For $20 I gotta say no to this one. The puzzles were very simple and this game focuses almost entirely on presentation over substance. One big annoyance was how the game just throws hints at you as you work through the puzzles, basically giving away the answer 10 seconds in. As if the puzzles arent easy enough, you got a little voice in your ear spoiling it for you. Then by the 4 hour mark you're essentially done with the game & the end 'final boss fight' is literally a simple board game (based on luck) where the computer cheats. By then you get permanently locked out of the main house so you cannot collect missing collectables. Funny enough I was thinking of giving this a soft-yes until the annoying part at the end.
for 90% of the game i enjoyed as they were puzzles. the final challenge was a RNG hellscape that Ruins the entire game. the Original was fun and the story is good. i just wish the developers didn't put in one of the crappiest mini games to beat the game. as a side puzzle sure. but to be blocked by RNG ruins the entire game for me. i am glad i got the game for free but even free i want my time back as i have spent to much time in RNG hell and now cant finish.

75 / 100
Never got into the original back-in-the-day, innovative at the time, sure, but I always found movement clunky & gameplay dull. Fast-forward to the remake & gone is the limited movement & dark, creepy atmosphere - offering now free movement in a brighter, highly detailed, character filled mansion. Still, the eerie portraits littering the mansion walls are unsettling when you shine your lamp at them & Stauf's narration is often gloriously egotistically unhinged. Mystery Rooms generally offer 3 unique puzzles, some creative designs, but most weren't overly challenging (granted a couple stumped me for a bit!). Final puzzle was the biggest let-down though; worst design of the lot! The highlight for me was the ghostly 3D renderings of the characters & the great acting in each scene. Very enjoyable experience. ✔️ Fun, mainly moderate puzzles that won't have you pulling out your hair. ✔️ Ghostly 3D renderings of the characters look amazing, and can be viewed from any angle in real-time. ✔️ Character actors really nailed the scenes - always an entertaining watch. ✔️ Coin hunting was a fun side-quest. Some supremely well hidden! ❌ Sanitising the menacingly dark & creepy atmosphere of the original went a bit too far; takes away the horror vibes. ❌ Control of puzzle switches/buttons can be problematic if not positioned correctly. ❌ The final simplistic puzzle with Stauf was dull, frustrating & frankly annoying getting the timing right. A great remake of the classic adventure game, full of love and respect for the original. This remake enhances the original in many aspects, while staying true to its premise and basic gameplay loop. Yet, it does not make the original game redundant in any way. Both games are very much worth being played through. In the remake, the house layout has slightly changed (a few changes make more sense, but also make the navigation less "ghostly"), and the puzzles are different, for the most part. There are a few that are indentical or close enough, but a bit more... accessible this time around. I am having a great time exploring the house anew, discovering and revealing its secrets, coming across easter eggs, direct references and callbacks to the original game and its creators. The remake introduces among others, one particular new game mechanic to experience the setting, which it's quite well done and fun (makes for a few good laughs too). The tech used for 360 degree FMV actors is quite impressive too. I wish more games, especially classic FMV games being remade for modern platforms, would use this. There are things to improve of course, and I suppose having to deal with making the actors appear ghost-like and withstand close "inspection" by the freely moving player on a PC or VR make tweaking the implementation very challenging. But it's already miles better than having "hand-made" 3d models of actors which awful facial expressions, like I've seen on other FMV remakes. I love the original game (and the original sequel, though they could have done so much more with it then). The same story and characters are here, but with changes and additions enough to keep things interesting and exciting for an old-timer. The music is excellent. It's kind of a remake of the original soundtrack, more like new music entangled with the classic tracks, and it creates a hauntingly reminiscent mood in every room. I have played the non VR version of the remake. It is quite clear that the game was primarily designed to be experienced in VR, and the controls follow that design approach, but aside from a few glitches the game can be played fine on a PC. I do look forward to playing it again in VR in the future though (when I get myself such equipment). There have been a couple of ocassions where it's hard to click on an item, or manipulate a door properly, and some dark/black textures in drawers (gaming room). And on one ocassion I was stuck in-place after exiting a puzzle (the Queens board in the gaming room). But all in all it has been a fairly smooth experience -- and I am running the game in full settings on a quite dated PC hardware (about 10 years old). For the record, when I was stuck in-place I just exiting to main menu and then "continued" the game, so it placed me in a position that I could move around again. I am very impressed. HIghly highly recommended.
Just completed opening and dining room, and took a sneak peak at credits. They kept The Fat Man's iconic 7th Guest tracks and they sound fantastic. Also, actually enjoying the new take on puzzles. Struck huge childhood nostalgia chords. Will definitely find time to play all the way through soon and take the time to find out what's inside...
This game was fantastic. Great new modern take of full motion video combined with 3d. Fantastic puzzles with a good hint system. I highly recommend if you’re a fan of puzzle and escape room games.
Even though the puzzles pale in comparison to the OG 11th Hour, the game still offers a nice experience. The coin collectibles also add a layer of accessibility if one is unable to find a solution to the puzzles (coins allow you to completely bypass the puzzles) I'm was a little put off by the finale "puzzle" as it does require some strategy, but is heavily dependent on dice rolls. The rest of the puzzles were manageable and not overly difficult if you're heavily into the puzzle genre. The house looked amazing, the cheesey acting was fun to watch, and while the story wasn't exactly compelling it all came together to give a nice trip down memory lane. I was expecting more of the paranormal elements, but there is nothing inherently spooky about the game and it didn't detract from the game play.
Fine game ruined by a terrible end game. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to put a stupid board game style "boss fight" into a puzzle game, but they need to rethink the career choices. Having to rely on bouts of chance to finish a game ruins the entire experience. Don't buy unless you want to waste hours of your time in frustration.
Aside from the ending, this game was pretty good! Hated that it all came down to a game of chance! Change the ending please FOR THE LOVE OF GODDDDDDDDDD!!! CHANGE THE ENDING!!!!!!!!!!! that is all......
