Unfortunately, I have to agree with many others here - if this game were about 50% of its length, and didn't require QR codes to play what should have been short, in-game gag "apps," I would have loved it. Unfortunately, as-is it's just a grind. The writing is pitifully juvenile, in a way that smacks more of genuinely bad writing than of satire, the roguelike side-game is just an inferior ripoff of Rouge Legacy (Nearly one-for-one with an in-universe parody, which is a strange choice), and the main game is just so much of a grind that it isn't fun. I suppose I could recommend this if it were on sale for a few dollars, b/c the first hour or so is genuinely pretty fun. Or I could recommend it especially as a clear example of what NOT to do when designing a video game. I hope the devs take the core of a very good idea and go on to make better examples of the genre, b/c I would love to play the version of this game that has meaningful backtracking, map utilities, and doesn't have external web elements that will likely become either dead or worse, virus sites once they stop supporting the domains.
If ACHIEVEMENTS are a thing for you, pass this game because its glitched and impossible to 100%, no intention of fix. Despite that, it's a pretty pixel game, great ost, good gameplay. Also, you need a smartphone to read a QR Code to play a online mini-game to progress in the game, maybe you like this, maybe you hate it.
A pretty groovy little Metroidvania about a cute lama-riding raccoon out to stop an evil video game conglomerate from poisoning the world with cynical, disposable, trash games. A gorgeous SNES art style, a Guacamelee-like combo/juggle battle system, varied enemies, nice music, meh bosses, okay level design. Also features an unlockable Rogue-lite bonus mode very reminiscent of Rogue Legacy. Almost a full game experience in itself (if a bit overly grindy). I think all Metroidvanias could benefit from a remix/Rogue mode.
Sinopsis

I picked this game up in 2021 on the Switch and played through it to 98%ish, liking it enough to go so far as to buy a physical copy. Recently I was trying to remember the name to recommend to a friend and found it on-sale on Steam and figured I'd try it out on the Steam Deck. Honestly the game is just as good as I remember, though I feel like it the early game is much easier, which makes me wonder if they've tweaked the difficulty curve a bit. The game is a solid metroidvania with a satisfying core gameplay loop. Initially I was annoyed at having to keep up with three different weapons, but the differing loadouts and combos you can get with stringing together high, low, and mid slices is pretty fun, even if I usually just resort to juggling enemies with the high cut. The QR-code linked parody minigames are a fun 4th wall break, but I wonder what the longevity of those looks like as they rely on external servers to work. All in, this is game has a good soundtrack, great humor, and solid gameplay and I'd love to see a sequel.
SuperEpic: The Entertainment War is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. It's a "Metroidvania" style platformer which means the game takes place on a number of interconnected screens. Progress through the game involves backtracking and unlocking abilities which in turn unlock new areas. It's been done before, many times, better than this. Having said that, and in fairness, this is a semi-professional production and features bespoke game assets including soundtrack and pixel "art". This gives it a bit more polish and playability than most 2D retro pixel shovelware infesting Steam... but then again, there's not a lot of prizes for being pretty tall for a midget. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The poor quality of this game is reflected in the general public reception. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 11 players. That's right, only 11. This is a remarkably low number for a semi-professionally developed and marketed product, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in the game is to be expected. Gamers just didn't take this low quality game seriously, and for good reason. The game contains some stock/store assets/libraries/packages, but the "developer" here hasn't credited the people who actually did the work for those parts of the game. In some cases this breaches the license agreement the developer signed for the use of those assets. Investigation of the game assets shows the game manifest includes FMOD for Unity, which requires that the developers include the FMOD logo and credit FMOD properly... and despite the lengthy game credits that I sat through to make sure, the developer has chosen to breach their licensing agreement to use FMOD. The game may be removed from Steam if FMOD takes any legal action against the developers for this license infringement. You may be putting your money at risk if you buy this game, for that reason. SuperEpic: The Entertainment War has the insulting, gamer gouging price of $18 USD (for pixelcrap!), for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games, let alone the sheer number of free games available on Steam. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer and/or their associates (as outlined above), this is impossible to recommend.
