Intriguing setting, indeed *_*

This review is for the base game. I may review the Sanctuary of Sarras DLC separately later. Overview Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a lovely open-world RPG reminiscent of classic Skyrim. Its world is full of lore, interesting characters and relatively large areas in which it is easy to lose yourself for hours. The world Although the NPCs do not have schedules as detailed as those in Skyrim, they still move around, work and provide enough ambient dialogue to make the world feel alive. The regions are diverse and, in most cases, a joy to explore. There are ruins, caves, villages and hidden locations almost everywhere, often with some story or piece of environmental lore waiting to be discovered. Exploration usually feels worthwhile rather than like a checklist of map markers. Sound Sound is one of the strongest parts of the game. The soundtrack and environmental effects contribute greatly to the atmosphere and immersion. Combat and character building If you have played Skyrim, you will have a reasonable idea of what to expect: first-person combat, with an optional third-person camera, and a flexible system for developing your character. The early game is considerably less forgiving. You begin weak and often have to choose your battles carefully. As you gain levels, abilities and better equipment, however, the increase in power feels satisfying. By the end of the game, enemies that once terrified you may become little more than prey. That progression from vulnerable survivor to powerful hero is a real power trip. The game also supports many different builds. I played primarily as a dual-spell battlemage, combining elemental magic, summons and other abilities, and the build remained enjoyable throughout the game. Story and choices Without going too deeply into spoilers, the story is an interesting journey through a dark high-fantasy version of Arthurian legend. The world reacts to many of your decisions, and your actions can affect settlements, factions, characters and the eventual state of Avalon. Not every decision has an obviously good or evil answer, and some of the most memorable choices involve deciding between immediate safety, personal freedom and long-term consequences. The lore is extensive, but it is generally presented naturally through conversations, exploration, books and environmental storytelling. Graphics The graphics may be one of the weaker aspects of the game from a purely technical perspective. Some animations, character models and visual effects lack the polish of larger modern releases. Personally, however, I enjoyed the overall art direction. The game often looks atmospheric and beautiful despite its technical limitations. Players with the newest hardware who expect every modern visual feature may find more to criticise, but the graphics never prevented me from enjoying the world. Biggest weakness The biggest weakness is the uneven level of polish. There are occasional bugs, strange quest triggers, unclear objectives and dialogue outcomes that are not always communicated well. Some quests can behave inconsistently, and certain ending slides may contradict the outcome you actually achieved. Animations and combat can also feel somewhat clumsy, especially during crowded encounters. The game has the familiar rough edges often associated with ambitious open-world RPGs made by smaller studios. None of these problems ruined my playthrough, but saving regularly is strongly recommended. Final thoughts Despite its flaws it is one of the my most enjoyed RPGs since Cyberpunk and BG3. It offers a large and atmospheric world, excellent music, satisfying character progression, extensive lore and choices that often feel meaningful. It captures much of what made older open-world RPGs special while building its own distinctive identity. If you enjoy Skyrim-style exploration, flexible character builds, Arthurian mythology and worlds filled with secrets, this game is easy to recommend.
Great game! Similar to Skyrim, but with more varied bosses.
