from slumber, is pissed off, freezes the entire land, you take off, cross the land, unfreeze some stuff that's in the way (by playing cards), kill a few dragons (by playing cards), kill the queen (by playing cards), and... there's a two-line paragraph that tells you the evil will come back. The end. - The hidden object scenes are, by far, the easiest HOSes I've ever played. Everything is in plain view and very obvious. All of those stages can be completed in less than 30 seconds, and that's if you take your time. The only 'difficult' object took me 10 more seconds, and that's because the developer shoved it behind the interface by mistake. There are only a few dozen pixels that are visible. The only reason I found it immediately is because I was used to the interface graphics. Seriously, is this a game for young children? - Half of the shop items are useless. They take your money for it, and don't give you anything in return. The only items that work are the extra undo, the 1.2 multiplier, and the top card peek entry. (The latter being just as badly implemented as in Age of Solitaire... They really never learn.) - If you use a wildcard to remove a lone card at the end, and aren't satisfied by the lack of a ruby behind it, pressing 'Undo' does nothing, and if you have the extra Undo, it will... reset the entire round. Yay. - The game never tells you how to unlock chained cards, and the key to unlock them is always hidden at the bottom of a stack, *and* never visible, meaning there's a chance you'll never be able to unlock the card... Thankfully, that's only a feature of the Dwarves area. - The 'random card on foundation' powerup is broken... On my first try it gave me a money card... And that's all. It didn't register as a chest of gold, so it just stayed there, didn't give me money, and forced me to draw another card... Ah ah. What a terribly programmed game. - Generally speaking, the game glorifies emptying out stacks. I've played dozens of these games, and it's the first time I'm seeing one that encourages leaving long stacks untouched on the board, focusing on emptying shorter stacks and hoping they'll have a ruby behind them. (Generally, one stack equals one ruby, unless there are more than 3 or 4 stacks on the screen.) I'm not completely against the idea, in fact it's interesting to explore, but once you understand that, it makes the game way too easy. You don't even have to use rubies to unfreeze cards, as long as you get enough rubies to complete round 5... The only hard stages were the last 3-4, and I only had to redo one because I didn't realize it had become slightly harder. My review for Age of Solitaire still holds well when it comes to Winter Solitaire: https://steamcommunity.com/id/naogilles/recommended/997480
the second entry in the far kingdom series of puzzle games (hidden object, match-3 and solitaire), the first solitaire and the second game I played, the first being sacred grove solitaire, which is very similar to this, so I'll link my review for easier comparison. the usual fare, +1/-1 gameplay, fantasy setting (princess saves the world from the evil ice queen), decent graphics and music, separate volume sliders, and much to my surprise, a brightness slider! aside from undo and volume sliders (and saving anywhere and many others), this is my biggest pet peeve about video games, though not particularly in solitaire, and interestingly a later entry in the series doesn't have it (nor does it need it). the challenge lies in that there are 5 hands for every level and you have to collect 10 rubies to succeed and move on, perfects don't matter much. it gets even trickier when frozen cards are on the screen, as you need to sacrifice a ruby to defrost all of them. unfortunately (or fortunately), when you replay a hand, you can get further rubies, unlike in sacred grove solitaire, where once you exhausted the crystals, replays would only get you more money, though there you kept getting levels until a goal was reached, while here, as I said, you have 5 hands and that's it. if you're looking for a casual card game, feel free to buy some cheap wildcards and replay levels until you get enough rubies before moving on, though the other extreme is getting all 10 early on, then just flicking through the other hands to get them over with (because you still have to finish all 5 hands no matter what), but to each their own. if you do want a challenge, don't abuse the system, but wildcards and power-ups can still come in handy. while the former was plentiful and free in sacred grove you have to buy them here, and power-ups are unlocked with gold as well and they're all the same as in sacred grove, which I found weird, and they're just as useless for the most part. I wouldn't even worry about buying them at all because as you go through the game, you'll get companions that do the same things for free (they need some time to recharge and they don't reset for each hand, so be careful), and once you have a helper on your team, you can't use them and the power-up with the same effect, they must use the same power-up slot or something. not sure why the store page says 50 levels when there are 20 with 5 hands each, maybe they meant 50 different layouts. there's quite a bit of story for a solitaire, or more like dialog after and between most levels, there's even a journal to keep up with goings-on, but you're not missing crucial info by not playing the first far kingdoms game, you can put most of the pieces together, though I found some weird things story-wise (feel free to skip the next paragraph, I just found it amusing). in sacred grove, which is the 5th game and 3rd solitaire in the series, they said only elves know the ancient art of solitaire, here's a magic deck, princess, do your thing. and here in solitaire #1, game #2 of the far kingdoms, playing as the same princess I get a deck from a fortune teller from game #1 (based on the dialog anyway). the assistant elf is the same in both games, and while I think they live long lives, a human princess doesn't, so too much time couldn't have passed between games. it's probably just me thinking too much into it, though I gotta admit, the concept of an ongoing story, as inconsistent as it seems to be in this case, playing out over several games in various genres is a good one, but not so much when the other genres are not my favorite. and while sacred grove had skippable jigsaw puzzles to break up monotony, this has unskippable hidden object screens, though there's a hint button. stripping it down to its core, it's the same as every other solitaire game, only not as good, but I'm glad they improved on a few things as the series went on. so pick it up on sale if you're in a frosty mood, especially on a hot summer night.
Full review at: https://thegamehoard.com/2019/12/24/the-far-kingdoms-winter-solitaire-pc/ While its basic elements are as sound as any other game of structured solitaire, The Far Kingdoms: Winter Solitaire messes up almost every gimmick it introduces to play. The rubies you need to win are easily farmed, the ice gimmick makes you pick between a frustrating round or spending a resource, the gold accumulation speed limits power up experimentation, and the hidden object screens are so easy they might as well not be there. Sure, you have the genre gameplay in tact and the icy backdrops look nice while you play, but the additions to the formula either undermine the gameplay or add some annoyance to what could have otherwise been a typical but tolerable experience.
2019 release and only in small screen? (My res. is 1920 x 1080) Besides being small, it's kind of cartoonish, rather than artistic, like I expected. More like an online solitaire game, than Steam quality.
