i Genuinely do not know why this game is so highly reviewed, its significantly worse than Subnautica 1 in pretty much every way but base building, and even that mechanic isnt nearly as useful considering that the map is entirely too small to need more than one base, which can be easily placed in the shallows. the leviathans are by and large boring, with the only one you really even need to deal with being the shadow leviathan because they hide it in completely disgusting amounts of fog in the crystal caves. the ice worm is supposed to be a scary encounter but was utterly trivialized because i just... hopped through its area in a prawn suit. i was also apparently one of only 20% of people to even bother finishing Sam and Robin's story, so thats a pretty good indicator of how much people cared about the character they were playing.
If you want to play this game and you absolutely enjoyed Subnautica, you would enjoy this one too. Expect the story to be relativeley short and keep exploring (You can also speed run it but will usually less than 3-4 hours which is no fun to me). Don't listen to reddit, subnautica community isn't toxic, it's just diverse but in support for the good cause, they rawdogged hard this game that even the sound of eating food seems a problem to majority of dislikers. Yes the map is small, and you all don't like Land exploration, from a marine biology pov this game is scienticifically accurate in it's oceanographic content as much as it can be (except the Precursor elements ofc). Only wrong thing is this should have been based as a dlc (same game engine) and not as a standalone game, which i understand that they wanted to graphically enhance this game more from first one. And trust me, graphically this game is more beautiful than first. Final things should be that in-game story, find about what happened to Sam, cure the ancient kharaa mutated cells and then focus on main story. Subnautica devs are anything but not a disappointment to the lore and gameplay. Respect for that. Hope the community also sorts out this no kill policy in subnautica 2 since it has no purpose neither here nor in og (except vitality which i am sure can also be done in other ways). Also please don't put penglings in bioreactor, don't do thiss... EDIT: Just discovered trivalve eggs after finishing the game, they are very much unique less cute but smarter than cuddlefish lol YOU CAN ALSO IGNORE the every month controversy about how the pda has an indian accent, the devs specifically said that when they were making the game, the indian accent simply symbolizes technology, ceoism and megacorporation. But the last thing we need is people whining about a survival guide's voice accent every once in a while. I wonder if Weyland-Yutani can fill their perfect accent hunger stomachs with good space exploration survival guides.
I went in blindly, didn't even look at reviews, and completed the game 100%, just because I wanted to form my own opinions... and it was an awful experience. Awful writing, bland and forgettable music, and unforgivably awful and boring world design. All spoilers are marked as hidden below.

The studio is located in California and carries extremely toxic politics into the writing.
Their writing is full of tedious, awful "millennial writing", meaning heavy sarcasm and stupid jokes which makes all the characters feel Californian, instead of feeling real/serious.
The writing is FULL of political preaching and trite snark, instead of any actual wit or clever insights.
The PDA (computer/databank device) in the game literally has an Indian accent. Why? None of the other characters in the game have that accent, so why does the computer have an Indian accent? It makes no sense and is just more forced, jarring political pandering.
When you build a Control Room for your base, you get this gem of Californian Millenial political writing: "PDA: In the control room, you can change base lighting and colors, rename your base, and see information about power and structural integrity. But not the integrity of societal power structures." That kind of toxic writing is rooted in hatred and a woeful inability to understand complex history (and everything they're supposedly rallying against still goes on TODAY in the countries they cherish, like the Middle East and Africa, where slavery, racism and misogyny is rampant in every country).
They also crammed in a
lesbian biracial relationship
just to really hammer home the "societal power structures" message that the game is about.
This shows that the writers didn't understand that this is a sci-fi game set in space in the future, and NOT their personal Tumblr blog.
Therefore we shouldn't be surprised that they hamfisted the main characters; the sisters (Sam & Robin) and
Marguerit
, as "three strong, black/mixed female heroes". Even though it was clear that
Marguerit died in the first game, and that it makes ZERO sense that Marguerit is now back and "somehow crawled into the Reaper Leviathan from Subnautica 1 and lived for weeks inside the rotting carcass while it floated to the north pole to bring her into the new game".
It's ridiculous, very heavy-handed and awfully forced.
I don't even really mind the BIPOC sisters or
the lesbian relationship
, and I don't mind that all the heroes are people of color, because unlike the creators of this game, I don't see everything through racist and sexist eyes. All I care about is believable writing, and I really drew the line at
Marguerit
. Their political self-insert became so heavy-handed that they made up a ridiculous, unrealistic story just to
resurrect Marguerit in the new game
, to get one more "female fist against the patriarchy" into the game. That's all it was. She was just another token character for the writer's heavy-handed messaging, and that kind of painfully weak writing poisons and weakens the entire game.
