It’s a great game that’s paced competently and every clever idea is utilised to its maximum potential. The story has witty moments, albeit it does verge on the eye-roll-inducing marvel movie-tier dialogue of every character having to have some sort of back-chat which grates on me. I guess some would call that ‘millennial writing’ but I hate the semantics that phrase brings. Nevertheless, the plot is an enjoyable concept that compliments the gameplay and art style. Highly recommend for what it’s worth.
I expected a fun turn-based tactics game. What I didn't expect was how attached I'd become to the various characters in the story. Great writing!
Had this game on wishlist for ages, finally got it, it is incredible innovative on the game genre as a whole Amazing design in terms of levels, character and gameplay THE most unique game in the genre i have played in a long time
tactical PEAK wizards, game is incredibly fun, every act was better than the last. I loved all the characters, especially the villains, steve is the GOAT
It's a really fun game, every level feels like a puzzle, the devs give you the tools to throw it out of the window if you want and that's usually the intended method. My only complaint is that there isn't more story/stories to play through and my only regret is that I didn't buy it earlier.
Fun writing and a creative worldview is backed up by inventive gameplay mechanics and an incredible suite of tools to play with. Every new skill and character I obtained opened up new avenues to solve problems and every level feels like a new puzzle to tackle.
Tactical Breach Wizards is a game whose Steam rating is misleading because it benefits highly from the ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ binary. It’s a solid, competent game, whose trailers and description clearly showcase what the game is about, both mechanically (grid-based puzzle game) and tonally (quippy). So I would say it’s a rock solid 7/10, which can be tough to give a thumbs-down to. The problem, then, is that rock solid 7/10 leads to a 97% thumbs-up that gets interpreted as a 9.7/10. This game ain’t that. Even if you decide to buy this game, you should not go into it expecting something at that level. It doesn’t have the spectacle or the depth or the aesthetics or the ingenious design or anything else you would associate with a 9/10 or a 10/10 video game. Instead let me offer a simple decision path for whether you should purchase this game: Have you played Into the Breach? If not, go play that one first. If so, next question: Do you want to play more of Into the Breach? If not, do not play this game. If so, then consider playing this game, as the mechanics and aesthetic do offer some fresh aspects to this type of game. That’s it. I wish I had realized the similarity before I played this game past its refund window. Because I wasn’t a huge fan of Into the Breach for much the same reason I’m not a fan of Tactical Breach Wizards. I find the gameplay superficial and unengaging. The problem is that when you have a completely deterministic puzzle game, highly constrained to a handful of actions within a grid-based gaming board, with essentially unlimited and friction-less rewinds, then the gameplay has no stakes, no surprise, no shocking moments, no real sense of discovery and wonder. It just feels like work to me: I’m doing something I already know I’ve mastered and have no real chance of failure but the work’s still gotta get done. Pretty much the opposite of what I’m looking for in a game. You may be different.
Terrific tactical combat, interesting and meaningful upgrades, cool visual style, and a great sense of humor that had me legitimately laughing out loud. The enemy variety and mission objectives vary enough for increasing challenge without too much cognitive load. I'm impressed, this is an easy recommendation.
I wanted a little tactics game for a little bit of time and this game kinda blew me away. Not only was the strategy endlessly deep but the story and writing was amazing. Just finished it in under 20 hours on normal difficulty, trying some of the alternate objectives but not that many. Incredible game and is a must play imo 10/10
I understand the overwhelmingly positive reviews now. Story is great, it delivered waaay more than I was expecting. The characters are all interesting and well developed, the dialog is funny and moving at times. The sense of humor is spot on and complements the visual aesthetic of the game. The gameplay is fun and challenging enough. At first I though that that was single ideal way to complete each combat, but there're actually little challanges that you can chose to do for extra points. But you can win on your own way and even find better ways. (I think I even bugged the final boss because I was being a little too checky with the combos lol). The game was 20h long and still left me wanting more. I would instantly buy a Tactical Breach Wizards 2.
