Temple of Spikes
A fast and precise sidescrolling platformer of the purest form. No drawn out story to slow things down, no ham-fisted roguelite mechanics to pad the game with, and no obtuse puzzles to get in the way and add tedium; Temple of Spikes is the most distilled and hardcore platforming of its kind, worthy of being a successor of sorts to classics like Super Meat Boy or the more recent Slime-San while having a whole lot of creative variety of its own in the form of outlandish level designs throughout a gauntlet of spike-y deathtraps. Temple of Spikes is a lovingly crafted speed-runner's dream come true, and it deserves way more attention than its been getting.
Gameplay
Temple of Spikes keeps the gameplay very fresh, its unpredictable and you're kept on your toes. All sorts of fun and creative mini-events occur all around you and never without a break, and in all sorts of non-conventional platforming ways. Doors will close you into a dusty old tomb as blocks raise from the ground systematically revealing spikes to dodge, and staying quick enough to avoid being crushed between the rising blocks and the ceiling. Different types of blocks are slowly thrown into this avoid-'em-up mix making thing more interesting and challenging, with green slime blocks that will slow down your movement sending you into a panic as you frantically try to avoid being crushed between the shifting terrain. Eventually, these rooms show up more frequently and with blocks shifting at you in different, unpredictable directions as you work your way from the sides with pieces of the actual level flying at you. There's a classic little world map to select your next level from à la Super Mario World, and at first glance the amount of stages here to work your way through is massive. The different stages are littered with all sorts of secret passageways and hiding spots, and many hazards will be waiting for you to traverse when finding a hidden duct to sneak around and typically end up in a room full of treasure. Collectables, or treasures, come in the form of coins which can be used as a currency for saving at checkpoint, pieces of hourglass for the time-warping mechanic, and of course Scarabs which can be collected to unlock all the crazy new characters you can play as. Temple of Spikes dubs itself a hardcore platformer, and that's pretty apt. Like some kind of 16-bit Prince of Persia the player is equipped with an hourglass of magic sand to slow down time, and you'll definitely be needing it. Complex patterns of spiked blocks rotate and dance in sporadic succession requiring pixel-perfect maneuvering through each jump and fall to avoid being impaled. When time is slowed these predetermined movements of hazards can easily be navigated and on the many occasions that you get stuck by one and die, you can sacrifice a good portion of hourglass to rewind to a desired point in the recent past. Though this time manipulating system sounds like it would make a game too easy, in Temple of Spikes all it does it make the unrelenting and insane ballet of sharp spikes bearable to traverse as opposed to simply impossible.
Visuals/Sound
Tribal, primitive beats with lots of dubstep-y "wub wub"s and the archaeologic setting-appropriate cultural instruments like the esoteric plucking of far-eastern string instruments and other acoustics make for some infectious grooves. The funny gibberish speak the characters use in the small bits of dialogue you come across are pretty cool, mostly because you can hear their individual accents clearly even in the made up language, like the heavy british accent on the little start archaeologist dude or the demonic grunts from the Cthulu character. Simple but effective retro sprite-work makes for characters that are small, pixel-y and cute in a sort of 'chibi' way (Even cute 'lil Cthulu!). The backgrounds in Temple of Spikes are such intricate visions of an ancient and ruined temple, with hand-crafted tiles, broken columns and tribal statues that look genuinely antique. Colorful blocks make up the stages that your run across with all forms of spikes and traps laid atop them and weird runes and symbols painted on their surfaces. The glowing orbs that make up the body of bosses shine radiantly, exploding in a super satisfying chain of explosions as you set them off. If you're a fan of the 16-bit era of games you'll already know what kind of nostalgic retro visuals to expect, but Temple of Spikes has a certain spelunking charm of its own to it that stands out as being even more vibrant than the legendary La Mulana.
Final Thought
I haven't seen much fanfare for Temple of Spikes since its recent release, which is really strange because this is such a creative and competent speed-running platformer. The ancient temple sights and sounds, the pitch-perfect controls and precision platforming with the added exhilaration of slowing time down to leap past seemingly insurmountable challenges give classic speed-runners like Super Meat Boy or Spelunky a run for their money. With over 30 levels of pure temple spelunking mayhem and hours upon hours of challenging exploration and platforming adventure, this is a speed-runners paradise. The added offering of up to 4-player co-op just makes the fast-paced action even more hectic and addictive so be sure to bring a friend or two. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1328581224 Temple of Spikes é um jogo de plataforma que já havia sido lançado anteriormente como jogo mobile.
Cute and quite fun.