The story about the sister is absolutely ridiculous too.
Turns out your sister is an idiot who "girl bosses" to "fight the evil corporation she's working for" and blows everything up to stop the scientific research on the planet, thus getting everyone (including herself) killed. Then it turns out the "evil corporation" was actually working on cures for diseases and was actually working on something good for humanity, and your sister was just stupid and everything she did was all pointless and harmful. The game frames her as a noble hero anyway.
I can only assume that this major story flaw is a result of the game changing writers/story direction about 3 times during production.
But the awful writing was just the cherry on top of Below Zero's pile of junk for me, because the game design itself is already absolutely terrible compared to Subnautica 1 all on its own. Everywhere you go, there's just snow and ice and identical looking, repetitive water biomes. The glacial tundra biome (on land) is awful and is a huge maze of wasted time, with constant freezing and snowstorms and fog making navigation in the white ice extremely tedious. Most of the time you're just staring at heavy, white fog without being able to see anything. The story is told so poorly and the "glacial tundra" map is so massive and maze-like that you'd need incredible patience to actually find
Sam's secret stash
required for beating the game. By that point, I was so bored with the game's awfully designed, repetitive maps that I just looked up a video on how to find the key locations in the tundra.
Another huge issue with Below Zero is how hidden the entrances are for
Outpost Zero (hugging the glacier wall until you find it underwater northeast of the starting area)
and the
Al-an Architect Storage
cave. The reason why
Outpost Zero
is so hidden is just poor game design: It USED to be the SPAWN POINT for the game, but they changed it without adding any hints about how to get there, so you can run around blindly in the glacial tundra for hours if you don't look it up. Even though you get a map marker for it later in the game, there's no indication whatsoever that you need to get there via the water as opposed to the tundra you've been repeatedly visiting in that area before then. As for the
alien storage cave
entrance you're supposed to find at the start of the game, it's barely visible and is faaar away from the distress signal map marker, so after looking for 30 minutes at the start of the game, I just went on with other stuff, and I had played for 15 hours before I finally
met Al-An in the cave and discovered that he's
vital for the exploration of the game. So I went through most of the game blind (and annoyed), not knowing that you were supposed to go there first to make the rest of the game make sense. I looked it up and saw that lots of people had ended up in the same situation. Either way, most of Below Zero was just tedious "go down deep and look blindly in very specific spots whose nearly invisible entrances are hundreds of meters away from the destination waypoint".
Even having Al-an wouldn't have helped much since he just hints that something is nearby but usually doesn't mark it
. The game design in Below Zero is fundamentally awful.
The music of Below Zero is bland and boring too. Which, funnily enough, is a result of the company owner firing the original, genius Subnautica 1 music producer, because he disagreed with them about politics. For example, they were celebrating political assassinations. That's how intolerant they are. Therefore it's no surprise that Below Zero's writing is a heavily-political, awful mess.
With Subnautica 1, the world design was amazing, with logical biomes and a free exploration feeling where you would constantly run into progression milestones just by visiting the biomes. I felt a constant sense of awe and exploration with so many beautiful, varied biomes and so many interesting wrecks. Sure, the story in SN1 was pretty thin and the voice acting in its PDA entries was so bad that I always muted them and read the text instead. But at least that game had a large, gorgeous world to explore with so much interesting content. In comparison, Below Zero felt like a boring, repetitive chore where everything looked and felt identical, and you had to find tiny cave entrances to progress the preachy, political story. I wish I could refund Below Zero. But at least Subnautica 1 is a masterpiece that I have replayed many times.
Subnautica: 9/10. Below Zero: 3/10 (only because it's still "more Subnautica" for those who crave more, but yikes is it BAD!).

Different Doesn't Mean Bad
You've likely heard a lot of negative things about Below Zero just by scanning the reviews. I'm here to tell you that, while yes, it wasn't the EXACT same experience as Subnautica 1, it was a refreshing take on the game, and I did enjoy it. Different isn't always this awful thing we need to completely avoid trying. While I don't think it beat the original game, if you found Subnautica to be amazing, I wouldn't pass up the chance to play this game just because it couldn't live up to the incredibly high expectations the original game had set for it. While it does fall short on giving you the same terrifying, vulnerable feeling that the open waters of Subnautica 1 does, it shines in other ways. For instance, it expands upon base building and adds many quality of life features that the original game lacked. It emphasizes exploration and discovery over the feeling of being in constant danger. Despite often being considered a let down, Below Zero still has a beautiful soundtrack and entrancing biomes much like the first game. I hope you can put aside the high bar Subnautica 1 might have placed on Below Zero, because it has a lot to offer.
