Pure Cosmic Void Gold. If you like the more modern mini-adventure games, this is a great game for you. It is an extended version of the original 3 Tachyon Dreams games with additional scenes and puzzles. It has the more modern "smart but fair" puzzles that remove the frustration of the older "golden age" adventure games. This was my original gateway-game into modern adventure games. Highly recommended.
Even if you've played previous episodes of Tachyon Dreams, this anthology is the definitive version that includes extra content and feels like a complete cosmic saga! The good old text parser is put to excellent use here and encourages you to experiment to your heart's content :) Some of the puzzles are quite challenging and sometimes you need to type the exact command which can be frustrating but it's all part of the parser experience ;) Just like Blood Nova this game hints at some of the cosmic hijinx going on that makes the world feel more expansive, and there's definitely room for more Tachyon adventures but in any case check out all the other games that Cosmic Void has created, especially Blood Nova which for me is their masterpiece!
An Unlikely Dishwasher Saves All Reality!!
Tachyon Dreams Anthology is an awesome Sierra-style, text parser adventure game that feels right at home with any of the other "Quest" games from the 80s. The story does an excellent job hitting those humorous, sci-fi story beats (similar to Space Quest). The station's computer, Audrey, has charged the hapless and unprepared Dodger with an important time-hopping mission to save the whole universe. During his adventure, Dodger also finds another companion that helps explain the background of the alien races and she can also translate the alien language. The text descriptions for all the events are very funny and can get humorously elaborate. Story will also get more emotional in the later half of the game, with Dodger exploring his old apartment and solving problems from his past. The more serious moments were balanced with funny item descriptions and a happy conclusion. I found that several puzzles have a clever solution and, in the first third of the game, the player will experience some interesting time-hopping shenanigans during the roughly 5-6 hour journey. Some prior experience with Sierra text-parser adventure games is definitely helpful here. The puzzles overall had a nice difficultly balance, as long as you are paying attention to the items that you pick up. The text parser was clear and pretty flexible when typing actions for Dodger to take. The Menus were responsive (Save/Load) and had that classic Sierra feel. The pixel art is a colorful and vibrant EGA palette -- mixing the purples, pinks and light blues of the zany worlds featured early Space Quest adventures. One of the pixelated environments felt like the planet Labion from SQ2 and an area in the middle felt like Vohaul's asteroid base. Big fan of the art here. The Tachyon Dreams Anthology is Dodger's complete adventure (with achievements!), I had a fun time with this throwback adventure game. Highly Recommended!
This game is pretty good. The puzzles are a good difficulty. There were a couple of instances where the parser got in the way a bit, but I can forgive that because it's part of the "charm" of this type of game.
I don't know if Tachyon Dreams was made before the other Cosmic Void games available on Steam, but it feels like a step back. In particular, there isn't really a meaningful storyline, or any motivation to try get through the game at all. You get tossed into the middle of various Space Quest style situations, but the puzzles feel more like room escapes than part of a graphic adventure because after you finish each segment the game whisks you off somewhere completely different. These games are generally pretty nonsensical, but this one really takes the cake in throwing a bunch of non sequitur puzzles at you. Puzzles for the sake of puzzles can be a funny meta commentary when they're used sparingly, but when that's the whole game it's just tedious, especially when they aren't well-hinted. It's especially frustrating that synonyms don't work - for instance there is a "lake" that quietly does nothing if you use the terms "pool" or "pond". We don't have memory constraints these days, so surely could put the whole thesaurus in there? Meanwhile on the verb side you can "look at" something and get a different result to when you "search" the same thing, without any clear hint to actually use that other verb. I just didn't have fun with this game. It feels more like a random collection of obtuse puzzles than a coherent game.
Un bon petit jeu s'inspirant des premiers Space Quest. L'analyseur syntaxiques rend le jeu plus rude mais est un choix de gameplay compréhensible pour le résultat voulu.
It's no secret that I'm a fan of Sierra games, going all the way back to the original AGI games. And Tachyon Dreams is most definitely a love letter to that old school parser driven graphical adventure game. I'm also a sucker for time travel stories, which this game has in spades. My only gripe is the very short nature of Tachyon Dreams, but pretty much all of the Sierra AGI games were so it's not much of a complaint. That said, the story is a fun romp through time with an interesting premise. If you're a fan of the original two Space Quest games, then I definitely recommend picking up Tachyon Dreams and giving it a go.
Compared to most modern graphic adventures, "Tachyon Dreams Anthology" might shock newcomers to the genre with its blatantly old-school graphics and user interface. But this is a game that must be judged on what it’s trying to do, and that’s where it largely succeeds. It’s a nostalgic 80s-era Sierra clone, with blocky pixel art and a text parser for commands instead of simple point and click. Objects are sometimes crudely presented visually, and a better than basic knowledge of the English language is needed, but I hope people who aren’t turned off by its limitations will give this game a go. Sci-fi usually isn’t my cup of tea, but the simplified presentation made for an enjoyable trip down memory lane. And even for those who didn’t grow up with adventures in the 1980s, not only does this game shower you with great humor, it succeeds in making you think about your own life and the path you’ve walked in the process. I'm not sure how appealing Tachyon Dreams would be to a younger audience but for us old farts, it's pretty damn faithful to the old KQ/SQ days. Nostalgic yet fresh. Tons of screens to explore across a range of settings and text interface is smooth & friendly. Tachyon Dreams is a fantastic homage to Space Quest and its ilk. Puzzles are occasionally obtuse but solveable through experimentation. Love the palette & faithful retro art style. Well-written. Scratches that little Sierra itch if you want to have a throwback for a little while
