First off, the story seemed interesting and I would like to at least give this another shot, however a lot of things with the gameplay leave much to be desired. The major issues I had with this game was the lack of information (stats, abilities, where to go, etc.). The combat is very simplistic, but there's nothing wrong with that. The exploration, is just abysmal. The game discourages exploration by blocking you from using exits and railroading you to where they want you to go. This isn't a problem due to the nature of metroidvania games, but other games will block exits or items by placing them out of reach until you get a specific ability, but here in this game they decided that even though you can reach these exits with the starting abilities, they'll block the exit by giving you a prompt saying that there is no reason to go through this exit (or something to that degree). So you pretty much get forced to give up exploring every available exit. Add in the fact that the game doesn't give you a direction to move in or a marker to move towards, and you'll find yourself constantly running into these dead end exits that you can't go through until you find the path they want you to go. As for map, I really dislike this map design. They use boxes to represent a map area with a percentage in the box to show completion of that area with no system for dropping pins on the map. So unless you have great memory, you probably won't remember what the area of each box looked like or what items you passed by. In the tutorial area, it prompts you that you can summon Mirah, but doesn't tell you what that actually does. For those interested in knowing, she attacks at the same time you do increasing your DPS but at the cost of mana per attack, so having her summoned will mean you run out of mana fast which also means you don't have that mana to launch ranged attacks unless you chug mana potions. With the leveling system, they give you 3 stat points to put into any category you want per level, but they don't really tell you how each stat point affects your overall stats until you commit the point and see the effect (all the information is on the same page but they don't show you that putting 1 point into the ____ stat gives you X HP / damage / etc.. Stuff like that). After beating the first boss, the dialogue indicated that you got a new ability, but not once did it ever say what it was (I'm already halfway to the next area i'm supposed to go and still don't know if there actually was an ability since nothing seems to have changed). There are doors you find around the map and can enter, sometime have equipment or orbs in them. The orbs tell you you need something but you can pick up the equipment you find in those doors. For some reason, the button prompt doesn't show up half the time indicating that you can enter the door, so I ended up skipping over several of these door unaware that you could enter them (I only found out that there was no button prompt when I had accidentally entered one while trying to dodge an attack, and I found equipment that gave me the dash ability but no instructions on how to use the dash ability. I had press every button on my controller to figure it out, which is just bad design). Another thing to note is that this will most likely be grindy. All of the breakables in an area contribute to the completion percent of that area and do no respawn, so it can already be seen that there are limited "free" items and coins. So to get more healing potions or status healing items, you'll need to grind out money to buy from the shop. I'm on my way to the second town after beating the first boss and going through the cutscenes after that (assuming there is a second town), but there has only been 1 merchant so far, and I'm constantly teleporting back to town to restock items. This isn't a problem considering that you can teleport for free at any save point to any save point, but do note that save points do not automatically heal you. You also have to pay for healing at save points should you choose to heal. Overall, I just didn't find myself enjoying this game.
I originally was asked to give feedback and cover this game on stream, and I was offered a key for it, the game was janky and didn't work properly but it was in early access, I gave my feedback in private to the developers, but it seems like not only the issues with combat, map movement and etc were not fixed, but they also clawed back my original key. The combat feels weird and unresponsive, sometimes after loading your character is glitched and you cannot attack at all, enemies sometimes don't respect invincibility frames, map is confusing and convoluted, in short the game mechanically is a mess. On the positive side, the game has decent graphics, has a different theme than most games and the majority of it is voice acted, that being said I cannot recommend the game by itself, especially due to how the company handles their business. I played this game for around 5-6 hours before release, but the time will now show here as 5 minutes is the minimum required time to leave a review, so I purchased the game, to let you all know to stay away from not only this game, but also the company, if they scammed me for free coverage, you can be next with an unfinished product that they might also clawback for no reason.
Now that's a hidden gem right there! Starting off with the low price, making this a bargain! and the massive variety of environments and monsters. My favorite part is the cut scenes! you can tell this indie game was created with love!
I enjoyed the game and highly recommend such a new theme in a classic style Metroidvania.
good game recomended for evry one (لعبة حلوة يا مطوعنا)
In "Sheba: A New Dawn," the developer pours his heart and soul into a nostalgic journey reminiscent of classic Metroidvanias. This game captures the essence of the old days while introducing a unique and original setting, theme, and story. This nostalgic gem has me hooked, and I'm determined to see it through to the end. Dive into "Sheba: A New Dawn" and experience the magic of classic gaming reinvented for the modern era.
if i asked you what your single most important aspect of game design was; would you say the disappearing / reappearing platforms from Mega Man? would it be endless traps and hazards? would it be constantly tedious platforming? would it be mid-game dodge/dash power-up with no i-frames attached to the mechanic? Sheba: A New Dawn needs to change its title/name. It should be called -> Trap: A Hazard Platformer. its the most mind numbing boring slog to get through zones / areas. its the most mind numbing boring slog to backtrack zones / areas. nothing is fun about the platforming in this game. nothing is fun about the traps in this game. nothing is fun about artifically elongating the gameplay with horrific puzzles and disappearing platform placement. everything about this game is a tedious chore and i regret giving this game a second chance and re-buying it. i should have left it refunded. dont be like me. keep this game refunded!
Fun and surprisingly casual, showcases a neat and unique arabian nights story for you to explore while proving with you a simple and straightforward combat system to explore and expand on.
