The Chosen RPG isn’t a great game, but it’s not bad either—it sort of floats in that weird middle space. I didn’t care much for the enemy graphics, which look like stock art slapped into place, but the gameplay itself was actually okay. Classic turn-based combat, simple mechanics, and enough progression to keep you going for a couple hours. There’s a lot of reading—and unfortunately, no narration to help carry the story. That might turn some people off, especially since the plot is standard "chosen one saves the world" fare. Characters are pretty one-dimensional too, but the game doesn’t really pretend to be more than what it is. What it is, though, is a short little RPG Maker adventure that doesn’t overstay its welcome. For the price, you get a few hours of decent, nostalgic gameplay. Don’t expect polish or depth, but if you’re in the mood for something light and retro, it’s a passable distraction. I originally bought it to support an RPG-Maker game creator. The whole thing is really nothing new in the RPG-Maker genre. I disliked a few things so much that these things tip the scale to a negative review. One of them being that there is no option to change the volume of the background music. Sure, you can mute it on the title screen, but you can't change the volume. The hero seems to be a stuttering, shy momma-boy in one scene and a glowing, courageous hero in the next. Which is kind of irritating. And the characters felt flat to me. The dialogues are one of the things I also found rather dull and awkward, and they don't always make sense. The only things that really stood out to me were the quiz at the end, and I really struggled with that, as I just skipped the wall of intro text after trying to keep up with it and most of the dialogue. The second thing that was nice, were the battle animations. The weapon swinging and special attack animations were good. The creator made the game free sometime ago, so you don't lose anything by playing it. Maybe it's your style, and you have more fun with it than I did.
