Good game

I've been looking forward to this game for a long time, and I am happy to say it was worth the wait. It's one of the very few deck-building games which caught my attention over the years, as I'm not usually into that genre. Having played the demo, I had a pretty good idea of what to expect, but the full release still exceeded my expectations. Talespinner is an easy game to pick up and play, and rewards creative, thoughtful decision-making both in and outside of combat. The rules of the game are easy to understand and grasp, even for somebody not exactly too familiar with card games and their designs. Each character offers a unique take on the experience, requiring a different kind of considerations - my favourites for now being Himura and Kiri, with their side-swapping and teamwork mechanics. This is a delightful little game. Gorgeous hand-drawn art meets rich Japanese folklore, intriguing card interactions and easy to understand gameplay. If I had one complaint, it'd be about the tutorial popups - while they are undeniably helpful, some of the messages were a little bit confusing to me at first. Maybe it's my lack of experience with deck-building games showing? In the end, Talespinner lends itself just as well to learning by doing, which immediately clears everything up and provides that extra context that I previously missed interacting with the tutorial popups alone. If you're looking for an easy to pick up, but still robust deck-building game, which also happens to be beginner-friendly, I'd recommend it - Talespinner is a good time.
While I really like the theme and idea behind it the game itself is quite bad.. Balancing is allover the place and unlike most roguelike you don't really grow, gain benefits or unlock anything that carries over - your deck is completely the same, the run depends 100% on rng and after entering stage 3-4's of every run monsters and bosses escalate and outscale you entirely. Many mechanics are poorly or not at all explained and your character is pretty much stuck dealing the same amount of damage from start to end. They implemented a level up mechanic but it only goes to level 4 and instead of increasing the characters stats you just unlock potential cards you can find in your runs - yepp, that's all.. And while you try to struggle your way through the levels enemies throw endless amounts of curses at you which in many cases can single handledly end a run because it bricks your hand fully. The leveling system and balancing need a major workover before this becomes playable. Also - the game seems to have a tendency for forgetting setting changes too :/
I am having a blast playing Talespinner. It’s a solid deck-building roguelike where you guide your chosen character through different runs and each of the three characters each feel distinct with their own mechanics (Rinka is my fav 🪷!). Building card synergies is satisfying, the narrative choices during each run adds choice variety (chapter options give a positive or negative effect). I love the addition of companions each with their own mechanics. It has enough of its own identity that it doesn’t just feel like another Slay the Spire clone. If you’re into the genre, this one’s worth checking out!
Deckbuilder with 3 distinct classes that each operate differently with several different build paths. Won't take Slay the Spire out of my rotation, but it is nice to have something to slot in. Gorgeous animation, interesting creatures and boss fights. Worth your time and your cash.
i like the twist in the sts formula, but the ux/animation is very clunky compared to sts
