Super Hero League of Hoboken

I played this game back in 1995 and have been looking for it again since! Nobody i have ever talked to has heard of this game and 25 years later im still quoting it and getting weird looks. Superhero League of Hoboken has a very funny story that adds famous sites around the New York area into the environment. This game is a turn-based combat rpg with point and click environments. You can customize attributes on your characters with different items you find throughout the game. Music can be a little annoying because of some sharp notes, but i would rank it somewhere between ok-ish to digging-it. Interface is CLUNKY AF, but not unbearable. You can navigate using your keyboard or mouse. BOTTOMLINE: If you are looking for a mostly unknown gem, and can be patient with the aged parts of the gameplay, you'll find a really solid and entertaining adventure that is filled with cheap laughs and topical puzzles. - 7/10

I am already bias towards this game because I grew up with this game. It was a rare find at the time it came out. I remember searching ebay for a long time to finally get my own copy. If you like games like monkey island, kyrandia, shanara, death's gate.... you'll love this game! Old school point and click with a dash of a turn base battle rpg element. The humor is definitely reminiscent of the past. I'm still addicted to the catchy 8 bit tunes. I can listen to the head quarter tune for hours. I love the puzzles too!! I remember being stuck for hours. This game requires you to think outside of the box as there is only one way to solve certain story quest. It may be just worth it to go through this game with a walkthrough if you find yourself not knowing what to do. If you like Simpsons or Dilbert type humor- you'll enjoy the humor of what this gem has to offer.

I wasn't able to play this game as a kid, but playing it now? I wish I had! In terms of hooks, Super Hero League of Hoboken is fairly unique in its premise. It's a mixture of turn-based RPG and point-and-click adventure, with a setting that's deeply driven by humor despite its post-apocalyptic state. You play as a down-on-their luck team of superheroes based in Hoboken, New Jersey that are determined to restore their superhero league to its former glory, But with super powers that range from "x-ray vision that only works on pizza boxes" to "being able to make an opponents cholesterol skyrocket", they have a long way to go. Highly situational crimes occur and shenanigans ensue! This game was originally released for MS-DOS in 1994. So chances are it'll run just fine on your machine (it comes with DOSBOX and everything). It looks pretty solid for the time period it came out, too. But being a port of an old game, it has just a bit of jank to be dealt with. Nothing game-breaking, thankfully. The color palette does occasionally wig out when loading certain screens like the combat interface. Thankfully it only ever lasts a few seconds. Tabbing in and out of the game can cause the resolution to shrink as if you were playing it in windowed mode, but that can be fixed by simply adding "-windowed" without quotations to your steam launch options and pressing alt+enter when the game is running (twice if you want to keep the resolution you were using). The UI is fairly easy to navigate, most things are clearly labled and there's a helpful mechanic where holding the right mouse button over pretty much anything gives a more detailed explanation or description. The gameplay is pretty easy to figure out. It's divided pretty neatly between exploration segments, where you move your party across a map and fight any randomly-encountered baddies in a turn-based fight, and point-and-click segments. In these you poke around towns or other settings, talk to your team or manage their equipment, and solve puzzles using items you've found along the way or your team's variety of oddly-specific superpowers. Some of the solutions can have sort of confusing thought processes behind them, but it's usually nothing wracking your brain won't help. If you're looking for a deep story and complex characters, though, this may not be the game for you. Hoboken keeps writing mostly confined into its episodic missions, which usually entail you and your team setting out to either solve one of the various problems of New Jersey or other silly shenanigans. The humor is really the big thing going for this game. Most of the jokes and bits have aged well, but some of the humor is just a little bit dated. Speaking as someone who was literally 1 year old when it first came out and is only now able to play it in her late 20s, though? Most of the jokes will stick anyway as long as you haven't literally lived under a rock. Even if lowbrow humor isn't your thing, there are probably some parts of this game that will get a giggle or two out of you. All in all? it's a charming little hidden gem, but also a product of its time. It's absolutely worth the paltry asking price of seven bucks. I mean hell, I typed up this review just so there's more than just two second opinions on the store page. This game really does deserve more love!

My mummy had bought me a video game disc that contained a main game and a bunch of other free games back in 2009 and I played this game so much that I sleep talked to Dr. Entropy so after losing the disc and having to do all dosbox settings in order to download and run this game on my slightly better computer few years later was a bit problematic, but to see this on Steam is still a pleasant surprise even though it has a price tag.

The most hidden of the gems, and a gem it surely is. Haven't seen another game quite like it, which is a shame.
