About
Mango is a surrealist first-person adventure/puzzle game about art and derealization, featuring
* trippy, psychedelic visuals
* intense psychological and philosophical undertones
* fragmented, lore-rich storytelling
* experimental horror elements
* and last but not least, an overarching feeling of NEVER knowing what to expect.
It explores the idea of a mind losing its grasp with reality, as reality turns into a dream, and that dream turns into a nightmare. It has an off-kilter tone that can shift from overly chill to downright scary. Often it resembles an acid trip, or an interactive fever dream.
The game contains ~8 hours of gameplay with lots of freaky action, even more freaky fashion, deconstructed urban landscapes and/or dreamscapes, existential angst, questionable parenting, a bit of driving, and a fair load of straight-up madness.
It has been described as simultaneously dadaist and hyper-realist in nature, both alien and also deeply human, as well as the story of a life, filtered through the eyes of the mind.
Also, it has been described as WEIRD as hell ;)

Mango is a super surreal walking simulator adventure game where you experience all sorts of completely insane environments and solve minor puzzles to advance the levels and find out more of the story. The story is told primarily through texts as you read discovered diary notes and click on items to receive thought texts. The game took exactly 6 hours to finish 100%, 5 hours for the main story and 1 extra hour to clear up the achievements during a post game level select. + The environments are completely insane in this game. Heavy on the psychedelic visuals. There is nothing else quite like this in the whole Steam store. It just doesn't let up. Other games try but this game dials the craziness up to 11 and keeps it there for the full 5 hours. Pure acid trip. Try to play on Ultra Graphic settings, it makes a difference seeing everything sharp and crisp. + The music in this game is also fun and highly original, from techno to electronic smooth jazz, all awesome. + The level select after beating the game is a very welcome addition to mop up achievements or to replay your favourite mind melting sections. + There is actually a meaningful and well thought out story here to unpack. The game does not venture off into obscurity like most of these surreal games do. What makes this game extra special is the story that backends all the visuals you witness as you play though. All the levels actually mean something that is going through your character's mind. + Lots of humour and funny texts to discover + The game is longer than average for this genre and you get your money's worth - A few of the puzzles, I would say about 2-3 of them, are super annoying and not fun to complete. Fortunately these ultra crazy puzzles only take up 5-10 minutes of time in the game's 5 hour playthrough. - The game plays out like an absolute brutal assault on the senses, and this onslaught can overstay its welcome around the 4 hour mark, you almost want to get off the ride at times. - If you are prone to get dizzy or do not like to get disorientated, you will not like this game. Buy this immediately if you want to go on an insane trip, and a meaningful one at that. Overall: 9/10
Follow "First Person Exploration and Puzzle Games" for more games like this!
A first-person walking simulator with heavy surrealist themes, but not much else going for it. As you can see from the screenshots, this game has some weird visuals. It's honestly really cool looking at the weird drug-trip scenarios the developer came up with. However, once that novelty wears off, there's not a whole lot else. The puzzles are basic and uninteresting; there's no story; and nothing challenging or interesting to do besides look at the environments. So, if you enjoy trippy, unique experiences, this is a good one to get on sale. But if you're looking for something more substantive, look elsewhere.
