About
Crusades: Book I
March east into one of history’s most consequential medieval conflicts in Crusades: Book I, a detailed tactical wargame covering the battles and campaigns of the First and Second Crusades and the battles fought between them.
Beginning with Pope Urban II’s call to arms in 1095, Crusades: Book I follows the rise of the crusading movement from its explosive beginning through the capture of Jerusalem, the creation of the Latin states, and the growing pressure of increasingly organized resistance that culminated in the failed siege of Damascus in 1148.
Take command in Crusades: Book I, where 40-meter hexes and 10-minute turns place you in control of medieval armies fighting for cities, fortresses, roads, and passes. Every battle is shaped by the realities of the age: detailed siege warfare, difficult terrain, fragile supply, and the constant struggle to hold a frontier with limited manpower. Bring medieval sieges to life with Mangonels, Onagers, Ballistae, Trebuchets, Siege Towers, Battering Rams, and ladders.
Recreate the major campaigns of the 1st and 2nd Crusades and the battles between from either side of the conflict.
Lead the forces of the Crusader states and western armies, including:
Knights
Men-at-arms
Spearmen
Crossbowmen
Archers
Pilgrims and levy forces
Or take command of the Islamic alliances and regional powers, including:
Turkish cavalry
Infantry armed with spears and swords
Archers
Garrison troops
Regional field armies
The historically accurate Order of Battle includes the major forces that fought across the era, allowing you to experience the strengths and weaknesses of both sides — from heavily armed western knights and determined infantry to fast-moving eastern cavalry and defenders fighting for cities and fortresses.
The Crusades were not decided by open battle alone. Crusades: Book I captures the full nature of medieval warfare in the Levant and Anatolia, where strongholds, roads, and relief operations often mattered more than simple battlefield victory. Conduct detailed siege operations using Mangonels, Onagers, Ballistae, Trebuchets, Siege Towers, Battering Rams, and ladders to break fortified positions or defend them against assault.
Fight across a harsh and contested landscape where:
Cities and fortresses dominate operations
Roads, passes, bridges, and ridgelines shape every maneuver
Supplies and frontage can decide the fate of an advance
A delayed relief force can doom a city, while ample supply can save defenders
From the sieges of Nicaea, Antioch, Jerusalem, Tyre, Edessa, and Damascus to smaller clashes, marches, ambushes, and defensive stands, Crusades: Book I recreates the military realities of an era where every victory had to be held against inevitable counterattack.
Crusades: Book I includes 74 scenarios covering a wide range of actions and engagements, including:
A solo tutorial scenario
Five training scenarios
Historical battles
Variant scenarios
What-if scenarios
Specialized versions for both head-to-head play and play against the AI
The game covers major and lesser-known actions from across the 1st and 2nd Crusades and between, including battles such as:
Nicaea
Dorylaeum
Antioch
Ma'arat al-Numan
Jerusalem
Ascalon
Heraclea
Ramla
Acre
Harran
Tripoli
Tyre
Aleppo
Edessa
Ephesus
Damascus
Two dedicated campaigns containing 23 scenarios allow you to follow the major events of the era through a connected series of battles and strategic decisions.
Play through the First Crusade or the Second Crusade, from either the Crusader perspective or the Islamic alliance perspective. These branching campaigns allow player choices to shape the path forward, with strategic decisions influencing which scenarios follow and how the campaign unfolds.
A range of historically accurate maps are included covering the major locations fought over during the 1st and 2nd Crusades, as well as lesser-known battlefields.
The game also includes extensive 3D unit graphics representing the major armies of the era, bringing the crusading world to life on the battlefield.

Wargame Design Studios makes without a doubt the best wargames that are out there. The learning curve is up there, but the core system is simple enough that you can learn it and get going in a single evening, and once you've learned one game, you'll be able to play them all. The detail and scale of these games provides such a fascinating, realistic representation of combat across all eras that is simply unmatched. I heavily encourage anyone with an interest in the medieval period, and in realistic, tactical combat of the era, to purchase this game. I even more firmly encourage you to join the community on discord, the WDS forums, or elsewhere to find players to play in head to head matches. You will never find such quality gaming.
Great to see WDS games now on Steam! Highly recommended for hex and counter wargame fans.
