TITLE: Tails of Iron Genre: Souls-like sidescroller Graphics: 4/5 Character Design: 4/5 Premise: 4/5 Gameplay: 7/10 Lore: 4/5 Story: 8/10 Progression: 7/10 Music/Sound: 8/10 Difficulty: / 5 Gametime: 8hrs Bugs: None Overall: 46/60 Recommended: Yes (note: 100% completed) ---------------- Tails of Iron is a short and sweet experience. Do not let the lower relative score dissuade you from giving it a shot. The game is fun, keeps its pace throughout and suffers from minor issues. You follow Redgi, a Rat prince, in his story to rebuild his kingdom after the Frogs attacked and killed his father, the King. The progression in this story comes in the form of unlocking new weapons and armor. While they attempted to do a weight system like Dark Souls, you really just ended up using the lightest possible gear that gave the most stats throughout the game. The zones and areas themselves are more or less samey as there really aren't too many different places to go, but that's fine, as the game is relatively short. Playing it in small bursts ~1 hr long is preferred. There are plenty of save spots littered throughout to accomplish this. The boss fights in the game are fun and memorable, and the story is mostly told through a narrator (same VA as Geralt from Witcher 3 lol). There is end game content, which is mostly just boss fights, some of which are kind of difficult, but not really since you just have to not rush them in the end. There is also an included DLC that takes place at the end of the game which adds some extra fun and exploration. All in all, if you're a fan of the semi-difficult souls-like games, this is perfect. It's easy (relatively), short, and fun. And you get to be the Rat King.
This is a tough one to write. I forget the video that states it, but starting with the pros having JUST beat the game; it looks very pretty, and overall the bosses are...fun enough. Story is pretty solid too, and the finishers are visceral. But moving on to the biggest negative that makes me not recommend the game; The hitboxes. The YTber I saw reviewing the game mentioned uneven difficulty. I actually disagree, the difficulty WOULD be fair and easy if not for, as mentioned in that same video, the jank hitboxes. Gets to be really annoying right at the end. I want to say it is NOT insurmountable, and can still be enjoyable to a degree, but it IS very very exhausting to deal with and artificially inflates times on bosses where this is most prevalent.
While the game has a beautiful art style, nice music and an interesting story, its combat system is kind of bad (and boring): Combat issues: 1. Dimmed colors when at low HP make it hard to see the attack indicator color, which is crucial — it's easy to mix up the red/yellow indicators as a result. 2. It's hard to tell the area of splash damage, for example with the frog in the mill. Basically this post: https://entertainium.co/2021/12/16/tails-of-iron-review/ 3. Enemy hitboxes are strange. Sometimes you get hit half a second after their weapon has already hit the ground. 4. Armor doesn't really work. Even with medium set you will still die in 2-3 hits from bugs. 5. Dark Souls might be hard sometimes, but there's always a way to "shave" a boss's HP by using a weak point or the environment. In this game, you just roll and hit until you die or win. It's rather boring. General issues: 1. In the throne room, an enemy got stuck behind an invisible wall after I pushed it with my shield. I was forced to die on purpose just to reset the checkpoint. 2. You pick up arrows long before you get the bow, so they're useless until then. It's a shame, I was really looking forward to play it.
Very good game. Fun , challenging I really really appreciate how frequent the checkpoints / bonfires are , like it almost makes me cry. Just makes the overall adventure such a fun ride. There are hard sections but due to these checkpoints I never have to worry about losing much progress. There is always one ( so far ) around every corner. Thanks Devs. Also plays really well on Keyboard and Mouse ( even though the game says Controller is recommended ) , so BONUS points for that. Going from one end of the map to the other , looking there are any side quests by npcs , it can get a bit repetitive. But I do not mind it just because of how beautiful the artstyle is. So many places where I just stand to appreciate the back ground details.
Tats the best game of its kind, i love it so much, graphics are really cool, fighting, story - everything is perfect

Tails of Iron is a great, short, 2-D souls like with lots of charm and beautiful art. While the style looks a lot like Hollow Knight this plays more like Dark Souls 1 or Salt and Sanctuary. (Sword and board, not a lot of platforming.) However, this game does not have any stamina constraints which makes it a lot easier than the aforementioned. It’s short and concise, there are not many maps so you will spend a lot of time running back and forth in the same places a lot, but I didn’t mind because the game is such a joy to look at. The combat is dodge rolls, blocking, and parrying. All the enemies have a universal symbol animation to telegraph the type of attack they will do, so once you learn the tells and get the muscle memory to react properly the combat starts feeling really good. I did struggle at first learning the ‘red circle’ mechanic. These moves are aoe (area of effect) but that area varies depending on the size of the enemy. So, you need to learn those from trial and error and pay close attention to your positioning when fighting large enemies. If you are backed into a corner and they aoe you are going to get hit. This is an RPG but there is no experience or levels. Stats are entirely determined by your gear, and there is a ridiculous amount of it (possibly too much). By the end of the game I found I appreciated lighter gear as it makes you move and dodge faster which is helpful for avoiding those pesky aoe attacks. It took me about 10 hours to roll credits, and another couple hours doing endgame content (which is really fun, don’t skip it.) By this point I felt like an unstoppable rat warrior, and I beat most of the end game bosses in 1 or 2 attempts. I look forward to playing the sequel. This is a polished game with a lot of love put into it.
A game clearly and openly was developed by rat owners with a dedication to a number of pet rats prominently displayed, this game is a challenging, adorable story dripping with love and personality. Set in a dark medieval world, the adorable, hand-drawn style gives the intense story a sense of adorable levity. The combat is simple, mostly easy, but can ramp up the challenge for a good story beat. Rat lovers (however few we are), check this one out!
This 2D Souls-Like game has beautiful art, fine music, and great gameplay. The story isn't earth shattering good, but it gets the job done. Despite its cuteness, make no mistake that this game is incredibly difficult. There are times where the game makes it impossible to avoid attacks. There are also times where the game simply throws too much onto the screen at once and it's impossible to parry, dodge, attack without getting your butt handed to you. If you're into souls-like games, then you'll like this one. Souls-like games are simply not my cup of tea.