Wow. This game was genuinely an experience. I do want to preface this review by saying 95% I played this game I was definitely under the influence of mary's sweet jane. I also accidentally fell asleep at one point (not the game's fault, I was tired and sometimes pass out at my PC lol) for about 3hrs, so I'd say this game all-in-all took me about 8hrs roughly to finish. This game is something I REALLY wish I could experience over and over again for the first time. No game has ever been able to successfully make me sad, make me cry a little, make me fearful of moving forward, genuinely jump-scare me a LOT, but also allowed me to find such joy in the little things. This game will give you emotional whiplash. You will laugh, you will feel uneasy, you may feel very sad for the main character. The story is a bit hard to follow at first, but once you start to piece together the madness of it all - it's truly a treat. It's honestly a trip - definitely one I would be cautious of if I were to take shrooms while playing it. A lot of moments can be quite triggering, loud, or uncomfortable to read - but given the story it really fits perfectly. Pros - • Great story telling once you start to figure out what's going on (it's very confusing at the start - 90% of my gameplay was me going "what" or "oh, okay then!" because of the random events lol) • Incredible tension build up • Fun humor • I really enjoy the art styles used personally! • Incredibly boppin' music • Level selection for those who like to achievement hunt after the game is done - I love the layout! You REALLY see how many levels this game has to offer - which is more than some major titles I've seen going for $60. • An unforgettable experience that I wish I could redo over and over again • Jump-scares don't feel very cheap or un-fun to experience Cons - • Some puzzles may be harder than others and might take a sec to understand, but I never once needed a guide to tell me how to progress forward - I was always able to figure it out. • That one
needle game..
IYKYK (took me at least 5min to get past it) • Some platforming can be very tedious -
one involving floating hearts that spawn from the ground that you stand on to get to a higher platform actually caused me to fall off the map and endlessly fall - had to restart the level sadly lol
I would genuinely recommend this game to ANYONE who is into long walking puzzle games, exploring games deeply to find a lot of hidden moments, games that handle mental health topics, games that can spit out numerous genres of games like humor/horror/sad topics into one big masterpiece, and is looking for a unique, trippy experience of game. I paid for this game on sale and that was my biggest mistake. I wish I could refund my game and pay full price. For $10 IT IS worth it 100%. Incredible job done and you have won me over as a big fan of your games (I do not usually follow a lot of game companies in general) - I will be trying their other games out soon! This has become one of my favorite games that I hope to see some of my favorite creators experience soon!
You saw the screenshots. You bought it anyway. You deal with it.
A whacked out, tripped out good time and it was way longer and beefier than I expected.
Mango is many things, and all those many things that it is are all generated by and from you. This game is the perfect breeding ground for ideas. As you progress in the game and try to make sense of things, you will also progress your own thoughts and views. Really recommend this little game. The soundtrack is absolute bop as well.
At its heart, Mango is a walking sim with some point & click puzzles and arcade action. The experience of playing this game, however, is not so easily described. You play as a classic unreliable narrator, an artist recovering from some undisclosed personal trauma. You see the world around you represented by different art forms: surrealism, absurdism, avante-garde, psychedelia, etc. This world plays by its own rules and logic, and a large part of the immersive experience is learning how to navigate this environment. Visually, this game is a wonder to behold. The music and ambient noise is crafted to elicit nostalia and dread in equal measure. Mango has landed near the top of my list of favourite games. Highly recommended for fans of high strangeness. "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like." - Christine Porter "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." - Hunter S. Thompson
AWFUL DREADFUL ♥♥♥♥ POST
I went into this thinking it would be something I would enjoy, but it's a little too puzzle-ly for me. It's not a "bad" game, just not my thing. I recommend it for those that enjoy surreal games with puzzles.
Playing Mango was SUCH a unique experience, I'm not sure many other games could come close to it. I read/watched everything, explored as much as I was able to, and 100%ed it, but I honestly still feel kinda confused on what the game was actually about, lol. Despite that, it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the weird, surreal, and often creepy visuals. The puzzles weren't usually too bad and I think there was just one time I had to beg the dev (they're very active on Steam and extremely helpful, btw) to help me figure out what to do in the community discussions, haha. Overall, I found that the solutions to puzzles were pretty simple and I was overthinking how to get through certain parts, but I don't think I personally would have enjoyed the game if it were super difficult and involved critical thinking. The most frustrating thing to me about Mango was maneuvering the character to get past some areas of the game, like having to balance on objects, or avoid getting touched by other moving objects whether that was based on timing or whatever. I'd really like to play again sometime and see if I interpret anything differently, but I know it'll never be the same as the first playthrough. Also, after all the toilet and trash mangos in the game, I'm not sure how I feel about irl mangos anymore, but I'd happily trade them for the Mango game experience, lol.