Very big applause to WDS for adding their titles to Steam. This has been a long time coming. Crusades: at the moment I have had most of my experience in the Demo (time constraints on my end). What I was wanting to have was a sense of the combat model that the engine allows for- so in that regard take it that I basically added my leadership to a stack of knights (it's my retinue and I will do what I want with it - because to paraphrase Mel Brooks - it's good to be the lord (laird if you are more inclined to the Scot version) - and that's really what they would have done back in the day. Take that to mean, absolutely no one in any level of command would sit back and let the fighting be handled by their retinue and not have some skin in the game. Yes I realise that the engine does not really reward that risky type of play but I didn't really care, in the sense that - I was more interested in playing it how someone on the spot at the time would do things. Setting aside that- take it that there were lots of Frank charges, and once those happened some more ... it sent the Saracens flying, and in the demo at least, that side did not understand how to cope with that sort of thing, despite my usually being badly outnumbered. And that's actually pretty close to my overall understanding how things actually worked. In this engine, you are going to be really at the mercy of the victory points alloted units- so this tactic runs a big risk of backfiring (it sure does that in their title, The Renaissance, and pretty sure it would here as well -but I was not interested in playing accountant in these test runs -so I didn't). I've spent a lot of time in books in this period recently, so it was sort of a coincidence in being able to get this title when I did. I found a couple of references in the notes (for this and Crusades II) that I want to look into picking up, but for anyone studying the period, there are still further good titles out there that can give an even broader picture. As far as the combat model goes (this for open battle situations, not sieges - as those are going to be different again), at this point I have only limited myself to charges with knights. Everyone else I had being a bystander. More later.
Introduction: I was introduced to Wargame Design Studio games in May of 2023, and it's been the most rewarding three years I've spent invested into their games; the gameplay, the level of research, watching them improve the software, and releasing new & exciting titles since. Formally known as John Tiller Software until Mr. Tiller's passing 2021. The team who continues his legacy now have just done incredible work, and I know that John would be extremely proud of their accomplishments. As a military history enthusiast, these games are incredible to play, plus they always encourage me to with researching various campaigns, characters, unit types, warfare practicalities, etc. When I first tried their games in 2023, I started off with the free demos such as American Wars: Little Big Horn, Napoleonic Battles: The Final Struggle, and Panzer Campaigns: Mius '43. It took time, but the Napoleonic Battles demo, The Final Struggle, is where it clicked for me. Later I tried the Panzer Campaigns demo, Mius '43, and absolutely fell in love with that too. Since then, I've been completely invested in all their works. I may not be able to tackle all the WDS games in this life, however, I know that I can count on their games for providing well-researched, detailed, and entertaining wargames. Crusades: Book I I remember the day they announced the development of the new Sword & Siege series on their 2024 End of the Year blog post. The community was quite excited, and many of us speculated what time periods/wars they would cover for that series going forward. For now we have Crusades: Book I & Book II, along with the recent release of the Age of Longbow: Book I. I did not get myself a copy of the Crusades Book I & II until a few weeks ago, once it released on Steam. The sieges are fun and challenging- providing insights on how much a slug-fest it can be at time. The open battle scenarios can be anywhere from brief skirmish to a major engagement. The best part about Sword & Siege are the variety of units, commanders, and results of brutal engagements. Playing as the Seljuks is awesome with their horseback archer units, or commanding cavalry battalions of Norman knights. There are plenty of instances where I felt confident about certain moves and attacks that I've committed, only to suffer major loses; in terms of both manpower and time. Please note that the sieges in the games are a single day event, as oppose to history where sieges can last anywhere from weeks, months or years in some cases. With these type of games, the player should take the opportunity to read through the "Design Notes" which can be accessed through the file location, or in game by clicking on "Help" in the top-lefthand corner of the screen. One of the greatest gems from WDS games are the amount of material you can learn from both the historical details and the game technicalities. Overall, if you love hex-based games, military history, and strategic simulators then this is the game for you. Please check out the WDS website for additional titles/series that suite your interest. If you're wondering where to start, then try the Sword & Siege demo first on Steam, or if you want to try the other series like Modern Campaigns, Squad Battles, etc. then check out their website and download the demos. Pick a game that covers a topic that interests you the most. These developers have more games in the pipeline. They are really good about being quiet about any project until they feel confident about a game's readiness and closing release date. Generally, they announce a new project around 6 months or so before it's release. Thank you to the WDS team for all the hard work you've done! Happy to see your content on Steam, and looking forward to more!
Complex, but a love letter to the crusades, if you want a non total war war game about these time per this is a fantastic game covering every major engangment you could want.
Love this game and the Devs. If anybody wants to play some multiplayer pvp or pvE, send me a message on steam. I also have A lot more of WDS titles.
I had this game from release at the WDS store, so don't let the little play time on Steam fool you. It is a great wargame and a piece of historical art. Granted, the graphics and UI can seem a bit outdated but they work smoothly and give you full control over your forces. The game itself is a marvel, a playable history book with the accurate order-of-battles being unique. For everybody who wants to re-live history in authentic game this is the way to go!
Ignore my playtime, I purchased this and many other games from the developer from their site. They are made with significant attention to historical detail. The game play gets you reading about the historical events. Great developer and happy to support.
Finally, Wargame Design Studio is on Steam! I’ve been playing their games for some time, and they have some of the best wargames on PC. This game is perfect for people who like hex-and-counter strategy. I’m happy to see them on this platform and I hope they bring more of their games to Steam! 10/10
