This game is the first non-Elder Scrolls game to properly scratch that Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim itch for me. I would even say that it does lots of things better than any TES game. It's made with love by devs who continuously shower us with free content. If you are even remotely interested in first person fantasy roleplaying games, give this a go. It's got the same silly humor at times, it's got great worldbuilding and an interesting story to tell, fun combat, imaginative landscapes that utilize verticality, interesting and unique looking weapons and armor, I could go on! :)
For only 40ish dollars, and your own self respect, yes! You too can pretend this game is better by using AI/ content generation in even supposedly innocent parts of the creative process! Why scrutinize? Why take your time with art? Why inject your pedantic opinions about the human experience into thoughtful and layered artistic expressions that may genuinely resonate with an actual fellow human; when you can just generate meaningless, **** in the wind within seconds, right? Why try to fight it? Why think? Cant you guys just shut up? They pay their artists! Golly gee they even give out bonuses! They even hire new ones from time to time! They are quite literally the only company that pays artists their just due! Name one other company that does that?!? Just let it happen! Its easier to accept change than to fight it! Lifes way, way too hard to fight for something like this! They are only using it to optimize the artistic pipeline in the beginning! That is definitely not a concerningly corporate bias being projected onto the humble side of the gaming industry! It is most certainty NOT the most disingenuous corporate vagueness of all time! Of course, let it be known! me-me big-big dum-dum and this is not the most pathetic display of corporate jargon there is. Me luuuuuuuvvvvvv content! Me would like to thank all the uncanny valley, generated famous people getting yp to absolutely HIGHLARIOUS AI shenanigans, the Loony Tunes generated bible for me religious inspo, and the demi god esque leadership at Awaken! They are here for us, dont you see? Every so often we even get a few new free ai weapon content packs slightly edited for us dillusional, dopamine deprived, content obsessed pigs to eat up! Yum! Keep up the good work, Awaken Realms! Bravo Vince, and Questline too!
I really tried to like the game, but as it stands, I can't recommend it. It could get fixed, and maybe you'll have a better experience with some mods, but I've invested enough time and I just feel tired. First of all, there's actually a pretty good story in there. The writing is good. Most of the voice acting is solid too. Delivery may feel a bit antiquated though. The combat also has solid foundations, though melee can feel kinda floaty a times, especially with multiple opponents on both sides. And then there's a long list of frustrations. They start with dungeons that are a bit too large for their own good. A few too many paths to explore and no map. Some are a real maze and you spend a lot of time running in circles to make sure you covered everything. Then there's the weight limits that force you to either be very selective with what you loot, or keep running back to the shops all the time. I honestly never understood how putting weight limits on what you can carry ever contributed to the game unless it's part of a core gameplay loop (Death Stranding). You later get an option to move stuff into storage from your resting spots, for a price, but that's just fixing a problem you created yourself with extra steps. I picked up a 5 pound quest object early, and now I'm stuck with a permanent penalty too. A similar complaint goes to how fast the day/night cycle is. Night is not safe and you might want to seek shelter. In addition to not being able to see much. Given the size of the map is actually kinds small, I think both of these mechanics are there just to slow down your ability to explore. You gather profficiency by using abilities, same as Skyblivion. But then you also have a completely independent skill tree that lets you spend points in a completely unrelated manner. A few too many trees with a lot of stuff going towards pretty niche edge-cases. Equipoment you might like is often locked behind seemingly random attribute requirements. And then there's conversation options locked behind attribute values that seem far too high for the entire first area of the game. When you happen to meet the minimum requirement, it's not always clear it made a difference, or even worked. The difficulty scaling feels bad. Some stuff is too easy, but then you keep running into stuff that wipes the floor with you. The experience you gain in scaled to your level, so you're not really levelling up much in the first zone. But in the second one even the simplest mobs suddenly become a huge threat and take a frustratingly long time to kill. You should probably make manual saves fairly often, as it's suprisingly easy to lock yourself into a pretty bad situation. I managed to soft-lock myself into a corner by choosing the wrong conversation option, and then it took some time to find a discussion thread in which someone worked out a way to progress them main quest. I'm still locked out out of bunch of minor quests and achievements though. I've also managed to get into an areas from which I had no way to leave, other than by defeating enemies far above my level. Exploting bad pathing and shooting 400 arrows from an unreachable location worked, but wasn't exactly peak gameplay. The performance is also kinda bad for what you get. The game really pushed the PC, even on lowest settings. I expect mught higher fidelity game to run a lot better, but as a crutch, throwing in a few upscaling options on the table would have helped a lot. While the game is moddable and I know for a fact that some of my issues have solutions, I think the base game should already start in a much more polished state.
This is basically Skyrim 2. My new favorite game. After 14 years of playing Skyrim I have finally found a new game to play. 10/10. Deep lore, Choices Matter, Great Dialogue, Cutscenes, Story and lots of grinding if you choose. New Best Game Ever. This game was made for me. No gender Ideology Politics being forced upon me, I feel like I am actually escaping reality when playing. Great game for Loot Goblins and the game covers most play styles. Its like if Oblivion and Dark Souls had a baby. IM IN LOVE! I play on a Laptop and the game runs just fine. They are constantly adding free DLC's and Updates. If you liked Skyrim or Oblivion please give this game a try.
Imagine Avowed but: Clunky, ugly graphics from 2010 with ZERO animations (including cutscenes in 360p), horrible pacing, endless pointless dialogues, infinite backtracking, no parkour, shallow fighting system, bad story and SUPER flat characters. -10/10
Recommended
A very enjoyable open-world RPG with a definite *Skyrim*-like feel, and I mean that as a compliment.
Pros
* Fun open-world exploration split into acts * Interesting build variety * New Game+ adds replay value * Solid atmosphere and progression
Cons
* No maps for many large interior areas * Clearly a AA game, and it occasionally shows * Some quests drag on with too much backtracking ("talk to Bob, now talk to Joe...") * A few areas overstay their welcome * Mediocre graphics Overall, the positives easily outweigh the negatives. If you enjoy open-world RPGs with lots of exploration and character builds, this is well worth playing. Just set your expectations for a polished AA game rather than a AAA blockbuster.