This is a hard game for me to review. If I could leave a sideways thumb instead of a thumbs up or thumbs down then that is what I would choose. If you played Subnautica and loved it, you will likely at best only like this title. If you played Subnautica and hated it, don't buy this game, it is worse by just about every metric. If you haven't played Subnautica at all, then play it first and choose one of the options above. Subnautica is a fantastic game that really stands out as being unique in the gaming world to this day despite its original early access release now being 12 years ago. If you decide to buy this game, wait for a sale. It is not worth the asking price in my opinion. With all this being said, I'm going to say what I liked about this game and follow it up with what I did not like about this game. The things I liked: I like the SeaTruck and the ability to customize the vehicle through this game's inclusion of modules. This, to me, was a very cool feature that is not in the original Subnautica and that I hope it makes it into Subnautica 2. My one complaint about the system being that I never found all of the fragments for all of the modules before I 100%'ed the game. I wish it had been a little more straightforward to find all of the pieces so I could make my dream SeaTruck. I liked the information we gained about the Architect race of aliens introduced in the original title. I will avoid going into detail here to avoid spoiling too much about the game's storyline and what we learn. Either way, loved getting to learn more about them and this particular part of the story of Below Zero. I liked the new base building additions and found it just as fun to build a base in this game as in the original Subnautica barring the lackluster environments present in Below Zero. What I didn't like: The above water sections. This game is not named Supernautica, it is Subnautica. It is not named SuperTerrica either. An amount of land exploration is acceptable and I enjoyed the above water sections in Subnautica because they were very interesting, small, and packed full of loot, fragments for fabricating new gear and base pieces, and story reveals. In Below Zero, everything on land looks the same, there are vast areas with virtually nothing in them, and I manage to explore the entire area and 100% the game without running into the new major enemy that is supposed to dominate the surface area of this game. Even with the new land exploration vehicle, it just wasn't exciting. The Snowfox, the new vehicle, wasn't particularly fun to pilot either. It suffered from one of the same thing that plagues every vehicle in this game and the player as well. It is too f*@($!% slow. Why are the vehicles so slow in this game? Because the map is a literal fraction of a fraction the size of the original Subnautica map. They made you slower to make the map feel bigger. It did not work. I was painfully aware of how small the map was my entire playthrough, and I was still slow as a slug. It was painful and not fun. It made the game less enjoyable. Please do not try this again Unknown Worlds. Please. I still do not understand how this game costs the same as the original Subnautica despite only adding a few things, presenting a new story line, while being an objectively smaller and worse game than the original Subnautica. It would be far easier to recommend this game and forgive some flaws if it was the cost of a DLC expansion and not a full title. I did not particularly enjoy the story of this game and the way it is told to the player is just actually awful. Despite having only visited half of the human base locations on the map, I had already gotten to the ending of the story line while missing nearly half of the story. This made uncovering the rest of the story rather boring as it became extremely predictable since I already knew how the story ended. You can just find all of the story information at any time and in any order in which you just happen to happen upon it. The original Subnautica did this as well, but the way they used crush depths meant you were almost certainly going to find the story in the correct order unless you were really going out of your way to miss the story line. It was just a better way of doing this kind of story telling. The ambiance of this game was another thing that was disappointing. Part of what and I and many other players really enjoyed about the original Subnautica was this feeling of being truly stranded on 4546B. You felt alone, you felt isolated. You felt like at any moment some new previously unknown monster that would rival the dinosaurs may burst out of the murky depths and drag you to a watery grave. That feeling is mostly gone from this game. Barring one particular creature that I ran into in my final hour of play time, even the biggest creature was pretty lackluster and few in number. I was no longer scared to travel places beyond the first hour of game play and this killed a lot of the tension and feeling that was very present in the original Subnautica. The addition of human characters on the planet made this worse as you were not even isolated at all any more. People outside of 4546B knew you were there and there were people to meet on 4546B as well. This part is extremely subjective, but it seems most players agree with me: the biomes in Below Zero are just not as good. The exploration is not as good as a result of this. The world just is not very excited to discover like it was in the original Subnautica. Below Zero just fails to capture the feeling the original Subnautica had. If you actually read this, thanks for reading. I have comments turned on, let me know if you agree or disagree. I can truly say I only enjoyed half or less of my play time in this game and mostly completed it to be fully caught up on the Subnautica world for the launch of Subnautica 2. I am very excited to see what they learned from this when Subnautica 2 reaches its full release date once its Early Access is over. Happy diving!

[/th]

Warum gibt's so wenig environmental storytelling?
