Proof that games are extra good when they are extra woke. Bought this because with a title like that, how could you not? Naturally, it delivers on everything the name promises. A very sweet, funny and emotional story with some wonderful characters in a well-realized and creatively crafted world. The gameplay itself is a nice, casual RPG experience that still requires proper strategy, which is ideal for me. The music also slaps, but so does basically everything about this game. I hope to see more great things from this team in the future.
I loved playing this game! It has a captivating and emotional story, simple game mechanics, and feels very balanced. There were two points where I had to "grind" for one or two level ups, but the game never felt unfair. It's a simple turn-based RPG that lets you build a team that can win with relative ease, but it also allows you to build more creative teams that make the game more challenging. I can't overstate how much I enjoyed the story, though! I played the game on Linux, and almost everything worked well. It had some trouble going full-screen, so I played in windowed mode, which made the game a tiny bit smaller but didn't stop me from having a lot of fun. I also love the amount of queer representation in it <3
Lesbian Animals? In my Super RPG? It's more likely than you think.
I have played a lot of video games in my life, many good, others bad. A lot have resonated with me in various ways, be they positive or negative emotions, but very seldom is there a game that takes me by complete surprise; a game I had no expectations of being anything more than something to pass the time. That was me with Super Lesbian Animal RPG, or SLARPG as it's lovingly referred to as by fans and its creator. When I was gifted this game by a friend, I thought for certain it would be 20 hours of "haha animal gay" jokes, which would have been fine, don't mistake me, I'm not one of those jerks who hates fun, I can appreciate a silly romp, but I WAS fully prepared for it. That's not what I got. Instead, I got perhaps one of the most genuine stories I've seen in a while about the struggles of relationships and dealing with one's anxieties. This game is the pinnacle example of the phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover", because I am still reeling from how good this game is. Right off rip, I need to point out the excellent writing which breathes life into each and every character in the game, and I do mean every character, because every single NPC in SLARPG is named and has a unique design and personality. My favorite NPCs are the fortune-telling lion, the hoodie mummy and the two kids that turn someone's house into a store to make money for stickers. Every single character in this game is a riot, and I found myself actually laughing out loud at some of the jokes here. I honestly cannot imagine how much work went into writing every single NPC and making them unique from one-another, but the effort is clear and is immensely appreciated. I also liked how doing various side quests in the game also slighly affected the main story, such as if you do all of the superbosses before entering the final area, one of the antagonists will make mention of it and berate you, or if you obtain the item that lets you fast-travel from anywhere, a character will use it to escape a situation they're in during the endgame. It's little things like these that breathe life into a world and make me feel like my efforts actually mean something. But the main characters themselves are the real stars of the show as far as writing goes. They are extremely deep and interesting individuals with memorable personalities, aspirations, anxieties and issues; my favorite character is Claire who, aside from being the actual funniest character in the game, had a story arc that really resonated with me and my own struggles. In fact, all of the characters resonated with me to varying degrees, and that's because SLARPG doesn't shy away from showing these people in very, very rough situations where they need to face their flaws. But instead of relying on (too many) tropes, the game's writing instead allows these characters to grow and work their issues out in very mature and heartfelt ways. It's such a breath of fresh air. The game also looks great, especially for an RPG Maker game. I could only really tell because of the engine's limitations, like grid-based movement and some menu noises, but that's it; everything's been painstakingly made with a beautiful blend of sprites for the overworld and hand-drawn portraits for battles. Locales are unique and memorable, the character design is top-notch (including enemy design) and everything just has a layer of polish to it, such as your party members changing clothes for certain areas or their palettes changing to reflect being in a cave or a weird dimension. The music is fantastic! Banger after banger after banger with some real toe-tappers that I won't soon forget about. Each track is perfect for the situations they play in, adding a wealth of personality not only to locales, but characters and cutscenes as well. The theme of Mumford perfectly encapsulates the story behind the town, but my all-time favorite track is the one for the superbosses which is, frankly, just a straight banger. The weakest part of the game is the gameplay, but honestly, even that's not too bad. As an RPG Maker game, you can expect the usual stuff: Turn-based combat, damage numbers, skills, yada yada, but the Star Power system does add a little extra strategy to every fight that ensures you're not just mashing the attack button or your strongest spells for every enemy. Dungeon design is serviceable; it never fully evolves beyond the midway point, even for the final dungeon, but it's fine. I also think the fast-travel system is a little clumsy, it does the God of War 2018 thing where you enter a door and go through a mystical area to get to where you're going, but some of the travel points themselves are a little out-of-the-way and can make revisiting places a bit obnoxious. I think my biggest gripe is the level cap, which is 30. If you do all of the side content and superbosses before the end like I did, you'll find yourself running from a lot of enemy encounters because you'll have nothing to gain from them. I don't see the point in limiting players like this, aside from trying to keep things relatively tough, but at that point just leave it in the players' hands as to how hard or how easy they want the game to be. And if I had one tiny nitpick, I hate that your party members' sprites aren't centered. I am aware it's to make it look like the character's aren't just walking directly behind each other to add a little extra depth to the visuals, but during rare moments where you're directly controlling some of your party members, stepping through doors triggers my OCD in unfathomable ways. But that's a me issue and frankly unimportant in the grand scheme of things. I'm at the point where I feel bad for having not bought this myself, but at the same time I'm thankful for my friend purchasing the game for me or else I likely never would. This entire game was a banger from start to finish, from the witty writing to the stellar visuals and music, Super Lesbian Animal RPG is amazing and I'd easily, EASILY recommend it to anyone looking for a good RPG Maker style game.
woouuh... girls...
woke and gay...
I'm genderfluid and JRPGs are my favorite game genre. My friends used to know me as the JRPG guy, I became the JRPG they/them, and playing this is helping be to be more confident as a JRPG woman. (genuinely amazing game so far, the characters are great and the soundtrack is banger.)
